Can someone help me out on this, I have a s-13 sr(redtop) in a 97 240. My motor came with an automatic ecu which I suspect someone switched out somewhere between the junkyard and the shop I got it from. I also have a 5 speed s14 speed sensor hooked up. My speedo is dead. I think it is the auto ecu not properly reading the 5 speed speed sensor but im not sure. Can anyone help me out. Thanks

your speed sensor sends the signal to your gauge cluster and from your gauge cluster it goes to the ecu, not to the ecu first. Did you cut your speed sensor wires at anytime and reconnect them? If you got the wires switched, your gauge cluster will not read the speed sensor.

Sounds like speedometer is dead. Swap with a known-good.

Yea, I would check my speedo first, Mine crapped out, not the same problem, but an easy thing to change

Since the VSS runs straight to the speedometer, then to the ECU, an inaccurate speed reading means either your VSS and/or its wiring are bad, or the speedo itself is bad.
You won't know if the ECU is bad by looking at the speedo because the ECU doesn't give any inputs to the speedo.

Are you talking about the whole gauge cluster? Or is there something smaller to change for just the speedo?

I believe the actual speedometer part just unscrews out with like 2 or 3 small screws.
