View Full Version : new header, too loud now
Hey guys
Just threw on a DC sports header
Had to remove the stock cat, I replaced it with a Magnaflow cat.
So my set up is now Header > Magnaflow cat > 2..25" pipping > HP racing muffler
http://www.car-sound.com/catalog/universal/500.aspx
This is the cat
http://www.hpracing.com/parts_detail_disp.php?part_no=50-M18&id=41&
this muffler to be exact.
Now the gains are great, but it's loud now...too loud. At idle, it's okay, but on acceleration it's just too loud (that civic blaring volume), and at WOT, it just blares.
At this point, what are my options to make it quiet. I wouldn't mind taking a minor loss in power so long it's at least more than what it was before the header. but my main concern now is to get the noise down.
what are my options?
Add resonator? Add another cat? change current cat? change muffler?
What are losses with each option?
Your input is greatly appreciated

add a resonator.
what can i expect in terms of noise reduction and performance loss.
Oh, i forgot to state, it's a 97 KA

I have had a dc sports header on for just over a year now. And its really loud dc-test pipe-2.inch no restriction exhaust-hks hi power. Right now without the baffle (silencer) at 50ft away im 104.2 dbs. Im hoping with the baffle to lower it a good 6-8 dbs but i dunno. Straight through resonator is my next option cut some exhaust away and weld one right in. I would reccommend the same.

go buy a huge(largest one you can fit) cherry bomb muffler. Its basically just a huge resonator, and cheap as hell.
Measure the longest strait section in your exhaust, buy that size resonator, weld in, and be done.... if you dont like the outcome, it only cost you 30 bucks.

are you suggesting a muffler and a resonator?
or just one or the other?

Your exhaust should go Header-->Cat-->Resonator-->Muffler-->Tip

i would say your best option is get a new muffler because the one in the link looks disgusting
then get/make a silencer for it

Definitely add a resonator... and like someone else... ditch the muffler, it's quiet hideous and certainly doesn't go with a kouki body style...
Either a plain old exmag looking muffler or the usual N1 style with silencer... I hear the MR N1 muffler with silencer is pretty good and only like 89$ off ebay (that is the carbon fiber/burnt tip N1 though), the regular one is cheaper...

try wrapping the header and the exhaust. might help reduce tinny vibration. and add a resonator
add a resonator and a silencer
fuck silcencers make your car sound like an angry bee or a really loud kazoo.
resonater is the way to go

my exhaust goes like this very soon
header > test pipe > muffler/tip

yea mines is almost like that
hotshot = cat = no resonator = sport muffler

so you have to get rid of your stock cat to run the DC sport header?

he asked about poweer and perfromance...i dunno about much power i got.
dc header -> dummy cat ->stock exhasut with basically nothign in the muffler. maybe the stock exhasut is my problem.
My car isnt louid but its sligthly deep.
anyone wanan buy my DC Header? PM me
Your exhaust should go Header-->Cat-->Resonator-->Muffler-->Tip
this is pretty much right, and should give your car a fairly normal, non buzzy tone. if you want a lower sound, get a longer/bigger resonator.
My exhaust, however, goes like this
Manifold-->HUGE LEAK-->cat from a fox body mustang-->lots of holes-->i lost the resonator :(--->n1 style ricer can that was found at a body shop
how many people had a stock resonator?
when i removed my exhaust i didnt have one yet all my friends did =\

I had a stock resonator.. and when I had my custom exhaust done, I had them install a new one for larger diameter piping.

yeah, just install a resonator, and ditch the silencer, they look like crap and sound even worse.

your profile says you own a 97 s14 and to let you know, when you replaced the headers, you took off the stock cat. the "cat" under the car that connects the downpipe and catback is a hollow dummy cat. that would explain why your car is so loud, because you have no cat at all. go get a cat welded in place of the dummy or buy a catco one or something.
people above mentioned it, but i thought i would clear it up a bit for you

another +1 for a resonator
silencers are just stupid IMO.

well i dynomatted my trunk when i had a 3" RSR dp-->catco 3" cat---->3" eatback GTII with no silencer and that made it bearible

that keeps the in-car dbs down, but won't keep the po-po off your back

If its too loud for you, put the stock one back on.
