View Full Version : Avoiding a rear-end break

I'm thinking how to put this right since I'm just getting the thing for RWD cars now. Okay, S13 and S14 Rear ends are pretty weak I imagine factory. I'm not in the mood to go shredding up rear ends, is there an alternative, for example on american cars, you can change a 10 bolt for a 12 bolt(I believe) and eliminate the problem. On imports is there like a company that makes reinforcement kits available? If not and it turns out that I'm doomed, would launching at 2000rpms and waiting for the car to just pick up speed much different on 1/4mile times then launching at perhaps, 5500rpms and dropping the clutch? Kinda new at this and I have a really slow civic.

I dont belive that the rear-end on the 240sx or weak at all.It all depends on what you want open diff or lsd or a vlsd lsd being a limited slip which both tires spin out all the time or open meaning that the tires start to spin but stop after a second.
If you drop the clutch at 5500rpms in a 240sx, you will just spin your tires. Launch under 3000 and wait for it to pick up, or if you have a good clutch, launch at 5000rpm but slip the clutch, don't drop it. This way, your car will never be out of the powerband from start to finish.
I have NEVER heard of someone damageing their rearend on a 240. Car's pushing 350++++ rwhp have no problems. You will break your tranny before you differential.

Where did you hear that 240's have weak rear ends? In any case, they are probably not the best car for drag racing. And if you are launching like that then it will be the clutch and transmission that you will be tearing up before the rear end.
Most people install a lsd, usually from a 300zx but Kaaz makes them for 240's also. The 300zx conversion is a VLSD and the Kaaz one is a clutch style (either 1.5 way or 2 way). No Ford 9-inch rear end conversions that I've heard of.

The R200 rear end is very stout. I don't see where you received the inclination that they are weak. Basically the same rear end as the Zcars of the 70's, which are usually hopped up with some major hp.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, the r200 rear end (sold as an option on the s13 and s14) is the same as the one out of the na z32 (300zx). The only difference b/n that and the tc version is the gear ratios (is there an abs sensor issue?).
Otherwise, people get high end units just b/c vlsd's aren't as good at maintaining lock as a mechanical unit. There are no pieces laying on the track that I am aware of.

Haven tested out my car yet but i'd be more worried about the shafts and cv's and the driveshaft before the pumkin breaks. To tell you the truth though, Im alittle scared of my diff. Anyone have any experience with slicks and high rpm launches?

ACTUALLY i have not done it on a track yet but in my driveway i have been practiced my launches. i have like 400+rwhp and slicks and i get the motor at 4000-5000rpm and do a slight dump with the clutch. like i dont dump it really fast but let the clutch out slipping everso slightly

ok, clarification:
- 240sx are NOT fast. not stock anyway. nor were they meant to be. they're autoX, drift cars, they find straight lines exceptionally boring <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>
- as stated above, 240s/180s/200sx's are drift cars. They are put through their paces sliding the rear end around all day in japan... hardly something you could do if it was "weak".
If you were to break the rear just dragging I don't know if I'd be exceptionally impressed, or extremely dissapointed. I guess it doesn't matter since I don't see it happening.

I think drag launches are the ultimate kind of testing for drivetrain parts. I dont know what your talkin bout yoshi

in your initial post, you said "Rear end", which i took as the suspension and such... in which case dragging is nothing compared to drifting as far as stress in concerned. I guess i just took the term "rear end" differently.

"rear end" usually just means the differential.
I don't know anyone that's blown up an R200. They hold up to huge torque behind domestic V8s and RB-series engines in Z cars all the time. You WON'T break the diff with a streetable SR or turbo KA.
If you think it's not enough there's always the 300ZX-TT diff.. it probably won't fit in a 240SX, but oh well... It's an R230.. 9" ring gear <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
