View Full Version : Has anyone else ever done this?

I actually fit it under the "cluster glass". Had to rework the circuit board and relocate the blinker indicators and such, but it is an awesome location and I think is very clean...... opinions?

Looks pretty good to me. Reminds me of Porsche styling...
It sucks it covers part of the gauges, but its good it only covers the lower portion of the RPM gauge (the area not used at all during racing).

he could have put it in one of those side vents right there...that would have been more 'sleeper' and not cause so much trouble. whatever floats his boat though.

not my bag of tea.. i like mickey mouse ear style instread.. i got one on the left and right side mounted on teh dash just above the cluster.. Easier to see and adjust eyes. Besides, I cant even see my gauge cluster, i like to adjust my steering wheel as low as possible for my comfort and the steering wheel blocks my view anyways.
Do your needles even clear that?

Yes, his needles will clear, If you look close you can see he trimmed them down to compensate.
Not a bad little DIY, although it does look a bit thrown in. Maybe if it didnt cover so much of the tach it would look a bit better. At least with the MPH you can see the numbers fairly well.

Why does your speedo go to 115? I swear mine only goes to 110.

^^He's using the sohc speedo witch goes to 115, I did the same thing. The dohc speedo is 110.
Wait, that is the sock cluster, Did you turbo your single slammer? Or does your tach work? What motor are you running?

I put a miniature shift light in place of the OE water temp gauge on my S14, same type of work and a lot of trimming and resoldering needed. Not something I'd do again, but the gauge was useless anyway so I didn't mind tossing it.
I think it would look better without the carbon face or chrome bezel on the boost gauge.
And my stock speedo goes up to 199mph, lol.

Thanks for the input guys.....the main reason I didn't buy something off the shelf or put it in one of the vents was that I wanted to do something different, which is what I believe it is. I don't like how the speedo ended up showing better, but it is exactly centered? Who knows. I am going to either paint the cluster bezel a matching silver (rice I know), or shoot the guage bezel flat black......I think it should. blend in a little more. I don't really want the guage to blend in, but be more of a "how the hell did you do that?" lol. As far as the engine:

it looks pretty cool. i like it better when you put the gagues under the radio or on the panel over the drivers side door but its your car.

I like it..
I don't like the gauge overlap but the creativity gets you some points.
+2 for mickey mouse ears tho..

i think thats retarded, you shouldve put it in place of the stock fuel or temp gauge
TruckFortySX

Ithink about that next time I realize that my DD is on empty or overheating. After all functionality=overrated, right?

What they're saying is:
The stock water temp is crap.. its 3 stage and SHOULD be upgraded if you plan to modify this car.. which judging from the boost gauge, implies you do.
So since you are getting a different water temp gauge, put the boost gauge in OE water gauge location. (Or the aftermarket water temp gauge and put the boost somewhere else.)
And you should be able to figure out how many trip miles you get per tank.. and then keep an eye on that. But I wouldn't cover the stock fuel gauge.

I can testify to that. The ONE time my car ever overheats, and I didn't notice a thing untill after my motor was shot.
Then a good 10minutes later, the guage started to go up. I'm never going to trust any guages like that ever again.

same thing happened to me as welll last summer....i noticed that the car wasnt sounding right and then i could smell my exhaust wrap really bad and then i was like oh shit, something is wrong! so i pulled over at a gas station and next thing i knew...... the rad cap blew off and the car started steaming! luckily it didnt seem to have hurt the engine because a few weeks later i dynoed it at 259rwhp. stock with a few bolt ons!

You need a new steering wheel. That chrome thing looks mexican style....
Oh and the guage. Not really my style... What are you gonna do when you wanna put more guages cause to tell you the truth, Boost is NOT the most important guage... Oil pressure is super important, especially with modified cars.. I've had my fair share of starting customers cars and seeing that oil pressure guage stay at zero... Thank god they were there though.. Saved countless motors...

as far as gauge placement goes, i woulda put it were the stock digital clock is, if thats possible to do.
and you coulda mounted another gauge were the stock worthless water temp. is. then you coulda further cleaned up the cluster by making a new plastic cover that didnt have the hole for the hour/minute ajuster knob... also a black bezel + gauge face over silver/carbon fiber woulda looked further stock-ish which is more my style
really like the idea though

Ya well I took $20 off of what a friend owed me for a Haonda turbo kit for the guage, so picky is not what I'm going to be, lol. I'm going to paint the damn bezel anyways...... Oh, and where would I mount the new temp guage? Possibly somewhere where I didn't want to put the boost in the first place? hmmmmmm

Ya the wheel was cheap, half the weight of stock, and had a good offset, hehe. Oh ya and it makes me laugh too.......

Very nice. I was thinking of doing something like that with a shift light.
