Hey, what does everyone think of the latest in Variable Vane technology? Porsche has finally come out with it's new 911 with variable van turbos stock. Before nobody could use this technology in gas engines, but now through "aerospace" materials (prob inconel or something) it's possible. This thing holds 457lb-ft from 1950-5000rpms!! Granted it's a bigger engine, but still. HKS had a concept version at I believe at the Tokyo Auto Salon. You know what this means? Bigger, more powerful turbos with tons less lag!! I also have a couple questions. How are the vanes areas of attack adjusted? I'm assuming it's mechanical, but does it have to do with exhaust velocity, or what? Anyone know how much one turbo costs? I'll be first in line to buy one...

little info on the diesel applicaton. i'm sure the 911 vgt tech couldn't be terribly different.

price? i don't want to know. i doubt these wil be available for individual applications for a while. the cost of the materials has to be incredible.

comes standard on all 2004+ 6.0L Ford Powerstroke diesels. Hard to say ford beat porsche to "wild new technology". It's not really new. Many companies have experimented with it but have found it quite troublesome. Needless here's a pic of what the exhaust housing looks like. There is a ring that overlays the white airfoils and it uses an oil pressure fed solenoid to adjust the angle at which the little airfoils go. Can vary the AR size from like .5 to 1.2 or something pretty close.http://www.turbotraining.com/truck/images/PC090060a.jpg Edit. To answer the question about cost. The powerstroke turbos are like $900 new. I would believe it wouldn't be very difficult to adapt this to a car sized turbo. The computer adjusts the angle of the vanes with the solenoid.

Thats fucking badass. Makes me think of a turbocharger with vtec hahahah.

Thats a hella good idea if it can get pulled off. Crazy power in basically the entire powerband

Yes, I know it's not new, but it's first production on a GASOLINE engine. Before exhaust temps were too hot and the mechanism failed.

Question for everone: If the computer controls this, how are we ever gonna get these on our cars?

piggyback controller. I can see it now: APEXi VVSAFC

Diesels have piggyback controllers so people can adjust how fast the vanes open. The older ones run on boost pressure like a internal WG.
