so everyone knows JDM stuff is cool.. and its allot better than the crapola we get here. but is it worth the extra bucks just to go JDM rather than upgrade with USDM aftermarket parts?
what parts on a Jspec S13 are cheaper and better than aftermarket parts ?
example.. are JDM brakes better than upgrading our brakes w/ some brembos?

a: USDM is sometimes better, i.e. 155hp 2.4L vs 140hp 2.0L in the S-chassis (S13 vs S14) or the 2.0L Altezza vs. it's 3.0L I6 USDM version, the IS300.
b: Generally, the trend is JDM aftermarket.
Final thoughts: whatever works best. Oddly enough, some of the best stuff for the S13 and S14 are Australian made.

IMHO, this is too much an opinion issue for many of us.
I look for the best value - performance to price. If it is JDM, so be it. If it is USDM, so be it. ADM. Etc.
Brembo, for example, is a universal manufacturer of two things - brakes and rotors. Yes, they make $2K kits that are for racing applications and they make rotors which are high quality and (should be) cheaper than OEM replacements. What is a JDM equivolent? Sure there are a few companies that make better racing brakes, but why if you are really racing and you need US support?
I find plenty of US suppliers for brake pads. I would never use JDM at 150% of the price and 75% of the quality. But after that, what parts for the 240 are made in the USA? Sway bars - I'd go ADM. Suspension - for the s14, it's JDM or ProKits. Basically, I get what ever works that is the cheapest from where ever it comes from.
When we have companies like AEM, CompTech, and TrueChoice making things for the 240, I will be right there with them (provided I can't get as good or better stuff from Japan for less).

if you have an opinion, express it as your own opinion, not everyones.
I personally don't think JDM is better. As hippo said, it's performance vs money. Thus if i can get something made in US that has same quality as japanese and costs less (and it prolly will when you add in the shipping), id be buying it w/o thinking twice. However, some things you can't find in US (like SRDET engine) or things that will cost cheaper in Japan (junk yard parts). But then you gotta think if you really need/want it (ex: alternative to SRDET is a KADET... i'm not gonna go on with that).

On average I would say that most Japan based companies have better quality...but there are some great companies here in the US as well.
XS Engineering makes a great turbo kit for the KA and like japan turbo kits for the SR, it's expensive. Usually you do pay for what you get. There are companies that actually test products and have race proven vehicles. These are the companies that spend a lot of RnD dollars to create a great product.
If there is a similar product in the US that can be substituted then by all means go for it. But in general most of the major US performace companies have been slow to target the import market. Finally Edelbrock, Hooker and other quality mainstream US companies have started making parts for imports.
Sadly the majority of companies out there in the US are just there to make a quick buck. They copy Japanese tuner products using cheaper materials and manufaturing to cut costs. Examples, Tenzo R, OBX, Konig, Ichiban, and the list goes on.
Bottom line is no matter US or Japan based tuner you get what you pay for. There is no cheap way to really get performance.

that's what i was thinking, wherezmytofu. the only thing that we 240sx owners buy that is JDM are engines, bumpers/sideskirts, and lights. well, that's what i can think of at the moment.
