california smog question

i bought a car from someone that was registered non operable. i am gonna keep it non operable as well while i work on it, but do i need to smog it for the title transfer or only when i register it to drive on the street? also i noticed that for this year he required a test only center, when i smog it to drive on the street later do i have to get it done at a smog only station?

You can register your car later, but you're susposed to notify the DMV within 10 days.. I waited almost a full year.. haha and had to pay ~$100 in fees.

If your car has been tagged a test only, it will need to go to a test only or ref regardless of how long you wait.
