240SX National Convention (http://www.socal240sx.org/convention/)

Who's going to be part of our caravan to the Convention? I think so far it's just me, Mike, and David.

The first event starts at about 5:00 PM on Friday, July 26. Do you guys want to start driving on early Friday morning? Or start sometime on Thursday and stay at a hotel the night before the event?

If we go on a Friday, I think we should start driving by about 8:00 AM. The bigger the group, the more people are gonna show up late, and the more pit stops we'll have to make along the way. So if we start at 8 in the morning that'll give us plenty of time to get there and check-in to the hotel. And if we end up with a lot of people, we can go in two separate caravans if that'll seem more appropriate.

If we stay at the event hotel (Holiday Inn), reservations'll need to be made before July 8. Let's try to figure out who's going and who will be staying with who before that date.

Everyone please get a 14 channel 2-way radio (those short range walkie talkies). This way we can easily talk to each other on the road. I think they're about $60 for two. Please share if you have an extra one.

Which highway do you guys prefer to take to SoCal? I think our options are 1, 101, and 5. (I've never driven to SoCal so I'm really not sure.)

ok ok, you guys convinced me, i'm signing up today for the convention. Few questions.......

~Where we gonna get out cars teched at for the track?(how we do that?)
~Anyone need a helmet/ buy one?
~We all gonna split a hotel or stay at someone's place?
~What's your gas mileage for your car? (so we know how many times to stop, we should be able to make it with one fill up if your car doesnt' guzzle gas)

I say leave friday morning, 101 is much more fun to drive, some good hills and not at boring at 5 even though it does take a little longer. I drive there all the time, going through SB on the way to LA.

I am in San Luis Obispo, which is like 4 hours south of the bay area. I am half way between LA and SF. So I wouldn't mind joining the group half way down I guess. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

That sounds good, I think we'll stop at Madonna Inn on the way down, it's nice and big, probably across the street at the McDonald's shopping center. Good place to get gas, that's where I usually stop. We'll work out times later.

Found one answer, email Alex Chang to make an appointment for your car to be teched Sat night at a hotel in Lancaster.

I just realized I put 2 hours, where its more like 4 &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

BlackFox, You talkin about the Madonna Inn in San Luis...sweet! I could just meet you guys there.

As for that Tech thing goes, I heard that you can get your car tech inspected at a shop near you, you will have to call around to see who does that sort of thing, but it shouldnt be to big of a deal in the bay area. But If you can't find anything you will have to make an appointment with Alex Chang for the night before.

Hey all

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Well actually I'm going and bringing 2 other 240s along w/ me. &nbsp;The farm place your talking is Harris Ranch, ya it stinks there. &nbsp;5 is pretty straight and long takes me 4.5 hrs to get to L.A. going that route ( I left at 2:30 was in hollywood at 7<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'>0 in traffic <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('> oh ya we'll hit traffic when we get there which will suck but oh well. As far as lenght of time It all depends on how fast you drive and if you have your trusty radar dectector (went off 5 times that day I drove down there hehe) &nbsp;Nothing like detecting a cops radar, then u see him make a u turn and start coming your way only to pass you up and pull somebody else over. &nbsp;Always wanted to take 101 so I guess this could be fun. &nbsp;Also sounds like we can pick up some people on the way as well. &nbsp;

Also not sure how many people are going to willow springs that sunday but we can see if we can get a group to go S.D. to go check out the import scene if u know what I mean. &nbsp;Well ttyl , peace

Hey guys, I have already paid for the convention, so I will be there for sure. It's a good idea that we can meet up somewhere in the BayArea and go there together. So count me in! By the way, just wondering how many ppl here in Nor Cal will run on the track? A week ago, Alex (who runs the 240sx national conventon) told me that only me has paid for the track entrance fee in Nor Cal...... So I hope those people who want to run, please paid for it ASAP, cause it only has a few slots left. As I know, there will be at least 60+ 240sx will run on the track, I really can't wait to see this happen!

As for the Tech Inspection, here is the message from socal240sx.org, "If you are from out of state and cannot tech before the event, there will be an opportunity to have tech done on Saturday night by appointment only at the hotel in Lancaster. Please email Alex Chang at [email protected] to set up an appointment. If you live within 25 miles of a tech inspection shop, you MUST have your tech inspection done before the date of the event."

and there is a group buy running for the racing helmets. &nbsp; Please email Alex Chang for more information, his email address [email protected] , for a reminder, YOU CAN ONLY USE SA 95+ helmet for the track event. No motorcycle helmets are allowed.

There's a CalTrans station near my house, it's on the way south, pretty much as far south as we can go and still be in SJ. It's a big lot and easy to find from 101 or 85. We can work details later.

I'm running on the track. (if i get one of the spots, check going out tomorrow)

Alex, your check is on the way (if you read this)

Yes, check your car, we can do that somewhere.

I'm from southern Oregon, and will also be running the track. &nbsp;Would you guys mind caravaning with the NorthWest Nissans 240sx members? &nbsp;Since I'm half way NorCal and the northwest, I can attend either caravan, however I think it would be cool for the northwest to meet up with the NorCal caravan. &nbsp;The northwest still has not set up a caravan, so I will inform them of this so that they may plan a NorthWestNissans/NorCal meet/caravan. &nbsp;

I'll keep y'all in touch.

