My a/c blows but doesn't cool. The technician said there was no freon leak in the system they found. He said He wouldn't be sure what it was until he got in there and started ripping things out at $59.99/hr. He said it could take 2 hours to do this. and If it was the compressor it would be another $700.
Now for my question. Does anyone have an opinion on what it could be. He filled it up with freon but said it doesn't circulate through the system. If it is the compressor does anyone know where I can get a cheaper compressor?
Thanks for the input...Dave

Cheaper compressors can be had at parts stores, like AutoZone usually. I don't see our cars as rare enough to not have them. Anyway, they will be rebuilt, probably have a longer warranty than the new one, and cheaper.
And there are only a few main parts of an A/C setup... Compressor, Condenser, and Evap Canister. The first 2 are prone to problems, and the last one will have to be replaced as soon as you or your mechanic open the closed ac circuit.

Yeah as you can tell I searched and came up with this thread. So anyway, I've heard that rebuilt compressors will fail in about a year (told to me by an ac specialist).. Is there a difference between rebuilt and remanufactured quality wise? if there is a difference in then I'll get the remanned, if not, I guess i'll buy a brand new one, so in other words rebuilt is out of the question, I just wanted to know if reman. and rebuilt is the same thing..
thanks

Rebuilt, is someone like you selling it, wether it be rebuilt or remanned.
Reman, is a company with knowledge of said product, usually will include some sort of warranty.
That's how i see it, oh ok
Take calipers, if you do it, it's a rebuild, Autozone Advance blah blah, Remanned.
You might go as far as checking out the re-manufacturer.

by the way, anybody have or know how to make an a/c bracket to fit a sohc ac compressor to sr? i want to buy one.
cotbu, what you said was interesting, but i see stores that sell rebuilt and/or remanned compressors from manufacturers, so i guess rebuilt doesnt mean what I think you thought it meant.

Even a new OEM compressor is remanned, so there's not much benefit in spending the extra money with them, especially since a lot of places offer a lifetime warranty. Go pick one up at any AutoZone.

BE sure to change the expansion valve too!!!
Get your compressor at any mayor auto parts store. They usually offer lifetime warranty and some even offer installation.
Good time to replace that expensive R12 and refit your system to the new R134a.
Will not cool as well as before, but will be cheaper.
Beware, R134 runs at a higher pressure than R12. Any part on your AC that is marginally good will eventually fail, so evaluate your options and cost before changing gasses.

I just talked to my ac guy, and he said that rebuilt and remanufactured is the same thing, just different terminology.. He also said that 10/10 of those compressors will fail in about a year or less and its mostly always the same part, the front seal that busts. So pretty much getting rebuilt or reman. is obsolete, you'll have to continually replace it, while getting brand new will last you another 10-15 years.
