That second one is pimp. It looks like something out of Indiana Jones. My dad has a breitling, yes he is crazy. He bought one for himself and my mom. Heavy as fuck too.

Andrew Bohan
04-07-2006, 06:57 PM
breitling claims their watches will go 100 years without needing to be wound. i'm sure i would break it or lose it in 100 years though.

i could buy a $200 watch every 4 years and go 100 years without winding too...cuz it's 25 watches.

+1 for Fossil watches, I have several
i've broken 2 of the 3 fossils I've owned...I just use my cell phone these days. Not me, I HAVE broken 3 of 12 of them, but EVERY time it was my own damned fault, not a faulty watch.
I mean, I still use my phone to tell time, though. The watch is just there to look good.

haha... for $200k you could get a... damn, you could just about buy ANYTHING for that much. but i guess the guys spending that much on a watch arent really worried about it.

ive got 2 watches, one black square metallic fossil watch with a black face and gold accents for my uniform (which is all black)....

http://www.fossil.com/images/us/local/products/viewlarger/FS4120.jpg

...and a calvin klein silver metallic bracelet with a big, simple face, for when i want to bling.

Do you guys think that a nice watch = status symbol?? the chairperson at our program wears a TIMEX and he must have over millions in his bank account.
Those who don't understand why watch enthusiasts enjoy watches will never "get it". Just as other people might say "why do you need a 180mph car when the speed limit is only 55mph?" Remember, mechanical watches keep far worse time than your everyday $15 quartz from Wal-Mart. So we're paying more for something that tells time, but is fundamentally worse at it's sole task than something that costs 1/10th as much. It's just one of those things that some people enjoy and others will never understand.

I don't think of a watch as purely a status symbol. I wear a suit every day so other than cufflinks my watch is the only piece of jewelry I have. I want that one piece of jewelry to say quality, style, and reliability both to myself when I put it on in the morning, and to my clients. Sure, part of it is status, especially with a blingy Breitling (which are absolutely gross, btw) or a 47mm Panerai, but my Omega is very understated and says "he appreciates a quality watch but isn't stupid enough to spend $10,000 on one."

This is what my watch looks like:

It's an Omega Seamaster Professional Bond.

I decided to line up my Fossils like that too...
This collection does not include the 2 I forgtot to confiscate when I was at my brother's crib last week and the one each Coach, Guess and Kenneth Cole that are buried in the drawer over there.
I prefer to wear my Fossils on a daily, each came with an 11 year warranty and not one has ever needed it.

Tag Link Chrono (first big purchase after I got a job, kinda regret it, overpriced)
Sector 975
Tissot PRC200
Omega Speedmaster (graduation gift)
some cheapo Pulsar Chrono I got back in the broke ass college days

The funny thing is the two watches I wear the most by far are also the two cheapest, the Tissot and the Pulsar. Especially the pulsar. I bang the shit out of it and never a hiccup, EVER.

Note.. anyone who wants a rolex.. Don't get one for time keeping. They suck. All rolex's give about a minute a month and last 3ish days before stopping so it's an everyday wear thing. My Rolex Submariner is no exception. My Tag Huer keeps good time but my personal fave that gets alot of complements is a cheap Android Ultra Watch. $75 http://www.android-usa.com/img/watches/AD53ABU.jpg

Many Others from there as well. Very rugged. Never the less 1 Rolex 2 Tag's and some play around watches.

Currently have another Skagen, looks similar to this (http://skagen.c4.ixwebhosting.com/store.asp?area=FullProduct&productID=710) but not exactly.

This is pretty fresh.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/f1-carbon-watch.jpg

F1/Carbon GMT concept watch (pictured above) from designer John Pszeniczny

The innovative timepiece has a digital display (gasp!) that will show the time at any of the 18 race tracks on the 2008 Formula One calendar. Like an actual F1 car, it's constructed from carbon fiber, metal and rubber, but rather unlike an F1 car, is studded with rubies and Swarovski crystals. Also, like grand prix cars, the unique timepiece is extremely costly, with a reported retail price well into five figures, so you'd have to be an F1 driver or team owner to actually afford one.

Here's what I wear on a daily basis, Tag F1 Chronograph. I actually got it for free from my old employer when we closed a big deal.