Hey Silverx240sx TJ. How long would it take for you guys to get to the SF Bay Area?

For now, let's assume that we Bay Area people will depart on Friday morning. I originally said 8:00 AM but that's about when rush hour traffic begins. I think we should all meet at a certain spot at 6:00 AM and depart at 7:00. What do you all think?

That means that if the NorthWest people are going to meet with us, they'll either need to start driving veeery early in the morning or maybe start on Thursday instead. Either way, I don't mind if they caravan with us. (By the way, does NorthWest refer to Washington and Oregan states or Canada?)

Let's also decide on a few places where we'll rendezvous with people. The first place obviously will be in the Bay Area, where we begin. I think somewhere in San Jose would be good because it'll be on the way to SoCal, and 101 is right there. BlackFox mentioned a CalTrans station.

San Luis Obispo, at Madonna Inn, will be another rendezvous point so we can meet with BadMoJo. (We'll need to get his phone number later.)

Are we picking up anybody else along the way?

ATTENTION
If you'll be part of the caravan, please e-mail ([email protected]) S14.5 Mike the following info:
- Name
- Phone number
- Location

Here's what I got so far:

Meet time and location
6:00 AM - San Jose - CalTrans station

Departure time
7:00 AM

Route
Highway 101

Rendezvous points
1. San Jose - CalTrans station
2. San Luis Obispo :P - Madonna Inn

Destination
La Mirada - Holiday Inn (event hotel)

I say the Blossom Hill exit off of 101 on Monterey Highway, It's between Bernal and Blossom Hill on Monterey. The traffic going south will not be very bad at all. North is what you have to worry about if you're in the south bay. So I think 6 is a little early. 7 is more like it, lets the people driving from far away get some more rest because it'll be a long day for them.

http://maps.yahoo.com/py....i=&ds=n (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=Monterey+Highway&city=San+Jose&state=CA&csz=San+Jose,+CA+95111&slt=37.291309&sln=-121.849237&mlt=37.254101&mln=-121.797563&name=&zip=95111&country=us&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&mag=8&desc=&cs=9&newmag=9&poititle=&poi=&ds=n)

The lot is located next to the shopping center (with walmart) on the map it is to the right (south) of Ford Road.
On the map, south 1st street is Monterey Highway

So we all planning on splitting rooms at the hotel?

It takes about 5-6 hours from my place here in Medford, Oregon. &nbsp;I'm only 30 minutes away from the Oregon/California border.

NorthWest does include Canada, Washington, and Oregon. &nbsp; We'll just have to time it with the NorCal. &nbsp; If they don't get anything set up, I'll just drive to my cousins in Hercules, California and meet up with you all.

My only suggestion to you guys is that you should try to make it to the hotel AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, or Speedzone.

If you leave San Jose at 7AM, it will take you at least 7-8 hours to get to LA assuming there is no traffic... but on a Friday, once you get into Ventura County you are guaranteed to hit traffic all the way from Ventura to San Bernadino, a stretch of about 150 miles.

I high recommend you to take the I-5 to get down here as fast as possible. The stretch of drive between the San Fernando Valley and where Speedzone is takes about 1-2 hours in traffic, if you are lucky. If you are late, and you miss dinner, I won't be able to refund your money...

do not take highway 101, leaving santa paula (ventura county). it took me about 4 hours to get past hollywood. do so via the 5 fwy if possible. I've encountered traffic where I went less than 10 miles in about 1 hour or more. (on 101).

BlackFox
06-12-2002, 12:10 PM
I've driven from SJ to SB in 3 1/2 hours consistantly (ave 80 mph) then from SB to Hunington Beach takes me 2 hours (with traffic, around the hollywood area)

So if we leave south SJ at 8am, and add some time for a stop and stuff, we can get to La Mirada at around 2pm (give or take a little)

Speedzone starts at around 5pm and I assume we want to get there as soon as possible. So, that's in City of Industry

http://maps.yahoo.com/py....ections (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/ddResults.py?Pyt=Tmap&tarname=&tardesc=&osd=&newname=&newdesc=&dsd=&newHash=&newTHash=&newErr=&newTErr=&newFL=Use+Address+Below&newaddr=17871+Castleton+Street&newcsz=city+of+industry%2C+ca&newcountry=us&newTFL=Use+Address+Below&newtaddr=&newtcsz=La+Mirada%2C+CA&newtcountry=us&Submit=Get+Directions)

I'm not sure exactally where the hotel is, but doesn't look like it's too far from Speedzone. (city driving seems like the best idea for that)

If everyone has their stuff together and we leave at the latest at 8am then we should be fine. or if you want 7:30am. Everyone just get there on time and don't take too much time in San Luis, get gas/food/other 240's and go.

I think there should also be groups of us, incase we get separated along the way. Everyone should have maps of where we're going too incase you get lost/cut off from the group

Is it confirmed that the NorCal caravan will leave at 7am Friday morning? &nbsp;Where is the meeting place? &nbsp;I'm not very familiar with California except I-5, 80, and surrounding areas, primarily north of San Francisco. &nbsp;

I'm not sure if I'm taking anyone with me, so we'll see later.

