View Full Version : What's your favorite kind of sushi?

exitspeed
04-11-2006, 11:25 AM
I haven't had toooo many variaties but I don't mind having some different kinds.

Mostly like the Cali-roll, and some of the tamer stuff. I usually get ones with shrimp or crab. Those are my favorite.

Recently I had octopus sashimi and spicey scallop sushi (but I don't think it was scallop cause the texture was not scallop-like).

I'm gonna go have some for lunch today.

What kind do you guys like?

PS If you don't like sushi don't mud the thread up about why...

Ok so I just got back from lunch. It was pretty good. As good at any other sushi place I've been to.

HAve a question though. What the menu says "1 piece". Does that mean one long roll cust into the 6 small rolls?

BTW i had spicy shrimp sashimi, which was off the chain, cali roll, some other roll, yellow fin tuna and salmon sashimi.

They are probably referring to nigiri (piece of fish on a wad of rice) compared to maki (rolled in seaweed). When they mean one piece, yeah it is just one piece.

I like

Nigiri:
Tamago (very few places make this right tho)
Toro

Maki:
Futomaki
Oshinko

My fave tho is the Chirashi.

i made up a new kind of sushi roll the other day.

how to make it:
1) eat hella sushi. whatever kind you like
2) poo it out into some sort of container (not a toilet)
3) stretch the poo into a long skinny log
4) wrap it in rice, the roll it in nori
5) cut and server
6) enjoy!

it's called POOSHI

Dood my coworkers and I fook some sushi up for lunch. Out here in Fairfield theres this all you can eat lunch sushi special. Its like $12 and you order wut ever you want. Ill fook some spider rolls in hearbeat. Then Dragon rolls with tempura shrimp, a couple of spicy tuna hand rolls, then they got some salmon skin roll. The salmon skin sounded weird at first but that shiet is fookin good. They char the skin and some salmon meat to make them kinda crispy and make a roll with it. Mind you each piece of the above sush is bout the size of the top of my fist closed. Then finish it off with a bunch of amebi roll.

Anwyways, i havent found a whole of of good traditional japanese sushi restaurants out here. Most of them are korean run jap restaurant * yah thats weird aint it???* KOREAN SUSHI....

As a server at a fine dining yacht (4 star), I see everything from corporate executives who order a bottle of Dom with every course, to the average upperclass cheapass, to the lower-middle class ethnic family who orders a bottle of Moet White Star just for the taste, to the trailor trash who paid all their money on the cruise tickets and can't buy anything else.

Why did I mention this? Because it's the trailor trash that mucks up our food with Ketchup or A1. A1 has a time and a place. Shitty steaks at Sonny's BBQ, Philly Cheesesteaks, making hamburger patties. It doesn't belong on Filet, which is all we serve. However, more offensive than the A1 is the ketchup on the filet. Ketchup has a time and place too. On everything but steak.. that's what steak sauce is for.
There's a difference between a well seasoned steak cooked to perfection, and a shitty chunk of meat cooked to "close enough". The latter gets the A1. Saucing the former lumps you into the category of hillbillies that I described earlier.

I agree about the steak sauce and ketchup. I'd think you'd have to a be a tastless ass to put ketchup on a steak. Nasty fuckers.

i heard about this guy who, when he was in the army, put ketchup on everything cuz the food was so gross. then when he got out, he couldn't stand ketchup cuz he associated it with gross food.

sucks for him.

I also had spicey king crap. SNAPPIN!

I'm really liken this stuff now. I'm gonna try and go once a week. It's so expensive though. They do have a lunch special that's $10.50 and you get 2 peices of sashimi and 2 maki rolls. I'm gonna stick with that.

I've been eating more and more sushi. I even got my wife eating it which is nothing short of a miracle.

Anyone make their own sushi at home? I've been contemplating giving it a shot. I know that it takes years to learn how to even make the rice, and the sushi making technique takes years upon years to master.

Any tips on the type of fish to buy, etc?

i far prefer nigiri to rolls, but rolls are cheap so i like to throw a couple on as filler.

octopus and the eel with sauce on it are both rad, but i'll eat anything. the only things i don't like are sea urchin (it's like eating fish toothpaste) and that egg rectangle shit.

goddamn my short lunch, i'd go to a good sushi place now that i've read this but i don't have time. maybe i'll call ahead to san sai and get some subpar sushi >.>

bonus: good places to get sushi in STL

Nobu's (best, on Olive)
Shogun (south county)
Fuji Sushi (chesterfield)
Wasabi (either downtown or clayton, both are dandy)

I like toro, yellowtail, and salmon the most. Sea urchin can be killer if done right, dreadful if not. Usually I prefer sashimi over nigiri sushi. For rolls, I like blue crab roll, and fried soft shell crap roll. Unagi is good, but I'd rather opt for a hearty bowl of Una-don instead.

Usually what I do, is to order the 'Omakase' (chef's recommendation) at a good sushi spot. Then request to the chef stuff I don't care for, like clam or spanish mackerel.

I hate to admit I like Tamago. :(

funny you should mention that. my buddy, his girl, me and my girl had sushi nite at my house last friday. this was the first time we all tried to make sushi at home and it turned out pretty well. we had fresh tuna and salmon sashimi and rolls. then my buddy spied an open pkg of Krab (imitation crab meat) in the fridge that i used the night before for cream cheese wontons (bomb, btw) and he made up some cali rolls with spicy mayo, cucumbers and yellow pickled radish.

the rice wasn't too hard to make. we just followed the directions on the back of the seaweed package to a T and we had perfect sushi rice.

we ate like 15 rolls or however many leaves of seaweed was in the package. and of course, you have to wash it all down with some ice cold sapporos.

I did it at home once. Wifey wasn't even there to help so I felt proud of myself lol. Like dert^^^ said rice was pretty easy to make.

Everytime I got to my in-laws house, they ask what we want to eat for dinner. I just look at my mother in law and smile and she says ''Hai" and returns w/ sashimi lol. No matter what the main course is we always make our own rolls. Going over there next week WOOT :)

if you like unagi that much, just order the unagi bowl (una-don). They give you a large piece of eel, over a bowl (or square box) of rice. It's essentially the prepared the exact same way, just a lot more cost effective than ordering lots of unagi sushi.