It's a nice enough watch, durable, sapphire crystal. Unfortunately it's Quartz and I'm usually not at all into any sort of non-mechanical watch, but it helps that it's a $1,000 watch that I paid nothing for, lol:

http://crave.cnet.com/i/bto/20070326/tagh_270x435.jpg

I've also got a couple old (1960's) Omegas which look nice but aren't really worth any serious amount of money.

Unfortunately for me, all the watches I REALLY like are insane complications and thus cost high-5 to six figures, like the following. I will probably never own any of these, as even if I had the money I'd have a tough time spending $100,000-$1MM on a watch.

Ulyssee Nardin Johannes Kepler Tellurium:

http://nexus404.com/Blog/wp-content/uploads2/2007/08/ulysse-nardin-perpetual-calendar-orbit-watch.jpg

Ulyssee Nardin "Forgerons" Minute Repeater:

(a minute repeater actually chimes the time through purely mechanical means, like a grandfather clock on your wrist):

A Lange & Sohne Tourbograph "Pour le Merite"

Breguet Tradition 7047:

Breguet Tourbillon Messidor:

http://www.horlogerie-suisse.com/imagebreguet/2007/tourbillon-messidor.jpg

Oh, and to whomever mentioned Tissot, they actually make really nice (for the price) automatic watches. IMO they are the best bargain in sub-$1,000 watches of any type. Over $1k, the best bargain is probably Maurice Lacroix, who makes a lot of neat little complications.

i have two watches. a retro Casio G-Shock and a fake Rolex Milgauss (it's a rad fake, though, it's marked properly, has a sweep second hand, and is self winding).
i'd buy a "decent" (sub $500) watch if i thought i'd wear it a lot. i wear the Fauxlex when i dress up, but that's pretty rare. it'd be nice to have a decent watch, i don't know, a Citizen or like a Calvin Klein or something, because then i wouldn't have to come up with a reason why i appear to own a six thousand dollar watch, or admit that it's fake.
but again, i wear it maybe two or three times a year. and watches are a dead technology.

For some of you nerdy people Tokyoflash watches might be of interest not my cup of tea but it's something that caters to a different crowd. Yes it actually does tell time, but mostly in binary form.

http://www.tokyoflash.com/en/

Hours 1-12 are displayed in the left column, from the bottom to the top, minutes from the bottom right, each lit LED representing a single minute. The time can be read more quickly if you look at the numbers on the right, each row of lit LEDs is equal to five minutes. The date can be read in a similar way.

so take this watch below. it reads 9:30

i've broken 2 of the 3 fossils I've owned...I just use my cell phone these days.
I hate when a dude says "thats stupid i use my cell phone to tell time"
Its not just about telling time.

This is the watch I wear daily. I got it in a back alley in Akihabara.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/S14DB/OffTopic/Casio1.jpg
I like the G sensor Indiglo. When you bring the watch up to look at the time it turns on the backlight. Still haven't figured out what the e Data Bank is.
Did you go to any Maid cafe's in Akihabara? haha

This guy fucking gets it. +One million for him.

Oh and i dont care if you're left or right handed, a man wears his watch on his LEFT wrist.

Paul2x
03-10-2010, 01:55 PM
Agreed ^^ for the most part outside of fact 47mm Pani's are gangster, and the left hand comment.

My big thing is the bandwagoners, guys that have the $$ but no appreciation for the watches, they just get whats "in" or what is known to be "in"

Rolex for instance. An amazing watch but I would never spend the $$ for one b/c their are Sooooo many other options out their for the same price or less that are way cooler.

Not to mention its the most knocked off watch out their.

Just saw this thread, I think as I get older and over the whole car thing. Watches will be my thing. I have a mini collection currently. Here is the one I wore today. Movado Fiero made out of tungsten, so it's virtually scratch proof. I paid a little under 3k for it in 2006. It's an awesome watch and I always get compliments for it. It was almost the same price as my s14. When I bought the chassis stock, but it was worth it.

Quick pick, as you can see i was cruising this thread lol.

i rock a bretling i love the watch. but its sooo dam heavy!
Not a problem to me, I like the heaviest watch I can find.
Oh and i dont care if you're left or right handed, a man wears his watch on his LEFT wrist.
EXACTLY!!!
The hand for a watch to be worn on, by design, has nothing to do with an individual's strong hand, but with the ease of setting the watch without having to remove it, which is why the crown is on the right hand side of every watch I have ever owned or touched.
It kills me to see someone in a $4-figure+ watch with it on the wrong hand.

slamburger
03-26-2010, 01:37 AM
I feel the same, heavy is not a problem for me either.