Are we going to receive email of the names and phones, just in case we need to contact each other on the way to the meeting place?

When we get all the information settled, I'll relay the information with the northwest attendees (approximately 5), so we may either plan to meet up or if we cannot make the caravan.

Keep us posted.

We're still discussing so nothing's confirmed yet. Don't worry we still have plenty of time to decide on things.

For now we plan on meeting at the CalTrain/Amtrak parking lot in the southern part of San Jose. I've never been there but BlackFox says it's there, so we'll believe him. =) Anyway we'll find out the exact address later on.

I don't know how many stops yet. At least one for sure, because the whole trip from the SF Bay Area will be over 300 miles. Personally I'd like to stop once at least every 2 or 3 hours to rest and let the car cool off.

We're planning this as if we're going to the hotel first (so we can all drop off our luggages and take a dump in clean bathrooms), but if anyone wants to go straight to Speedzone, I don't think that'll be a problem.

As far as getting our cars teched, I haven't looked into it because I won't be running my car on the track. Here's what the Convention web site says regarding tech inspection:

- Please have your tech inspection completed prior to the track event. A list of tech inspection shops is available on the SpeedTrialUSA website. It is your responsibility to have your car ready by the event. If you show up late and cannot tech on-time, we will not wait for you to start the event.

- If you are from out of state and cannot tech before the event, there will be an opportunity to have tech done on Saturday night by appointment only at the hotel in Lancaster. Please email Alex Chang at [email protected] to set up an appointment. If you live within 25 miles of a tech inspection shop, you MUST have your tech inspection done before the date of the event.

Sorry Mike but I doubt that we'll get there in 4 to 5 hours even if we take highway 5. If we're in a group, we'll be making more stops (more ppl = more calls from nature) and traveling slower.

The two SoCal people (Alex and Grant) who posted both suggested taking 5 rather than 101. We might want to take that into consideration. Maybe we'll go down on 5 and come back on 101. Comments? Opinions?

Either way, I'm told that we should try to reach the hotel before the afternoon commute starts, which would be around 3:00 PM. We want to avoid getting scattered in traffic and I wouldn't mind getting to Speedzone early. If we set 7:00 as the start time and 3:00 as the arrival time, that gives our group 8 hours to travel. That should be enough time on either highway, right?

ATTENTION
Again, please e-mail Mike at [email protected] your name, phone number, and location if you'll be caravaning with us. We're not going to spam you.

Here's a hint for you:

On a Friday, the "afternoon commute" starts at 7AM, I kid you not.

I'll say it again: &nbsp;taking the 101 will only add to your nightmarish experience of LA traffic jams on a Friday afternoon. &nbsp; There are parts of LA that clog up right through 9~10PM on weeknights...

Take the I-5 to the 210 to the 605 to the 5, that is the fastest way to get to the hotel. &nbsp; You take any other way, you'll be stuck in so much traffic you'd cry.

Hey I drank a lot that night!! lol. Quickest way to L.A. is taking the 101 south from SJ, to 152 east through the mountains, to the 5 south to L.A. From L.A. were gonna have to find alternate routes to avoid traffic. I have a good buddy of mine who lives in L.A. but goes to school here so I'll ask him what routes to take. BTW the fastest time it took me to get down to L.A. was 3.5 hours. Of course this was on a Sat. morning and I took the 5 the whole way down.....and this was in a mini-van...LOL I'll email you soon Mike.

sup guys...this is justin...sqxcons bro(jason). 152 is near down gilroy and cuts across from 101 to 5. This is a nice section with rolling hills and turns.

I say just keep it simple and go 101 until around hollywood then cut into the city if necessary. If 152 jams, which is does pretty often (first part is 2 way 1 lane) you're gonna be stuck there for days. Since we should have plenty of time, we have to make an effort to leave on time, even a bit of a traffic backup in LA should not make us late.

BadMoJo- Don't worry, at least I will swing by San Luis &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> &nbsp;

154 is toward Slovang? Doesn't that take even longer?

Note: everyone and their mother take 5 to LA so it will be busy no matter what, once it goes into LA.

We should have at least 2 groups, one for the cruisers and one for you speed demons.
What's everyone's comfortable hwy speed (mine is around 80 depending on the area, slow down in Santa Maria hills/ SB speed traps everywhere)

Hey Jeff, I know what brand youre talking about, lol. &nbsp;I was gonna get a 'Nor*Cal' hat. haha. &nbsp;Anyways, 152 in the morning shouldn't be a problem with traffic (man, talk about traffic on the 152 in the evening on a friday on a holiday!! &nbsp;I was stuck there for 3 hours, PLUS there was an accident and some civillian directing traffic! lol!! took me 10 hours to get to L.A. that time, hahhaa.) but I wouldn't mind taking 101 tho, cuz I ALWAYS wanted to take 101 but from what I was told, it takes hella long and there are cops everywhere. &nbsp; But since were just gonna cruise (or maybe I should borrow my brother's V1? &nbsp; <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':sly:'> ) I wouldn't mind taking that drive. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Hotel 1 - Event hotel (http://www.socal240sx.org/convention/hotel.html)

The event hotel's $79 rooms are for either 1 or 2 persons. Reservations need to be made before July 8.

