View Full Version : Lets get things started
ok heres the deal, my car wont start. its not that it wont start at all, but only if its cool or hasnt been sitting in the sun all day (ie: it will start in the morning but not if i, say, go to the mall and leave it in this sweltering heat)
my first guess was that its the battery, but it cant be that because i can sit in the car and listen to the radio. then i began to think a little harder (mind you this was hard b/c of the heat) and now i think maybe there is somthing wrong with the starter. or at least a short in the wires leading to/from the starter, im really not that sure.
thanks for any help

go 2 autozone and hab them recharger ur battery..it's free.....then check ur coolent....also maybe it's time 4 new spark plugs....
a battery can recharge over time....maybe over night and when u use it it doesnt recharge full or not excepting current(bad battery)...could be the alternator...but check the battery first! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

The times when it does not start, does it turn over, almost start and then die quickly, or does it not even turn over?
There's a temperature sensor that decides whether to cold start the motor or hot start the motor. When it cold starts it but the engine is already warmed up, it will flood it with too much fuel.
when i turn the key nothing happens at all... like i said before i dont think it could be the battery because if it was bad i wouldnt be able to listen to the radio, turn on my lights, etc...

Your starter might be stuck in a bad spot internally. I used to carry my hockey sticks in the car because it was the easiest way to hit it. Just bash it with a stick, hit it a couple of times and try to start it. Sometimes starter motors get a bad spot in the field windings. If that works get your starter rebuilt.
ok.. but where exactly is the starter?
JpS...I know EXACTLY what the problem is. Reach under your dash panel by the clutch pedal and press the "clutch switch" in with your finger and try to start it up. $10 says it'll fire right up. This same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago and I got all scared. There is a rubber plug in a bracket attached to the clutch pedal...that plug feel out so it wasn't pressing the clutch switch in, thus not allowing my car to start...it literally sounded like I didn't have the clutch all the way in...NOTHING HAPPENED when I tried to crank it.
So check that switch bro...I'm guessing that's your prob.

well... it looks like you owe me $10

but youre right... its like i dont have the clutch pushed in all the way when i turn the key to crank it..

i have seen other cars have this problem after being driven....the starter would get hot and would not crank the car until it cooled off. the starter was changed both times and fixed the problem. just something to think about and
well.. now its changed.. now it wont start at all.. so i went out and bought a starter, read the faq on 240sx.org, and figured i'd take care of it... but i cant break the bolts to get the starter out... so im not too sure what im gonna do as of yet
thanks guys

Starter is located on the left hand side of the block towards the bottom, sits right under the oil filter. It looks like a oblong cylinder with a little box attached to it (this is the starter solenoid).
Duffmans suggestion was good. You can try hammering it with a rubber mallet to see if it is a problem with the teeth. Otherwise, your starter solenoid could be fried, which in that case, you will have to replace the whole starter cuz no one sells the solenoid separate.

Get yourself a breaker bar or just get a piece of pipe and fit it over your socket rachet for more torque.
Hope it helps!

thats really odd...deffinetly hit it with a mallet...then just buy a new starter...they only cost about $100 with core (I got quoted). Go to Autozone and buy a $12 breaker bar and break those bolts off...my $12 breaker bar has done WONDERS for me...I cant even describe to you.

yesh, get a breaker bar, and hit things with a mallet. Then mebbe try some explosives. Or you could drive it off a cliff. OOOooooh, sing it a song. . . Shit, I'm bored.