Now Philip, there are a few watches i've seen with the adjuster on the "wrong" side so to say? is that cuz some people wear their watch on the wrong arm?

such as this one:

I would be willing to bet that it was made for people who just refuse to be able to wear their left hand, if the crown and such are on the other side.
None of the watches I own are like that, though.

Off to work in one of those big chunky motherfuckers I posted way up there, I love em.

Yes. Panerai has a series of pieces called "Destro" which are for left-handed people who wear their watch on their right hand. The winders, chronograph pushers, etc. are on the "other" side of the watch.

Couple Lucien Piccards, A Bulova which i love almost as much as my TAG, and a few other brands which escape me. Legitimate thread bump situation…

At the end of October, I was browsing Ebay just to see what I saw and happened upon this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/KS-Automatic-Mechanical-6-Hands-Steel-Sport-Men-Watch-/170712667507?pt=Wristwatches&var=&hash=item6d70ca6fee). (<--- not a link to anything I am selling, but to the actual one I bought)
Perfunctory Google search told me that it was your standard Chinese Mechanical mov’t watch that seems to be flooding Ebay these days, but peoples descriptions led me to think “hell, $38.99 isn’t a lot to cry about,” and went ahead for the Buy it Now option. One issue I had was that despite shipping from Northern California, the damned thing took over a week to arrive. That was more on the seller, not the item itself, though.

Anyway, when I opened it, I was expecting that I would have to manually wind the watch based upon the details of the sale, but when I moved it to take it out of the box, it started up, which suggests to me that the watch is self-winding. To test this theory, I did not wind it the night I got it, instead I let it die until the morning and THEN wound it after being very careful not to awaken it… I wore it all day Friday and Saturday, but not to bed and it was still up with no time gained or lost even to right now, and maintained the winding.

About the watch itself; a Breitling-style (Navitimer, I think) watch with an allegedly Stainless Steel band. I say “allegedly” because I own enough watches with actual stainless bands that don’t feel this cheap. I KNOW I will break this band in a month or less if I keep it.
Luckily, however, that is my only gripe with the actual product, and it can be addressed and fixed for less than 30 bucks. It will be replaced within a week or two.
In all, this watch is not as nice as, say… one of the ones that 32 Degrees makes, but it doesn’t pretend to be either, and the 32 Degrees ones are beginning to price themselves WAY more than I paid for the one I bought January last year (and still wear 6 days a week without issue). If presented with the opportunity to get it again, I would say “I might,” but that is pending the outcome of two more watches I ordered from Deal Extreme the night after I ordered this one. Those have not yet arrived, so the jury is out on them and I will make a decision when they do.
For now, though, I need to put a new band on this one.

My girlfriend surprised me with a watch a few weeks ago. I've always been a huge fan of bigger watches, though not rapper status or anything of that nature, just a larger watch like a lot of what I see in this thread. She's always liked watches but never been in love with anything.

Anyway, I guess a guy came into her office and she fell in love with his watch. She learned a bit about it and then found one for me.

Amazon.com: Swiss Legend Men's 40025-BB-RN Throttle Chronograph Black Ion-Plated Watch: SWISS LEGEND: Watches (http://www.amazon.com/Swiss-Legend-40025-BB-RN-Chronograph-Ion-Plated/dp/B001T0HUXK)

http://images.bizrate.com/resize?sq=500&uid=905463713

Apparently when it was brand new it was sold for around a grand, but the past few years since it was released (like everything else) the price has come down to a more reasonable number. There are a dozen different colors, but mine is as pictured in that link. Glossy black band, carbon bezel, brass screws, etc.

$21.20 shipped, fully automatic, but can be wound manually for a longer-lasting winding if desired. Movement is more visible than other watches, and watch is still see-through to the point where you can see skin behind it.
As ever, I am putting a new band on it this weekend and all will be better.

I recieved this Elysee watch for my college graduation a few years back. I love it. A few months back I was rushing to get ready in the morning, and the watch slipped out of my hand as I was putting it on. Dropped bezel-first on to kitcken tile and shattered. I was so pissed.

