Here's my problem. I need to remove the crankshaft pulley on my redtop sr so that I can put in a new front main seal. I also need to remove the timing cover so I can put some new liquid gasket down while my engine is out to make sure I dont have any more leaks. Is there any way to go about removing the crankshaft pulley and timing cover without taking off the timing chain and having to deal with setting the timing? I had someone pick up a crankshaft pulley remover from advance auto, but they gave me some huge kit that is for most chrysler cars and big engines. If someone could walk me through this process it would help a lot.
Thanks...

The pulley should come off by hand once the bolt is off. If not, a few nudges from a rubber mallet should free it. Also, what do you mean by timing cover? The SR has a front cover that houses the oil pump, but in order to remove that the cylinder head, oil sump, and oil pan need to be removed. Once all of that is removed, resetting the mechanical timing involves setting the rotating assembly at #1 TDC and aligning a link on the chain with a mark on the crank sprocket which takes a second.
Get a service manual.

Every time i try to turn the bolt everything moves. Any suggestions on that? By timing cover I just mean the front cover. Any ideas on where to get a service manual. I found one online, but it's not that detailed and easy to use.

well i have been through this before. you do not need to remove the head and bottom oil pan. just have patience and look at it and you'll figure it out.as for the main pulley you have to use an impact wrench. or you could lock the car in gear then do it. once the front cover is off you dont need to mess with the timing since all it does is cover it.

I'll try the impact wrench tomorrow. As far as putting it in gear. The engine is out of the car and on an engine stand.

to remove the pulley, all i did was just carefully put a small bar and pull back. Being sure not to damage the pulley. I pulled back a couple times in 1 spot then switch spots. Until eventually it came right out.

Thats wut i usually do, small pry bar at 4 points around the pulley. Just make your way around till its off. As far as the front cover, the fsm tells you to take the head off and the upper oil pan since its "sandwiched" between the 2. It is possible to take the cover off with the head and lower pan inplace but its tricky. Remember the cover is sealed with liquid gasket to the block so thats the tricky part. If anything, id suggest alteast taking the upper pan off. Also to the take the cover off, there are 4 bolts total thats inside the engine. 2 on top inside the head just in front of the cam gears and 2 on the the bottom, you have to take the sump off to get to those bolts.

Haha, i removed the pulley with a socket and LONG breaker bar. Secure it so it'll loosen the bolt, and then crank it just once. The nut should be broken loose, then, remove, wiggle wiggle wiggle.
Putting it back was kinda hard as the little key on the crank itself came off. And i kinda knocked out from a power surge.

Hard to do when the engine is on a stand, like he mentioned above.

yes like fliprayzin240sx said, i highly recommend removing the head and upper oil pan off. It is much easier taking off the front cover that way. It lessens the risk of damaging your front cover all together while removing it.

Hey, i dont mean to threadjack at all, but while we're in the spirit of crank pulley removal... I have a KA24DE and need to get the crank pulley off, Ive tried to put the car in gear and turn it, but the motor will turn almost a full revolution before i can even BEGIN to try to turn it, and also, is it left hand or right hand thread?

its a standard thread. Put the car in 5th gear and put the ebrake up. It should be easy to get some resistance after that.

Meh, my eBrake isnt exactly drift worthy... needs adjustment. Ill get my buddy to stomp the brakes... Maybe its slippin at the clutch though?

just throw the e-brake up, car in gear.
keep the rear wheels on the ground. put some bricks or something in front of them.
brakes will work. still, i'd be really really really surprised if you could move the entire car with the tranny in gear

The car moves... lol. Even in 5th she was creeping ever so slightly

yeah put some bricks in the front of your wheels and let someone hold the brakes. Take a breaker bar to it.
