hey i have a stock ka24de and where is a good rpm to shift. i was thinking since the peak hp is 5600 iirc, maybe 6k would be a good area. but still that seems a little low. just wonderinghow high u guys are taking your motors.

I havn't taken it up that high yet. I just swapped in my 5speed and 6 puck clutch so i still need to break it in, but I imagine I'll be shifting around 7k or so. (auto ecu)
On my sohc i used to short shift it around 5800.

Question: when ur in gear, is the car putting fuel into the engine?
the pops told me that to save gas, leave it in gear since when ur in neutral, it uses gas to keep the motor running, where as when its in gear, the momentum keeps the engine turning....

If your foot is off the throttle then no, it is not consuming fuel persay.
If you leave it in gear and take your foot of the throttle, it's called engine braking. You're slowing yourself down, and decreasing the forward momentum of the car.
The most fuel economical thing to do would be to get up to speed, put it in neutral and let it coast.
Um events at events i bounce it off revlimiter in 2nd
Drag racing 6k anything beyond that you're just pushing air, affective power band ends at 5600.
Daily driving 4000 (i just got a ticket for vibrating some cop in her SUV with my exhaust)
I'm getting cam sprockets soon to see what I can do wtih the power band with stock cams.

well your pops is pretty much right.
except if you engine brake, you lose speed... so it's better to just coast in traffic, unless you're coming up to a light or stop sign.

6500rpm
why shift earlier? sure it isnt making that much more power past 6k but when you do shift its further up the powerband in the next gear
and dudes. I have to shift at like 1050rpm if a cop is behind me. buddy club, test pipe, header, intake = death blow

this is true, and why i shift around 7k-7.2k..atleast in 2nd so i can land in the powerband in 3rd
yeah 6500 is a better statement. I wasn't thinking fully when i said 6 :P lol
anyone else notice 3rd gear sucks?!
I normally short shift 3rd because forth has a better pull.

The most fuel economical thing to do would be to get up to speed, put it in neutral and let it coast.
When you are in 5th gear and coasting down, the ECU is dumping NO fuel into the engine. When you're in neutral and coasting down, the ECU is dumping enough fuel for the engine to idle.
Drag racing 6k anything beyond that you're just pushing air, affective power band ends at 5600.
This is ignoring the benefits of gearing. I've stuck my torque and hp numbers into a spreadsheet and you will accelerate the fastest if you redline the car in every gear, including 4th gear.

Your shift point should be at about 6000RPM. A stock KA even with a crap load of bolt ons begins to lose power at about 5600RPM.
Unless you knife edge the crank and drop some weight from it don't expect for it to be to rev happy.
I'm saying this from experience since I am a KA guy.
Dyno graphs of KA's representing the power band.

The problem with the ka is that it gets thrashy at 6k or above, I always shift at peak torque, I know its not going fastest, but it just feels right with the car. I am always let down when I redline the car, so I keep away from the revs.
What i've noticed and my friend (we both have the same things done bolt on wise)
With Intake, Header, Full exhaust. You'll notice the KA really starts to kick at 4000 rpms.
So when I shift I like to try and hit 4k
Daily I shift at 45k and for race day I shift at 6k