I contacted the original seller, and they sent me a paid postage box. They returned the watch to Germany and completely replaced the bezel and cleaned out all of the glass. Shipped it back to me for no charge what-so-ever. Needless to say I feel that is awesome customer service for a watch that costs under $450.

I also have an interited vintage gold Seiko from the 70s that's actually a nice piece. I bought my father in law Bell & Ross:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/411SiWE%2BAIL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

My next watch will probably be either a Bell & Ross BR03, Panarei or Breitling Navitimer if I am feeling pretentious.

It's nice to see the Tags, Omegas and Oris represented. I have never been a huge fan of them but they are worn by co-workers.

Just picked up this Skagen Denmark in black not too long ago. Love the clean look. Titanium with a very slim ss mesh band. Semi cheap at around $100 depending where you shop.

Seiko is actually kind of funny. They make some of the best watches in the world (grand seikos, credor, prospex, etc), but have only tacky/busy looking watches for the U.S. market (probably to satisfy American taste, or lack thereof).

Here is one that I'm going to be pulling the trigger on soon (Steinhart ocean gmt coke i.e. Rolex gmt master homage):

Nice to see zilvians like watches too. My dad and I have quite the collection. I have a a few Invictas, a tag heuer, croten and a few cheaper ones for daily use like my citizen and pulsar. I tend to buy watches that dont require batteries because I can never remember to pull the crowns so I always end up with dead batteries so most of my watches are motion or solar powered. My dad on the other hand is baller and puts my collection to shame :(

They sell Grand Seiko's in the US, my boss has a Grand Seiko spring drive. Very nice, but from 10 feet away you wouldn't be able to differentiate it from some regular Seiko quartz. They're for watch nerds.

Anyone got a cool single hand watch they want to share? Preferably sub 2k?

my beef with it is the case-to-wrist design. sits flat, is chunky, and doesn't raise off the wrist. IM ALL FOR HUGE WATCHES.... as long as the caseback is rounded.

Sounds like U-Boat might be of interest then, or Panarei, or Hublot. I am not a fan of Panareis even though they have a cult following. Hublot I like but I think they cost too much. I tend to like the more dressy watches like A. Lange & Sohne. And I forgot Audemars Piguet, which I also can appreciate but they aren't really my thing

Too true

I was at a cookout a couple weeks ago at my sister's and my brother in law's uncle was fixated on my arm while we all stood around and talked. Sterlin, my brother in law asked him "Jimmy, what the hell are you doing" to which he responded "trying to figure out if I could EVER tell the time on that watch!"

The explanation came that, even though I do make sure the time and date are accurate before leaving my house, my watches are really only tasked with looking good and drawing compliments.

Crappy pics but I just started really getting into watches recently. I love this watch but it's pretty thick. The red line on the back is just the clear cover that didn't take off yet. Here's my contribution so far:

9 months and no one has posted...

Background:
I was on eBay to score a deal on a dealership item for my daily ($69 at dealer, $23 on eBay) and since I have shopped for/bought watches before, my suggestions sometime suggest shit that I will USUALLY ignore.
But this time (this was late January), I got click happy and looked further into it.
6 weeks later, this has happened:

No, they do not pretend to be "nice" watches, or even anything more than "a huge face with a bunch of dials," but in a world where we don't wear our watches to actually tell time but to have people notice and mention them, they're serving their purpose(s) without fail. Between the 6 you see there, I am only $78 invested - note that there is quite a bit of "wait on it to get here from China involved - and my brother paid $25 of that for two of them.
Sure, I am not buying another watch for a LOOOOONG time, but I am pleased with my purchases of this winter.

Surprised i never seen this thread

Back last year i was really into Patek watches with the winding movements and moonphases. Spent ridiculous amounts of money but gladly i made more back selling then buying.

I stuck with this one and its been serving me pretty good. These watches like said above are not really for telling time lol theyre more for showing off. Ive gotten room upgrades, dinner table at reserved places, walking in closed events, and outstanding services with this watch.. People notice pateks a mile away

If you have a chance definitely pick one up. I guarantee you won't be disappointed! I have watches that cost 5 times as much with the same build quality. Just goes to show you how much of a watch you get with hamilton.