You can fit more people into one room if you'd like to split the cost more, but you only get 2 beds and 2 hotel room keys.

In my group, I'm sleeping on the bed. =P J/k... We'll decide later. Right now three of us sharing one room for sure, but we might get one or two or three more people later to save some money.

We're gonna break the group up into 2 or 3 sub groups right? because we're bound to get separated if we have that many cars. Don't forget to get walkietalkies people.

Someone wanna split a room? or a few people?

I think a second stop in Thousand Oaks might be good. It's nice and open, we can stop at the automall. There's gas and food. If you fill up in San Luis you should be able to make it into LA (depending on gas mileage)...... post up your gas mileage and Danio could you edit the gas mileage into the list of people so it's easier to read. Thanks <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

Yeah I was thinking we'll have sub-groups, and each one will have a "leader" responsible for keeping his group together and not losing anyone. Each leader will also have his group's phone numbers. Hehheh we should report in like Star Wars. ^_^ "Red 2, standing by." "Red 5, standing by."

I think if we fill up twice along the way (about every 120 miles), we should all be fine. IIRC the trip will be about 350 miles from San Jose. If your car can't travel more than 120 miles without having to refuel, please let us know. =)

Usually I refuel after going about 230 miles, and about 270 miles if it's all highway.

I think we should also have a stop or two before San Luis Obispo.

I drove 366 miles on my last tank, warning light was on and off. So it doesn't really matter to me where we stop. I say less stops the better.

Anyone want to room with me? or a 4 person room?

BadMoJo
06-17-2002, 01:55 PM
yeah, i can go like 330 or so on a tank. So we shouldnt need to many gas stops if we are all full from the start. But bathroom and snack breaks are always good.

As far as rooms go I am taking a friend with me so we have a room covered.

Sub groups is a good idea to but we should all try to stick together as long as possible.

We just had another meeting last night about the convention, and we agreed to have one of the guys arrange a drive from the hotel to Speedzone at 3PM on Friday to "lead" the out-of-towners to Speedzone.

Again, I warn you guys about taking the 101. &nbsp;Between the hotel and Speedzone alone it will probably take a good hour or 90 minutes. &nbsp;Even on weekends the 60 freeway is a big parking lot.

You can ultimately do whatever you want, but if you are late to Speedzone your parking space (if you have registered) will be given up, and you might not get your food.

It is all listed on the website.

Each track session is 20 minutes long. &nbsp;Since there are 4 run groups, and we start around 8:30 or 8:40, we would have a complete cycle every hour and 20 minutes.

Assuming every run group gets equal track time, you would get at least 4 20-minute runs, or perhaps 5 if everyone is on time.

But trust me, if you have never been to a track event before, you'll want to go home by mid afternoon. &nbsp;Track events gets tiring real quick real fast.

How about this:

We all meet at the San Jose Train Station (or where ever the final place that we decide is). &nbsp; Then 2-3 groups take different routes to pick up members. &nbsp; For example group 1 will take I-5, group 2 will take 101, and group 3 will take another highway/freeway, and each of the group will pick up members along the way. &nbsp; And meet again where all 3 roads/streets/highways/freeways meet, then we all go to the hotel or Speedzone. &nbsp; Will that be timed right or the members using I-5 will be waiting for the other 2 groups?

Is this what you guys are thinking of/discussing?

TJ

PS. Any one close to Hercules/Pinole/Richmond, that would want to meet up to go to the final NorCal meeting place? &nbsp;I'll be staying with my cousin before the meet, and I'm not at all familiar with the places other than those cities.

Thanks!

VOLUNTEER TO BE A GROUP LEADER!
Please volunteer to be a caravan group leader. The group leader will be responsible for keeping his group together and reporting in to the other groups.

For example, if someone is late to San Jose, his group will wait for him while the other groups go on ahead. His group leader will call him to find out his status, and also report to the other groups. The other groups will wait for that group at the first suggested stop.

Or if during the trip someone has to take a leak and can't make it to the next suggested stop, that person's group will stop with him and meet with the other groups later at the next suggested stop. Each group leader MUST have a mobile phone so that he can contact, or be contacted by, the other groups if they're out of the 2-way radios' range.

Mike: I don't think we can get a hotel room that'll fit 14 people. I don't want to share a bathroom with so many people anyway.

TJ: I don't think 101 and 5 meet anywhere until we get very close to LA, so it's probably not necessary to meet somewhere if there's gonna be different groups taking different highways.

Alan: We don't need your friend's name if he's gonna be your passenger. E-mail Mike your info so we'll be able to contact you by e-mail and by phone.

I guess the plan in this thread is to take 101, mainly because we'll be stopping at a couple places near 101 to pick up people. If anyone feels that taking 5 will be a lot better for whatever reasons (time, don't like big groups, etc.), feel free to start another thread and plan a separate caravan.

Alan: We don't need your friend's name if he's gonna be your passenger. E-mail Mike your info so we'll be able to contact you by e-mail and by phone.

