They're called the Model M. They have the best feel while typing since each keystroke gives a distinctive click-in and click-out feel/sound.

IBM clicky keyboards - Other IBM model M

I really want to get one again. I know I can find them on eBay and stuff, but does anyone know if a manufacturer has been crazy enough to re-manufacture a similar type of spring-mechanism keyboard?

Post here if you loved or still love these keyboards!

Staples has one that is similar. Has the same feel but no click. I programmed on them when my school had 8086's. I know how people like them.

Goto staples it's a cheap keyboard. Less than $10

They bought out the rights to the clicky keyboard technology from IBM/Lexmark and still manufacture new clicky keyboards. I always have two keyboards connected to my comp, one clicky and one wireless. I have the customizer 101 from them. Old school!!!!

Nice $hit... :)

Thanks a lot guys...

I don't mind risking $10 to try out that Staples keyboard either.

edit: I just checked staples.com, I can't find that one anywhere. Is it a Staples branded keyboard that can only be bought in stores? or is it out of production? thanks.

They don't list the cheap shit online. I need to pick one up for work. I'll take a pic when I get one. The hide it on the bottom shelf too.

I HATE clicky keyboards. Man they're freaking annoying.. My GF would complain about me being online too much when we were on the phone. Switched to a new keyboard, and no/less complaints :D.

Modern Keyboards use a Mylar button. Air bubble keeps the contacts separated. The old keyboards used a spring that would click when fully depressed.

It's had to explain fully without pics. I'll search.

My high school had a computer room, that echoed every little wisper, with about 100 or so old computers, used for typing out assignments etc., all set up with those "clicky" keyboards. I remember working in there sometimes, when it was full, or close to it;

CLICK, CLICK, CLICK, CLICKETY, CLICK, CLICKETY, CLICK, CLICK.....on and on, it was annoyingly annoying!!! :bash:

One girl worked on a computer, right beside me one day, wearing ear plugs.

I hate those keyboards.

Yeah, in places with more than a single computer, they're just not reasonable to have. But for single computers in single rooms, the single user will indulge...hehe

Mylar buttons = SUCK.

Squishy yucky non feeling garbage if you ask me.

I like my keyboards like I like my music and my car.

ALL METAL

IBM 'clickys' used a metal spring. GOOD laptop keyboards use metal scissors type switches (also IBM and also awesome).

ALL keyboards nowadays are made with the rubber mat suck trash. Even the fancy pants baller dinovo.

I'm typing this on a clicky btw. I own 5.
The best place to source them is ask somebody that you know whos a tech someplace large(my friend happened to work at a bank) and if they know and enjoy the clickys im sure they have a bunch horded from whenever that company 'upgraded' and tried to toss the old school IBMs.

clicky clicky clicky.

Sounds awesome, and its reassuring that you've hit the right button, and not hit anything else random.

I wish the new Optimus was gnna be a clicky too.

I wish the new optimus would be less then a zillion dollars.

I'll give up my clicky and first born for that thing.

I always thought it was cool on the old IBM keyboards that you could just pry up on the key and the keycap would come off. You could then rearrange them to a different keyboard layout. I learned left/right and dual hand DVORAK on top of qwerty. BTW dvorak was designed because the left hand types more than the right so there for it's slower. dvorak was worth 15WPM over qwerty which is a lifesaver when your college job was writing essays for other people. Ok so I was a hard core computer dork in college.

Maeda

Damn I haven't heard about somebody using DVORAK in a long time. +1 for nerds.

yeah qwerty was designed to keep secretary's slow by placing a more used version of the alphabet on the left hand and less on the right. dvorak rearranged them so you could type one handed left or right... as well as dual handed. If you have a copy of win 9x on your system you can go under control panel keyboard and select any of the dvorak styles. ditched with xp. or maybe I just can't find it...

http://www.acm.vt.edu/~jmaxwell/dvorak/comparePage.html

compare how much wasted movement is in the qwerty style.

I'm really curious to try out this clicky keyboard now.

I use a thinkpad 600E daily and love love love the keyboard on it. It's even better than my friend's newer thinkpad keyboard.

Similar as in crappy?
Seriously folks, metal is the way to go. The dell's still a bit mushy for my taste.

Man, I couldn't find that one at Staples (they only had logitechs and microsofts, bleh) and the IBM clickies are so expensive used! Damn...they know people like me want 'em bad.

Maeda
04-13-2006, 02:55 AM
A good keyboard is hard to find nowadays.

99% of em use crappy materials and just churn em out.

If i HAD to go with another keyboard, my g/f has a scissorswitch(laptop style) keyboard with solid plastic switches. 15$ and feels almost as good as a similar IBM, but of course will break much much faster.
