ok, i searched around, havent found an answer but heres the story:

private seller is selling a rolling chassis w/o motor in it. he picked it up from junkyard, has all original VINs and paperwork, but he said it doesnt have a title sinc eits been in the yard too long.

my question is, if i buy it, and work on it, drop engine in, etc, how do i go about getting a title? would it be salvaged title? car does have frame damage, so i thought it would be a salvaged title. but not sure.

i wasnt planning on swapping in a legal motor but i do have a place i can get it smogged at, so it should be all gravy right? I just dont want to get a chassis with damage and find out it cant be given a title or has to be inspected by designated place which i cant pay under the table to pass smog.

anyone have any answer?

depends on your state law

start with cali DMV

first find info on getting the legit title.

there are more hoops you're going to have to jump through. its probably going to be a junk title (not salvage) because it came out of a junkyard.

Yikes did you read the CHP inspection? You will need to have a ligit and smoggable engine in first!

my friend saw a pretty clean chasis at a junkyard. i think it had no interior or something.. anyways he asked if they would sell him the shell but the junkyard ppl said they cant sell it to him b/c its junked or something..

ouch. damn, i wanted to make this a track car but i still wanted to the option to drive it on the streets and get a title. guess i need an actual salvage title car then. =(
oh well, thanks for the help everyone, better find out now than buy it and find out too late.