I guess the plan in this thread is to take 101, mainly because we'll be stopping at a couple places near 101 to pick up people. If anyone feels that taking 5 will be a lot better for whatever reasons (time, don't like big groups, etc.), feel free to start another thread and plan a separate caravan.</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

As for the traffic issue, well I've never been on 101 so I don't know how long it takes but I do know LA traffic to an extent, it sucks, if you never been, well all I can say is once you experience it makes the bay area look good IMHO. There's nothing like being on a bumper to bumper 10 lane freeway on a saturday afternoon <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>. It's funny too cause my friend down there has a 240 and he detuned it to gain some low end because he can never use top end cause he sits in traffic so much.

Just for a count Anyone who wants to take the 5 freeway or not go 101 email me @ [email protected] That way we'll know how many people, if any want to take hwy 5. Mike I'll let you know how many people want to go that route as soon as I find out.

My thoughts are 5 is straight, easy, fast, but boring
101 longer, some uncertainty (taffic wise), should be funner though.

I DUNO WHICH WAY IS FASTER!!!! why can't we all just go together. well the point is to pick up the other guys on the way. if we take a different route other then that, whats the point of the caravan shiet. we are all not in any rush since its going there for fun. one person says other place has traffic and another place has traffic. why dont we just take the route where we can actually meet up with the other guys? okkkkkk? the point of the caravan is for everyone to go together, not the opposite. Supposedly 5 is faster. Some people might want to take that route so they can wake up and depart later or arrive at the hotel and Speedzone earlier.

As far as us not being in any rush, we actually are kind of in a rush. Over half of the people attending the Convention are from SoCal and they'll have much less of a problem than us getting to the Event Hotel by 3 PM. 3 PM is when they're caravaning from the hotel to Speedzone, where supposedly parking and food are limited. We want to try and make that 3 PM caravan to Speedzone.

Yes we are going there to have fun, and getting there is half the fun (haha cliche ^_^), but getting there on time so that we don't miss out on things that we've paid for is even more important. So if anyone wants to take 5 to SoCal, we'll understand. (Well, Mike might understand. =P) Just let us know ASAP. But of course we all know that sticking to our big caravan is the better choice because it's more fun, you'll have more people to talk to along the way, and it's just awesome having a road trip alongside so many other 240SXs. ;)

Some of us are taking 101 for sure because, like Mike said, we're picking up people along the way. In this forum thread we're planning the 101 caravan.

Now I'm gonna move my previous jumbo post to this page.

I think you're the only one from north of SF. If you'll be at Hercules, it's not hard to find your way down to San Jose, if that's what you're worried about. Just take 880 South.

The plan is to head over to the hotel first so everyone can drop off their stuff, but that's assuming we'll be able to check-in, drop off our stuff, and get back to our cars to join the Speedzone caravan on time.

Glad you brought this up. If during our trip we feel that we won't have time to stop at the hotel first, maybe we'll head straight for Speedzone.

Or maybe our plan should be to go directly to Speedzone. Then during our trip if we find ourselves way ahead of schedule, we go to the hotel first.

What do you all think? Try to get to the hotel before 3:00 so we can join the caravan to Speedzone, or skip the hotel and try to get to Speedzone on our own by 4:00?

Bill: No idea when we'll hit San Luis Obispo. 11 AM plus/minus 1 hour? Dunno. We'll give you a call when we're near, or you can call us. :P

Is that Blockbuster easy to see once we get off the highway, and big enough for about 13 cars to park? I just know that the Blockbusters around here have small parking lots and 13 cars would take up a big chunk of the lot. We'd be stopping a while for people to peepee, gas up, and/or get some food.

TJ: Nobody in our caravan's from Stockton. I think Stockton's about 2 hours away from where we're meeting in San Jose. In case you don't know the way from Stockton, it's:
&nbsp; 5 South
&nbsp; 205 West, which becomes 580 West
&nbsp; 680 South
&nbsp; Mission Blvd exit (the 2nd one, after Automall/Durham) towards 880
&nbsp; Mission Blvd becomes 880 South after the big intersection
&nbsp; (Use MapQuest for the more detailed directions.)

From there, just keep going and you'll be in San Jose. You might want to start driving by 4:45 AM to meet us on time. O_o

hmmm, yeah the parking lot there is to small now that I think of it. The best spot would be the Big 5 parking lot. To get to that get off on the Madonna exit as planned, take a left turn. and about .3 miles or less there is a McDonalds on the left side of the road, turn in there, and drive past the McD's and Big 5 is on the right, lots of parking there.

- Group leader. We need one more group leader. Each group leader will be responsible for keeping his group together and reporting in to the other group leaders. Each group leader must have a mobile phone so that he can contact, or be contacted by, the other groups if they're out of the 2-way radios' range.

JEFF: Please find out the address of that CalTrain/Amtrak station. Thanks.

I just got back from a week at my church empowerment camp so that's why I haven't been replying

Well, the station doesnt' really have an address but here's the official web site

http://www.transitinfo.org/Caltrain/Stations/Blossom.html

The red curved line above the station is labled 521, that's 101.
The station is 72

Here's the directions, you can check a map for clarification
~101 (north or south)

~Blossom Hill exit (coming from the north take a right, from south take a left)

~The road will split, go right (the road drops and swoops left, onto Monterey Road)

~You'll run into a signal light, turn left (you'll go under an overpass)

~You should be going South on Monterey and you will see Walmart, Albertsons, Walgreen, Taco Bell and stuff on your left side. Take a left on Ford Road (it's the signal light right after the shopping center, after Taco Bell)

~You'll see the parking lot on your right (of Ford Road), it's huge so you can't miss it.

