View Full Version : Any reason to replace upper timing chain guide?

Like title says, I recently had a slight "grinding" sound coming from under my valve cover. Removed the valve cover, and the upper timing chain guide was completely cut into 2 pieces, and just resting on top of my timing chain.
Luckily no damage was done, and my car has been running good for the last month or so.
I was just curious, my brother-in-law who was helping me out recommended that I get a new upper timing chain guide, that it prevents the timing chain from "skipping teeth." Is there any truth to what he's saying?
I see many people recommend to just toss it and don't worry, was just wondering if there was any possible benefit from having the upper timing chain guide in there. I know there's the possibility of the same thing happeneing, I'm just wondering if there is any actual benefit to the upper timing chain guide. Thanks.

Go to your Nissan dealer...they won't even sell you one

no.
take it out, throw it away, burn it with fire, poop on it, bury it, melt it.
do any of those things, but don't put it back into your motor.

Usually your brother in law would be right, but THIS TIME, listen to Nissan WORLD instead. It was a poor design/bad idea from nissan in the first place. Why do you think yours, and thousands more broke? BAD IDEA. If Nissan wont even sell you a replacement, then you KNOW its a HORRIBLE idea.

^hehe, I guess you guys are right.
Just to clarify, the only reason I would have confidence in putting one back in, is I figure my car is about 15 years old, so maybe a new uppper timing chain guide would last another 15 years, ya know?
But yeah, my brother-in-law is pretty smart with his cars, but he isn't a Nissan/240sx enthusiast like all you great people!
So, I will go with the Nissan enthusiasts, my people, and take all your advice and never think about the upper timing chain guide again!
Thanks guys.

Basically Nissan engineers didn't consider that the timing chain might need a little room up there, and that it wouldn't necessarily go slack and skip teeth.
After seeing so many of them get broken in S13s and 14s, they said 'let's put out word that that piece isn't needed, and shouldn't be relpaced'.
Take that shit OUT
Even Nissan will tell you that.
My stepdad is a master mechanic at a huge nissan dealership, and even he laughed and said the same thing that Mr. Meph is saying, when i asked

Hey you think your dad can find out if nissan put out a recall or something syaing to take the guides off? I think I have rattle but I dunno. Not doesn't sound like something against the valve cover, but something going on underneath.
I said I was gonna get em tkaing off but everyone thinks its a bad idea that I've talked to outside forums. I heard nissan put out something syaing to remove em, so if anyone knows where I can find the statement PLEASE let me know.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!
TAKE THEM OUT. Stop bullshiting around, stop asking, stop wondering, stop thinking, stop annoying me!
TAKE THE FUCKING UPPER TIMING GUIDE OUT! LISTEN TO EVERYONE on here. Actually fuck it. LIsten to all of your friends. Leave them in there. Let it break into 20 pieces, and disperce into your oil and all over your timing chain. Better yet. Let it break, let a piece get BETWEEN your timing gear and chain, THEN watch that bitch skip a tooth.
FUCK. Do a fucking search. Call a fucking dealor. Someone make this a fucking sticky... Shit i'm annoyed right now.... my bad :-)
I just did it to one of my ka's and it took 10 min. start to finish.

I have already taken the piece off, I was wondering if I should put another one in there.
Please try and make an attempt at being helpful next time. You come off looking like an immature hard drug fiend that hasn't had his daily toke off the glass dick other wise.
Lay off the hard drugs!

yep, same thing happened to my KA in my S14. I never bothered to replace the chain guide either. Never had a problem with the timing chain.

Hey! If your upper guide is broken, you shouldn't be worring about that guide anymore, and don't replace. You should however, inspect your chain for wear, it just ate a peices of metal. Atleast an oil and oil filter change!!
OooM!

I'm dumbfounded. How in hell are people still confused about this?
BOTH the top and upper chain guides should be removed and discarded. Every 97+ KA (240, Altima, Frontier) no longer uses them. Nissan issued a TSB over 12 years ago to every dealer in the country to remove them if a customer complained of rattling noises. And WE ALL KNOW THIS and have since the beginning of the internet. I can't believe there's still people who live under a rock and don't know this shit.

Well when I was gonna remove them I called my local nissan dealership to be on the safe side, and the guy said they have no tsb for the issue. I also called another shop thats suppose to have any tsb the dealership would and they calimed to not have a tsb either. I dunno if they don't know what the hell their looking for or not, thats why if its like a case # or something to go along with it I might can help their ass out or something, cause I got absolutely nowhere.

You're right, even I knew that. But I was just wondering if there was any useful purpose it served.
