*** Edit *** turns out there IS a faint clicking sound coming from my motor. The noise isnt loud enough to be heard from inside the cabin but can be heard w/the hood open :(.

Hey all.

I was recently out practicing my launch for the track.

Mods:
96 S14
S13 Redtop (no ras)
Basic upgrades (exhaust fmic, etc), stock injectors, walbro 255lph fuel pump.

All was going well, but on my last run i missed 2nd gear and saw (to my horror) my rpm's rise to 8k. When the RPM's got up there I heard a grinding noise that went away after they dropped back down.

Wanting to know if something was broken, i decided to do a 3rd gear pull @ 1bar to listen for any noises/performance issues and the car pulled fine :tweak: I also didnt hear any noises.

I dont think I blew a rocker arm because the car idle's fine and the grinding noise hasn't been back.

Any Idea what that grinding noise was that I heard at around 8k on my miss-shift??

Thanks in advance.

Maybe your gear? Where you still trying to get second to engage?

See, thats where I am also confused . . .

I let off the gas and stopped trying to force the car into gear when i new i missed the shift.

its probably your gears.....lol did you push in the clutch after you relized that you misshifted? i wouldnt worry about it if the sound doesnt come back...try driving around shifting through all the gears and seeing if it grinds... it was probably just a quick grind

^ sound advice.

I dont think the clutch was in, but i cant remember 100%. I just remember thinking it was an engine noise.

Thanks

Allright . . . since i didnt hear a noise from inside the cabin i figured everything was ok . . . . but i decided to pop the hood and rev the motor anyways.

Turns out there is a very faint clicking sound coming from my engine . . . :( Im guessing that this is a busted rocker arm or one that has shifted out of place.

Could it be anything else since the car drives fine?

Pull the VC and make sure. If the rocker/shims pop off and bounce around the head its not good. Been there, done that. Bent valves and everything.

check your gaskets...could be a blown exhaust gasket, turbo gasket, etc....

Yeah i gotta pull the vc and have it checked out . . .

This is a weird problem . . . the motor seems to function just as well as it did before this happened. I really gotta get this figured out before going to the track and exploding something.

Hopefully it doesnt get worse from me driving.

You sure that clicking sound isn't coming from the injectors?

You could have bent a valve already and not know it. Clicking noise could be the bent valve sticking.