BlackFox

Note for group leaders, do they know where they're going?

TJ- You know where he's talking about for the Madonna Inn stop, cause I do. So should the leaders know where we're going (been there before)? How fast do you drive on the freeway? Did we group the drivers by speed too?

As for Thousand Oaks, we can stop next to the automall. There's a shopping center. I don't remember what the name of the exit is, I just know it when I see it. You're driving down 101 and you'll see the automall on your left, take the first exit and turn left, you'll see the shopping center on your left (the shopping center is not that big but there's gas and food)

Who wants to split a hotel room? (someone that's mellow and likes to get sleep) one other person or more, I don't really mind. Who else is staying at the hotel?

Also please give us some info on the Saturday night tech inspection you mentioned. Thanks.

And to everyone else... Again, I'm not planning, or helping to plan, nor am I planning on planning where/when the SFBA people will get their tech inspections done.

Groups info. Well I've never been to any of the suggested stops that we've come up with. I don't know if TJ has either. That shouldn't be a problem though, I hope. We'll figure out exactly how to get to those places later (like which exits to take). I hope everyone's responsible enough to drive at a speed that doesn't leave anyone in the group behind or make the CHP pull us over. Remember when you're in a group, you can't be going at speeds like 90 or 100 mph.

This only happens in the mountains though, right? With AT you can't rely much on engine braking so maybe you were just overworking your brakes when going downhill. Maybe you wanna go in the mountains again and try using the brakes less (like braking harder to slow down and then release the brakes, rather than riding on the brakes) to see if that solves the problem. Or if you're going under 50 mph, try driving in 2nd gear.

Anyway, you might wanna post the problem in the Tech section so we don't get too off-topic here.

Hmm... I'm looking for a helmet myself, but aren't the ones you're offering "Street Helmets"? Are those "SA" rated? I thought that those might get "M" ratings and are not allowed for the track event. I think Alex mentioned something about not allowing those w/ "M" rated helmets on the track, "SA 2000" only. (Alex, if you read this, please correct me if I'm wrong)

I know that Don is selling a helmets for this event and has a few choices. I'm probably going to get my "Bell M2" Helmet from him, unless you can give me a better price? (Picking up from NorCal would be easier for me). Lemme know if the Star 1's are "M" or "SA 2000" rated. Aaron, that's a good question. On Bell's web site it says that the M helmets as well as the Star 1 all meet of exceed DOT/Snell and M2000 specs

I'm not sure what that means but I don't think Bell would make helmets that don't pass safety standards.

I don't think Bell makes the M2 anymore, it's not on their site unless someone has them in stock already

Found an answer, M is for motorcycle and has less specs it has to pass. SA is special application

So what helmets will pass SA? I don't see any made by Bell

Again, I stress that SA-rated helmets are the ONLY ONES the track officials will let you use. &nbsp;hell, I won't let you go on the track without SA-95 or newer rating helmets.

M-rating helmets are always cheaper. &nbsp;

There's a slight possibility that I won't be able to drive with you guys to SoCal because I might stay in Taiwan until July 26. If that becomes the plan, I'll try to book a flight that arrives in LA on the 27th early in the morning, and I'll need to ask someone to pick me up (possibly one of you :P). But right now that's all a maybe (and unlikely). I'll know for sure and let you guys know within a few days.

Daniel-

&nbsp; &nbsp;I would just like to suggest another route for us to get down there. Alex, as well as a lot of friends I know that live down in SoCal do not suggest Highway 101. While I know that you guys are planning that route, I will assume that there will be traffic on it no matter what the time. I think the best route would be for 101, to 152, then to Highway 5 so we can cruise into LA avoiding traffic on 101.
&nbsp;
&nbsp; &nbsp; As for a group, just put me in anywhere... I'm not sure about my sleeping arrangements yet so don't worry about me. I just want to make sure I won't be driving down alone. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>

&nbsp; &nbsp;Your suggestion of a meet is a good idea so that things can be straigtened out and agreed upon. While not all of us will be able to make it (especially those in the Northwest) I hope that the NorCal group can finally make a decision about everything. If we wait too long, we might end up sleeping in our cars. Someone suggest a time/place to meet (preferably the weekends) so things get settled and this thread doesn't expand to 10+ pages! &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

ok, I'm calling tomorrow to make hotel reservations for me and cole. if 1 or 2 more people want to share a room with us then you can just pay me later. I'm going to make hotel reservations at both hotels, one for each night, so I suggest if you're going to make hotel reservations do it now.

Who's selling helmets? the Bell M2's?

P.S. We're taking 101 to pick up people along the way, not for petty traffic reasons &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'> &nbsp;again if people want to take 5 down go ahead and form a group. me and daniel is going to say this again in the nicest way possible. we are taking hwy 101 to meet/ pick up other guys on the way. if we take another hwy that is not possible, we are not leaving anybody behind. lets stick with this plan because we have no another choice. like daniel stated if anyone wants to go a different route feel free to go because again we don't want to leave guys behind. unlike if we can pick up the guys on 101 and if we are done with that perhaps we will take another hwy. again sticck with the plan &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/satisfied.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':satisfied:'>

Something else we haven't considered is having Cole and Bill meet us somewhere on 5. They might have to drive farther but that might save us time. Actually we can even meet with Cole somewhere before 152 if he just drives a bit north. That's just another possible plan which we still have plenty of time (a couple weeks) to decide on.

