help on this newbie type quetion plz

its a simple as thing but ive had different people tell me different things
when do i check my oil level hot or cold engine?
believe me i got like 5 ppl say hot n another 5 say cold
i am like wtf now at this point so i can here for help

cold, if you check it hot the oil expands...and isn't a true reading of how much oil is in your car...now, auto tranny fluid...at running temp.
