I plan on doing my first real track event and I've waited forever for a driftday to finally become available.

But it looks like drift day 32 is an intermediate/advanced day.

And I also heard rumors that you need a nomex suit? For a drift day?

I know there are some events floating around but I can't seem to find any track events for newbies like me in around socal. Any links would be extremely helpful as i am getting anxious to finally get to drift in my first real event.

don't bother worrying about rumors until you see em concrete on www.driftday.com --I'm sure they'll have more beginner/intermediate events coming up. If you take a look at the calendar it shows that they're going to do thursday nights at irwindale (not sure when the first one is, but it'll be something to look forward to)

Drift buffet (driftbuffet.com) is going to be holding an event at el toro air base, I don't see it on their site yet though, so here's a link to a forum post by the man himself, Terry:

http://shift-lock.net//forums/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=840

Also check out www.justdrift.com and watch for track days at the balcony, it's a beginner-friendly track

I still don't know if I will have access to a tow vehicle. My dad has a SUV that would be suitable, the trick is getting him to let me have it.
Screw it. Even if I don't get the tow, I will drive hella slow with you guys. Ready any time. Looking at one or two events next month.
DJpimpflex: ETA on your car being ready?

I have heard that Irwindale is not so newbie-friendly for drifting... I, too, am very anxious for my first drift event but I am hesitant to sign up for DD32 because it's at Irwindale. I've been to California Speedway for DD31 just to check it out and give my friend a ride (he staffs for DD), and the track there was just an open parking lot with nothing to crash into.

Should I be weary of learning how to drift at Irwindale?

PS: First post back from my 3 month long pinking!! feels good...

The Irwindale oval and inner track is not that easy for beginners just because its so fast. Don't know if they are still using the parking lot. I have not been to a So Cal DD sence DD12. 3 people hit the wall that day, I was one.

now I'm even more nervous about Irwindale... I heard that California Speedway is no longer allowing drift events! :( is this true?

Yeah cali speedway is closed, so is qualcomm. Not sure if DD32 is in the parking lot or the infield or the full course. if it is parking lot or infield its not too bad for begginners, full course isnt horrible but its very intimidating for begginers and I wouldnt reccomend it you wont learn nearly as much if you arent comfortable pushing. Irwindale full course = fun though!!

Heres an idea of Irwindale vs. cali speedway

Much less to hit at cali speedway :)

Yeah... I remember at Fontana, it was jsut a bunch of knocked down cones... at Irwindale, I haven't been there but from pictures I've seen, it just looks like a big oval... Is there a inner course that involves less walls and more turns???

Sil-Abc

cali speedway is pretty simple. just a couple of lightposts and cones haha. i havent tried irwindale but that shit looks fun. im not sure how it is now cuz i went back in DD10 haha.

Matt(djNONpimpflex) hurry up with ur car so we can go

kenversusryu, just go to a dirtbike shop in your city and buy one. I bought my open faced Snell M2005 rated helmet that way for $63. For a Snell SA2005 rated (autosports) you're usually looking at $100 to $200. Check the requirements on the event you want to drive in, some require different safety equipment than others...

Stoked about the Thursday night thing, especially since our dealership is soooo close to Irwindale. Basically mount tires, leave work and head straight to the track!

Seriously, I know alot of advanced drivers who have eaten the wall there (myself included).
This may be the first drift day I'll go just to watch. I'm bringing snacks and an easy up, we can have a "watching new guys crash" party, and then make offers on their parts.:eek3d: I feel so wrong saying that.

I have seen a lot of ametuer drivers do fine at irwindale. Not my recomendation to go :) but as long as they dont try to drift the banking a lot can be learned and if they take it easy helps to get used to walls. Because lets face it not too many "friendly" tracks anymore. I just got back from Horsethief Mile Drift and it was probably the most fun I have had ever, at least in a long time. Irwindale is fun as hell though!