The special rate for the Park Plaza is under the SpeedTrials USA rate, just tell them that you're attending a track event at Willow Springs. Ask for the "in house reservations" when you call 661-948-0961 That's the hotel's # not the main reservations office in who knows where.

Caravan info (http://www.danzeth.com/240sx/convention2002.html)

The above link has the same stuff that I've been posting here. From now on I'll just update that page and mention it here.

Mike mentioned an interesting idea: driving to LA at night. Any comments on that idea? Why or why not?

I think that would definitely be more fun and faster, but we'd probably arrive too early to check in to our hotels. And by the time we leave for Speedzone, which would be 3 PM, we might be really tired.
Remember that the registration and payment due date is July 22.

A couple reminders: Please get a 14-channel FRS 2-way radio if you don't already have one. If you have an extra one (they're often sold in pairs), please let us know so someone who doesn't have one can borrow it. The following people need to register (unless the convention registration person made a mistake).

The consensus at our meet in SF yesterday was that taking I-5 to the National Convention would be a better idea than taking Hwy 101.

Cole is willing to drive up from Salinas to meet at Gilroy before we head over to I-5.

Danio
07-15-2002, 08:04 PM
Bill, since we'll be taking I-5, are you still gonna join the caravan?

Where in Gilroy should we meet Cole?
Should we still leave by 6 AM?

Does everyone want to caravan together back home after the convention? Since we won't be pressed for time, we can take Hwy 101. If you won't be caravaning with us on our way home, please let us know.

Thanks for the info Joe. Guess Mike forgot to tell me.

Highway 101 and Interstate-5 groups
Yeah having a Hwy 101 group and an I-5 group would be another option. Smaller groups would most likely travel faster also, making time not as big of an issue. For now let's say that Jeff will have a group taking Hwy 101 and the rest will take I-5.

Which of you would like to be in the Hwy 101 group? So far it would be Jeff and Bill. Cole and Ken, what about you guys, since you and Jeff are sharing a hotel room? For now I'm going to put you guys in the Hwy 101 group but let me know if you'll be taking I-5. Anyone else taking 101? Let me know so I can update the info. (I'm not trying to kick anyone out. :P Just want to know what's convenient or preferable to everyone.)

Edit: Caravan info (http://www.danzeth.com/240sx/convention2002.html) updated.

I'll go wherever. Doesn't matter to me. Maybe next year after I experience one freeway or the other. I'm coming from WA, so my experience with the CA freeway system is rather limited. As long as I arrive at the destination with some 240's around me, I'll be happy. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Sorry I've been lagging a little. Caravan info (http://www.danzeth.com/240sx/convention2002.html) has been updated.

Just a couple reminders again. The last day to register and pay is July 22. That's Monday. Also please get an FRS radio if you don't have one. Either buy one or borrow one. And remember to bring batteries for it also.

We are one week away from the convention. (WOOHOO!! =D) Let's get everything planned out and ready to go as soon as possible. (WOOHOO! ^_^)

Jeff can you please tell us again how to get to our meeting spot?

BlackFox

hehe, okay, here's directions to the CalTrain Station (first meeting spot)

From 101:
1. Exit Blossom Hill from 101
&nbsp; (from South 101, turn right, left for North)

2. Road will split, follow road right, Leads down to Monterey Hwy (82)

3. Turn left at Monterey Hwy signal light.

4. Follow Monterey Hwy south for a few signal lights, past the Monterey Plaza Shopping Center.

5. Turn left on Ford Road.

6. You'll see the CalTrain parking lot on your right. It's huge you can't miss it. If you pass it, go down to the next light and make a u-turn.

http://www.danzeth.com/240sx/map_meet.gif

Be on time!
And show up on time! I'm sure many of us will want to take pics or film our 17 240SXs before we depart. Don't let your car be left out! =)

FRS radios
Please bring at least one FRS radio and extra batteries! If you still have not gotten one, please get one. They cost from $20 to over $80. All you need is a standard one with 14 channels. Rather than flashing the blinkers and having everyone stop whenever someone has something to say, we'll just use these to contact each other while on the road. These may even come in handy in future 240SX meets, especially in areas where our mobile phones don't have reception.

Group leader
It just occured to me that TJ (San Jose) doesn't have a mobile phone, which means he won't be able to be in contact with Jeff's group, or my group if we split up. Example: If TJ's group wants to go faster because my group is too slow, TJ and I will be responsible for letting our groups stay in contact with each other through our mobile phones because the FRS radios will be out of range. It really doesn't matter who calls who but it's probably safer to just assign someone so we know that somebody is capable of contacting other groups. Does anyone in TJ's group have a mobile phone and can takeover that responsibility?

Edit: Or we can just go as the 101 group and the I-5 group. And those of us on I-5 will split up only if we really have to.

