Could the stock SMIC withstand track days without getting heatsoaked?
I need to find a solution to my "overheating" after 10 minutes... As long as it does not overheat before 20 minutes with a T28, it would be swell.. Of course, I'm talking about a SR20DET.

If you run only 7 psi you should be fine. If the weather is cold enough you can even run more.
On my T25g I ran 13psi on a cold night and after driving hard my ic was still as cold as ice. It really depends on the conditions.

Ran all day at Streets of Willow at 7.5psi with no problems!
Other than that, might want a better SMIC.
Yeah I'm thinking of getting rid of the FMIC... it blocks all air to the rad and the car starts overheating after 10 minutes on track events. I'm sure that with some water spraying, the SMIC could withstand much more....

you may be able to retrofit aftermarket SMICs for Z32s

is ARC the only one that makes aftermarket SMICs?
I saw a Blitz unit on ebay too!

actually you should check out splparts. Kuah has quite a list of SMIC's he sells. ARC has the biggest dimensions, though
EDIT: he only lists two that he sells, but lists the dimensions of the competitors
I haven't seen anything on their website, might have to send him an email.

there you go, man. You should still ask if you can retrofit for use in an S13 though.
Have you thought of a V-Mount application?
I thought about it, but it requires way too much custom fabrication, cutting, etc... I don't want to do that to the convertible... Hell, I'd swap a VQ35DE instead of doing that. ;)

what about routing the fmic to behind the rad?
what about routing the fmic to behind the rad?
Wouldn't that create another problem: FMIC not cooling the air properly?

What are the dimensions of the stock side mount compared to a s15 sidemount? I'm sure an s15 sidemount or an aftermarket replacement will suffice. An s15 sidemount shouldn't heatsoak in 20min. unless your running over 300hp and/or it's really hot out.

s15 sidemounts are much beefier... Mr.Mephistopheles had a writeup a while back

your doing autox right? I just dont see overheating at any open track day unless there is some other problem, that or your going slow and high revs (autox). I dunno, neither my oil or coolant ever go over 110C even after like 10 laps.

i think the s15 smic's are about 1cm thicker. would that even make a diff?
EchoOfSilence

it's more than that, IIRC. the endtanks are a different design too

Here's the important snippet:
Here are some comparison pics:

As you can see, the surface area of the core is the same, while it's about 10mm thicker. I didn't get a thickness measurement, but it can easily be obtained at a later time. edit: should be S13 = 5cm, S15 = 6cm.
The thickness will make a difference. That 1cm is a 20% increase in volume right there. The end tanks seem over-widened compared to the S13 cooler to take advantage of the greater volume.

Street: never overheats
Auto-X: never overheats
Track/Lapping: Overheats after 10 minutes of hard driving
I don't have an oil cooler: could that fix the problem?
I have a FMIC that fills up by S13 front end opening in front of the radiator.
S15 / ARC SMICs are VERY interesting... I just want to be sure that's gonna solve my problem.

hell YES an oil cooler will help.

yes s15/ARC smic's do sound interesting as well, but where the hell can we find some?!?!?!

Yeah I'm pretty sure it'll get heat soaked. It all depends on how much power your making.

as for the getting heatsoaked: at 250whp, i doubt it.

My friend has a GTI 1.8t with a chip and tbe, and he heatsoakes his side mount all the time. Hes probably has 30 or 40 less hp and probably the same intercooler size. It just depends on a variety of things. How long you run the car at full throttle as well as whether your running the turbo in it's efficiency range. If your around stock boost I wouldn't worry about it either. Your running 550 injectors right? TBE, intake and a tune? How much boost are your running out of curiosity?

How come everyone with an sr with this question has no idea that it is their OIl temp that creates this problem.
If the cooling system has an adiquate size fan, and a good thermostat.

blu808, would upgrading the thermostat be necessary?

I've never had this problem on an sr..
OIL cooler is a big +
Also, you said you are running a smaller t25, but a BIG Front mount, maybe get a shorter front mount that hooks into you're piping, to let air pass to the radiator.
I have good pricing on PWR intercoolers and radiators. Not as cheap as the ebay xs power, or koyo.. but WAAAY better quality. Better as in No 1 Ic/RAD for import drag and V8SuperCar (http://www.v8supercar.com)!
Send me a p/m if interested.

i have a blitz upgraded smic with a 5-zigen cold pipe and an hks hotpipe w/ bov. I have a redtop s13 sr with a 1.2 greddy head gasket, greddy intake manifold, stock exhaust manifold with rebuilt stock turbo, HKS evc2 boost controller, stock computer, stock injectors, 85mm turbo back with test pipe, hks super mega flow intake, stock radiator, and stock fan with shroud. I ran on streets of willow this last friday. The air temp for the day was averaging 78 degrees. I ran 13.8 psi of boost all day long without any overheating problems or heatsoak on the smic. My smic got slightly hot when i did a 3 lap time attack of 17.2 psi. upgrading the sidemount is great but not nearly as great as a fmic. I kept the smic setup to be sleeper in the cops eyes. I have almost 275 hp @ 16.5 psi :P