What are some pretty good watches that arent too expensive. Say the $300-$500 range?

I currently use this Michael Kors watch
http://images.bloomingdales.com/is/image/BLM/products/3/optimized/8363683_fpx.tif?bgc=255,255,255&wid=236&qlt=90,0&layer=comp&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.7,1.0,0.5,0&fmt=jpeg

Which is pretty good for the price range. I use it almost daily and do everything in it.

But I was looking at something maybe a little more high quality. I would love to own a Rolex or a Breitling in the near future, but thats probably not going to happen till I become a millionaire haha.

I'd consider Victorinox/Swiss Army or something along that line. But they're not so fashionable as your MK.

Thats just me though.

Valid thread bumping activities...

A friend of mine put me onto WatchAMonth (http://watchamonth.com) last weekend. Wary at first, but still not expecting the best watch in the universe, I figured $26.75 was not a terribly painful expense to feel them out.
The first one came in the mail yesterday:
https://scontent-b-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t1.0-9/10410429_10203857000323033_9178850523539636443_n.j pg

I know that I will receive some that I do not like. Those can be sold off for $50 or held onto for Christmas gifts or something.
I think I will ride this one out for a little while though.

Who has been fuckin with the brands that have popped up in the years since this thread was moving along?
I currently have a Pagani Design piece in the air from China at the moment and have been looking at a couple of Parnis as well.

Movado is a great brand! I wore a Sub Series 800 Chronograph on my wedding day, and over the years have added to my collection.

I was arranging my collection and realized just how many watches I don't wear anymore due to how my tastes have changed.

This 12 make up my normal rotation.

Invicta 15187 Lupah
32 Degrees Glider (auto)
32 Degrees Tundra
Adee Kaye AK 9006 Aviator
Adee Kaye 9041 Guardian
Adee Kaye 9001 Pilot
Louis Richard 9039
Louis Richard LR-4068 (auto)
Joshua & Sons JS59
Invicta 19703 Specialty Chronograph
Invicta 26408 Pro Diver (mechanical)
Swiss Legend Challenger

I have one more Invicta in the back that I didn't remember to bring until I had already taken and uploaded the pic.

I'm a pretty big guy, so a 47mm+ watch is not a problem for me to wear. I love the heft of them.
I think of my collection as "affordable," I will hunt the best possible deal and have ZERO qualms about waiting for a month or two for a delivery from China. A couple of FB groups have brought some new brands to my attention, and I will be ordering a Vostok from Russia week after next.
My wife doesn't even question me and new watches anymore. In fact, she paid for two of the ones in the pic here.

If only you all knew how much some of those watches cost to make...

It's hard for me to buy watches because I had a short run of them made (few hundred piece run, no shared design parts with other watches, had to have a custom die made) and I know how much it costs to have a watch made in China, Switzerland, and in the US.

The factories I toured make watches for people I considered my competitors. I saw their quality first-hand and got quotes from them. I also got to see some, ahem, unauthorized reproductions of luxury brands and the finishing work was impressive.

Chinese quality has come a long way; I'd wear a Seagull 1963 almost as often as I wear my Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto and the case finishing on both is better than my Longines HydroConquest USA Edition (which was a gift; I'm not at the $2k watch give-a-shit level).

I'm currently wearing a Timex Q Reissue on a Martini band. Haven't found the perfect beater auto yet.

I have a pretty good idea that it is next to peanuts. I collect what I like and i wear my shit. That said, I refuse to pay more than $150 for a watch. And to your point of the Chinese pieces coming up in quality, you're ABSOLUTELY right. Some of the ones I got about 10 years ago have me shaking my head at myself.
Some of the homages and bespoke designs from the same companies that make them have my eye. I am also looking toward customization, swapping bezels and using some Zulu and Nato straps next

The issue I have with expensive watches is the purpose. I hear the stupid Apple Watch commercial chirping in the background saying 'this. watch. tells. time.' I wear an Apple Watch after my years of semi-expensive pieces because of the practicality. Sometimes I'll toss on a decent piece like a Christopher Ward Trident or a Tissot Chrono. I used to enjoy collecting them but I just feel like the lighter, more powerful/useful watches have taken over. It's a shame this world - and I suppose myself - are so reliant on technology and the need to be 'connected.'