Day 1: Speedzone
Lotsa fun on those grip and drift karts, whatever they're called.

Day 2: Nissan HQ
Saw the most awesome 240SXs in CA. Nice raffle prizes, which Mike Tran won 7 of with his $180 of raffle tickets.

Day 2 - Night: Track hotel
Here's what this post is mainly about. At about 9:00 PM, at the hotel parking lot waiting for tech inspection, I found out from Rudy that Mike and his cousin, who said that they'd meet me at the hotel later, have backed out on sharing a room. I called Mike to confirm. No answer. Called again. Still no answer. No big deal. I then called his cousin, who picked up and confirmed that they decided to head back home early and won't be sharing the hotel room. Obviously I was a bit pissed off cuz 1) they didn't tell me and 2) $70 split three ways is very different from $70 paid by just me. I told Mike's cousin, probably with a raised voice, not to forget that they owe 2/3 of the cost of the room. He said he didn't know he had to pay, so I asked for Mike. Well he tried to talk out of paying, despite the fact that we had already agreed to split the cost of the hotels. Since his cousin claimed that he didn't know about it and Mike was the only one who agreed to splitting the cost, not his cousin, I told him to just pay for half, which he agreed to. Two hours later, Mike's cousin called me back saying I was trying to scam them because he called the hotel and they told him the rate for one person and two persons are the same rate of $80-something (which shouldn't have even mattered since Mike agreed to split the cost). I told him the rates are different, and that the rate for a two persons room is $70, not $80-something. He didn't believe me, which is understandable since the hotel gave him the wrong info. I told him to check the convention web site or call someone else attending the convention to confirm what I told him, which I don't think he did. I told him I want to talk to Mike but he said he's speaking for Mike. Since Mike was afraid to deal with me, I continued to discuss the matter with his cousin, with yelling coming from me which probably the entire hotel heard (Yes if you heard yelling, that was me.) and name-calling coming from him. Since the rate for one person is $10 less than the rate for two, he's only willing to pay $10, rather than split the $70 evenly. His response to them backing out after I had already reserved the room and checked in, and not telling me about it: "My bad." He said that Mike never agreed to splitting the cost, which is bullshit and I can have David back me up on this because the original plan was that Mike, David, and I would share hotel rooms and split the cost.

So what do I intend to do about this? I'll take the $10 instead of the $35 I'm owed, and inform the people who view this forum thread that Mike Tran is an irresponsible little fuck who doesn't keep his word, and lies about it.

And to Mike: Don't ever ask for rides from me again, and don't come to anymore events or meets that I organize. Some advice to you: don't break agreements, and especially don't have someone else solve your problems for you. Grow up and learn responsibility.

To the rest of you: hope you're having fun at the convention. I know I am, despite what this little prick and his cousin have done. I'm currently using the computer at the hotel. I'll see the rest of you at the track!

Excuse me? you wanna talk about growing up? Then you would've just called me and talked about this man to man instead of keeping the problem between you, me and my cousin public. and yes this does involve my cousin because you wanted his money too.

i'd have more stuff to say, but why don't you just call me. or talk privately with me.

hope everyone had a good time, too bad i missed out on track day.

NorCal 240SX
On Day 2 everyone saw some of the best 240SXs in CA. On Day 3 we saw many of them in action. Cole, it's too bad you had to miss out, but dooood... I had so much fun taking your place! ^o^ It was so worth the money, which I'll pay you back at our next meet. That 3-day convention was definitely a great experience and we gotta give props to Alex for setting it up. I might go to the next one even if I have to fly there.

And about the next meet. Some of us already started talking about it at dinner while we were caravaning back. It'll probably be a couple weeks from now. I'll post a discussion thread for it later. Hopefully most of the people (except one) from the caravan to SoCal will be able to come, as well as all the others who wished they had been able to go. This should turn out to be a fun meet. ^_^

Mike Tran's shit
I'm making this problem public 1) because I don't have to talk to you through your cousin this way, and 2) so people know why I'm pissed off and would not like to see you at anymore NorCal meetings. You don't just agree to something and then back out without telling the other person, and then have somebody else deal with your problem.

I did call you, but you were hiding behind your cousin's back. Remember? We did talk about this privately. You agreed to pay what you owe, and two hours later you had your cousin change the agreement for you. Who's the one who wouldn't talk about this man to man? I don't want your cousin's money. Like I said, he never agreed to splitting the cost. Only you did. I want your money, not his. If you still want to discuss this, I'll call you again (you, not your cousin) when I'm at a place where I can do some seriously pissed off yelling again. Otherwise, just PayPal me the $10 and maybe I'll forget about this, eventually. After all, you're only friggin' 16 years old.

Another thing about your irresponsibility. Weren't you the one who was supposed to bring Josh his spoiler? Guess I'll be doing that for you. And yeah it is too bad you missed out on the track day. You could have gotten some very nice video clips. Oh well.

Edit: Mike did you even give Grant Josh's money?

Hey Zilvia members, after returning home (safely) to canada from the 240sx convention I've decided to sign up here as I've frequently been here to lurk around and look at posts.

It was cool meeting some of you guys (who is who?) down in Cali, and also the NorCal caravan back home was cool too considering my missed the caravan going down due to a faulty fuel pump... &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
