i want to swap out the auto in my 240. its a stock 91 base model, no abs, or power anything. my parents are the kind that are overcontrolling kind that wont let me spend my own money w.o their ok.
so b4 i undergo this endevor i was wondering if any of you could bring some good arguments to the table. like why it is worth it, or why it isnt unreasonable.
also any problems that anyone has encountered in doing the swap.
i searchd a lil finding some problems that ppl have encountered but i'm also looking 4 reasoning....the 1st thing i address in this post.
thanx
evan
Its more fuel economical.
They tend to last longer than automatic tranmssions (although the 240sx AT is pretty strong).
The ladies love stick.

Gnnr brings three good points, but why do it, I did it becasue ive never seen an auto sr, and yah they are fun but at least for me it gets annoying, I have a daily that is an auto and stick is cool to drive sometimes. I say save the money (usually around 400 or so to do it) and wait till either your tranny dies, or you decide to upgrade an engine or something. or go crazy with the current engine. just my 2 cents.

There are several auto SRs.
And its worth it to just sell the auto and look for a manual since its a 91 base.

if the legend is true, KA transmissions can hold up to 400hp without rebuild

5spd is a must have. No other reason.

Drivers drive stick, period.
Grocery getters, show cars, and 1/4 milers are auto. You CANNOT fully appreciate the driving experience with auto. If you wanted auto, you shouldn't have bought a sport car or sports coupe. An automatic transmission in a 'sports' car is an oxymoron. A contradiction.
These arguments won't hold with your parents, but they are good reasons never the less. Remind them that they were once young and not arthritic. Get them to reminisce about the good ole days and perhaps they will be more sympathetic.
Tell them you are trying to help your car with it's identity crisis as well as improve your driving skillz. More attentive drivers are safe drivers. Stick requires more user input, therefore more alertness. Sell the safety angle- parents eat that stuff up... unless they don't like you. In which case tell them you will crash and burn for sure. It'll be a done deal.

Everyone has a good point. Driving a stick while your still young is the best feeling. As you get older, you'll probably want a luxary car thats automatic such as a bmw. Do what you want, not what others want for you.

I tried that. My dad said drugs were cheaper and probably less dangerous then a high HP performance car in the hands of a 15 year old.

ya the safety angle is a very good one to work on my parents. they think i dont pay enough attention as it is so...

wow would they ever. get this they cought me n my friend mary jane, well her left overs anyways, and were stone cold convinced i was doin coke n pills n prob everything else. i wanted 2 punch them all in the face. so the off drugs is a good card to play

hahaha:bowrofl: my dad would def not say that. hes not a big fan, and never was a user...he just doesnt understand

every manual that i find has crazy probs with it. like no motor, blown motor, crazy body wrk needed, etc..
annother reason why my parents, well the only reason my mom is hesitant, is she doesnt want it to not work, and me be without a car. my dad....hes just a screwbag who doesnt get me. "it wont increase the value of the car" "why break this one when you can just drive it, take care of it, and sell it down the road and get a newer better car" umm..... fuck that. i wouldnt sell it....unless the price is right, it would just become a project car. he doesnt see or understand that.

Swapping an engine is easier than swapping from auto to manual.

Yea but if you have an automatic car to begin with and your doing an engine swap you still need to get a slave sylinder, release bearing, etc.

That's why I'm saying, buy a manual with a fucked up engine instead of an auto and swapping the tranny over.
Engine swaps are cake.

this is true... i swapped my coupe to manual and it was more expensive than i thought... i only did that coz it was hard finding a 5speed coupe...

I paid about 100 bux for everything, and also yes swapping an engine was easy, but AT/MT was 10 times easier, its like no brainer. damn.

Anytime man... anytime. ;)
I've done both.. I think its much easier to swap engines..
swapping the pedals was a pain, cutting the hole was a pain... the wiring was a pain..
Swapping engines is just unbolt and rebolt.

All you need to do is just buy the tranny. Once you bought it, what can they say except wtf. Its a done deal.

It is easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask persmission. True... True...
They can't bludgeon you to death for it, it's illegal.
The ease of the swaps is somewhat equipment dependant. But for someone who does most work outside in the driveway and elements... I'd prefer to pull an engine than do even a clutch job, because I don't have to crawl on the ground for the engine. I can reach all the top bolts on the bellhousing from up top (egr delete) and can reach the bottom bolts from the sides.
Trying to maneuver the tranny into place while underneath the car ranks as my least favorite job to date. Still not THAT bad though. It wouldn't prevent me from doing another swap.

I never said I can do it with my eyes closed I said it was easier than an engine swap. 100 didnt include the transmisison (because I already had the tranny) but trannies are about 130. and sure i got hung up on some engine things and it was a learning experience but in the long run it is easy, just like the tranny swap. you simply have to get some different pieces, the hardest part would be drilling for the CMC but other than that, its just buying parts and fitting them in basically.

Pedals were harder than the CMC.. that is, if you did swap them out.
I cut them at first but wasn't pleased with the jankyness...

I have ways i.e. pretty much mastered cutting the clutch hole and trimming down the auto brake pedal to the point that it fits a the stock manual brake pedal pad cover.Nothing janky in fact people are hard pressed to tell the autos I have swapped were even autos.

you can always force a tranny swap....like blowing your auto tranny on purpose. try neutral bombing (put it in neutral and rev up then drop into drive) repeat until you blow your tranny =).

I did it with a dremel.. took forever and wasn't smooth.. but yah, I had a pad over it too.. I didn't like where it sat tho...

So the new M5 isn't a sports car?

the intentional reverse at about 45 should work good too. I wouldnt do it on the highway though, that could get dangerous.

The m5 auto trans. is nuts, the gear sare on / off instantly, without delay. I wouldnt compare that to your typical camry auto.
the new M5 will be available later this year with a 6-speed manual.
im not sure if the M5 is considered a sports car, but by all means, it earns the respect as one.
the M5 has gobs of power, and is suprisingly agile, but it is no m3 as far as handling.. All M3's I've seen are all Manual (I.E point being made that part of the joy of a 'sports car' is the joy of a manual transmission)

my mom had brought me 2 the local shop to talk 2 one of teh mecanics there. he builds race cars n shit so he knows whats up. he said it would b easier to swap an engine than a trani. and plus the fact that id prob end up doin it on my back that it would b even more of a bitch. he said best bet 4 a 5spd swap would b to get a parts car, junked but w/5spd so i can see how it was in n all that. thanks for all the help guys keep it comin
