just wondering what you guys are using and did it hold??? i did my oil pan recntly like prolly 2 weeks ago and because of my pcv stuck closed and all the blowby from my 215k motor it was seapping out a couple a days after i did the job.(USE OEM NISSAN PCV TO PREVENT OIL LEAKS EVERYONE) I have a gasket for the pan (yes and actually gasket i think from fram) that i was going to put on but did not bring it to my shop BUT i did end up using what was near by which was Subaru 3 bond sealant(Pink Stuff). It did the job but that didnt hold all the crankcase pressure. Any hoo do you guys just use rtv and which kind or combo with gasket or what>?>>

BTW i had one helluva time doing the oilpan by myself 3 hours before my final at school. Had the car on my lift, unbolted motor mount bolts, and lifted up by the bellhousing high enough to clear.Unbolted mating plates on both sides. Unbolted the pan and i had to unbolt the sump just to get the damn thing off. Putting it on was even tricker since i guess i couldnt raise it high enough for the pan to clear the sump and not mess up the sealant (which i did several times).Somewhere i read it takes only 20 minutes. Hahhahahaha my ass. I had a lift and all my air tools and the shit still took a long ass time. Well looks like i might be doing it again, this time with no lift. Worst part is scrapping all the shit off and cleaning both mating surfaces to get them all nice and clean.

It's not a 3hour job for sure. With the crossmember loose and the pickup removed the pan drops right out from underneath.

As far as sealant, I've never used anything but RTV and never had an issue. There's no way a stuck PCV would cause enough pressure to blow oil out the pan seal unless you've plugged the crankcase vent and you're running extremely high oil pressure. Sounds like it wasn't a clean seal in the first place.

If you read that its a quick job maybe that was for an SR. My brother did his pretty quick. But on the KA you have to loosen the crossmember and all sorts of fun stuff as you now know.
The high temp copper RTV stuff is what I used and its been fine. Do you have to use RTV when you use an aftermarket gasket?

well it being 3 hours with some issues, but it would have been prolly less if i didnt lollygag and have trouble getting the transmission jack back. But all i did was unbolt my sway bar, drop that, then the engine mount bolts and raise the engine up. But yeah the previous pcv was crudded up. Yes pcv valves is gunked up can cause enough pressure to start an oil leak. In my case all the blowby is whats keeping it going. Maybe i should have used rtv.

It sure was hell when I did mine! I kept droping the oil sump bolt inside of the oil pan when trying to bolt it back up. But if you cheat and just raise up the engine by the bell housing you may get the oil pan out but putting RTV on it and sliding in back in there you will probably scrap most of it off. I went and bought a Felpro gasket and lightly coated the gasket with a very thin layer of RTV and I used a couple of zip ties to keep the gasket from sliding off as I installed it then just cut off the zip ties before I screwed it up. 4 months later no leaks at all!!
