View Full Version : Too much cooling

I was debating on whether to get a cooling panel or taurus electric fans. This is going on a basically stock sohc (intake, will be getting a header, 2.5" exhaust). I know the taurus fans SUCK/BLOW (literally), but would it be too much, thus hindering performance vs. just a cooling panel?
This is one of those preventative manitanence things.

You shouldn't have any problems with a good fans. A couple of things you do want to keep in mind though. It is best to use a thermoswitch to activate the fan rather than have it on all the time, but that's your call. Most folks have no problems with the fan running on low with ignition power, and switching to high as needed.
You also want to consider highway use. A fan that's running on high at highway speeds may actually undercool the radiator because it creates too much resistance. Air just goes around the radiator instead of through it.
So it's really important to get your wiring done right.

So I would be alright with the taurus fans + cooling panel?
And as far as undercooling, wouldnt these fans be mounted closest to the engine? So how would air just go around it from the fan?

I have been running a zirgo 14" 2200cfm I think, anyway point is here in florida it's hot all the time, and can't really over cool unless you are like me with no thermostat or thermoswitch, then on cool days I overcool and can't use my heater unless the fan is off. I know people who used the taurus fans on mud truck's(off fuckin' roadin' like buncha damn rednecksnshit)with 460 ford motor and keep that bad boy super cool.
go with a real part the fan will be better than the panel, but the panel you can make for like ten $ in 20 minutes or an old piece of carboard in less time, but YES they do work but if you want some real cooling run 4" dryer hose from front vent to exhuast manifold.
Very good trick. I could see my factory temp. gauge drop at 40mph

unless air is directed by say the shroud it won't go through the fan just pass around because at highway speed the air flow is more than any fan

also with that pignose you can vent that piece like mine was, can't see too good but, also you can see my cheap cooling panel on like page 4

That, I understand, but he made it sound like the air from the fan wouldnt go through the radiator. lol

I always wondered about those slits, but they go through the bumper support and styrofoam right?

Air doesn't go through the radiator because the fan is turning too slowly as compared to air speed when you're on the freeway. The fan, even though it's turning, creates a high pressure area directly behind the radiator. Air is lazy, and takes the path of least resistance. It wants to go away from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
At highway speeds, you actually get better cooling with no fan at all.

Ok, so I want a high/low switch/wiring and I would want it on low for highway speeds?
And would I be ok with just a cooling panel then? Or better off with both?

up to you,I feel the fan is best. Helping the air go to where needed is also important, you can't make a fan but, the panel you can. Look at mine on that link tell me it doesn't look easy. Also, the vent's don't go through the support/impact foam, it is slightly higher and will get you more flow, helped me prolong putting in new headgasket.

Ok, cool. I just didn't want to have negative effects by having both of them.

I had none and if you do get the cooling panel or MAKE one then those vents werk better for more cool incoming air

I'll definitely look into it.

....yea but wouldnt that cause your manifold to be prone to cracking? with such extreme temp changes i could see it crackin the shit out of the manifold when running hard, esp on a turboed car. besides, that 4" hose seems much happier going to the brakes! haha
