Hi there,

I would like to know how do people determined whether an S14 sr20det is a kouki model or zenki ?

The reason I am asking is that I am getting a S14 motor set, and the shop is telling me that it's a kouki with less miliage. So, I check the ECU, it's coded "NA" which is a kouki ECU. But how can I know if I am just looking at the block and head or maybe the harness ?

Please help.

The motors are the same. it shouldn't really matter, who cares if your motor is 1 or 2 years older since it's already almost 10 years old anyways. I would care more about the condition of the motor, ie does it run, good compression, good leakdown, working/complete accessories, good turbo, etc.

Regaurdless, if the SR is anything like the KA (not sure, i'm a KA guy), the kouki ecu was pinned slightly differently from the zenki ecu. Chances are if it has a kouki ecu, its a kouki motor...Not many people that would take the time to repin their harness connector to accept a newer ecu when older ones are much easier to find.

I hope they're not charging you extra for a kouki motor though...that would be kinda shitty if they did...

The connector for the ecu is different...forgot what it looks like though. Some kouki engines come w/ ball bearing t28 Zenki does not. I know there is a thread on this forum explaining all the differences.

few pin changes.
i have NA ecu i have a 'kouki' motor
it was in a clip
end sup its a chuuki ye there is a weird gen of s14 motors, which mine is (made for a few months) found out when wiring in the SAFC

anyways NA should be kouki
if not, no worries. the changes if any are so minimal u wont even realize it.

kouki also has a ribbed front cover on the head.

on the head the kouki has cooling fins. The zenki does not.
wc=zenki color that "wc" is written on ecu red-early model black-later model
na=kouki

s14 sr20det ftw, so glad i swapped one into my s13. Love it compared to the redtops.

and on the maf connector the kouki has kind of a hump connector, while the s14 early model zenki has the same exact plug as the s13 sr20's.

Night and day difference in stock form between S13 and S14 SRs. Had the latter in my first hatch and now my blacktop feels rather anemic.

According to the S14 FSM, there is no difference in pinouts of the ECU and ECCS connection among all of the S14 Sr20det. Can somebody confirm that ?

Thanks.

i believe they are different..

also... another way to tell if its a kouki or zenki s14sr is by looking at the front on the SR.. I believe the kouki models have some cooling fins

Found this back when I was thinking of doing the repinning.

turbo could be the big contributor to that.

turbo could be the big contributor to that.

as well as VTC... ads the low end torque that s13 sr's lack in

this guy knows what hes talking about. i have the kouki s14 motor. it has "fins" or "ridges" on the front side of the head, just under the valve cover. on zenki motors, its smooth. theres no fins or ridges there. thats how you can tell. both s14 motors (and s15) have the slant on the rear of the valve cover. If you get a kouki s14, thats dope, less mileage and its kouki!
