View Full Version : Warped Head Diagnosis - How can I tell?

Intermittent (twice) overheating on s13 SR, I'm narrowing down, initially a loose hose and I bet it's not bled properly now (which I know how to do - thanks), but I'm curious:

If the head is warped just enough to overheat, but nox mixing coolant/oil or blowing smoke - is there a way to diagnose this is a problem? Would a compression test revel a slight warpage issue?

I would bring to machine shop if I were you.
They can tell you if its warped or cracked
Best bet or you could test your self look in the fsm you'll see something there onit.
Good Luck

The cylinder head is going to have to be removed and then you check with a feelr gauge and a straight edge.

Yeah..that is the only way you can check it for now.

pressure test the system. IDK of any way you could have a blown/leaking HG without getting coolant in the oil, chambers, or leaking externally.

bleed it good and check your rad cap too.

In fancy shops there is a tool you can use. You take the rad. cap off and then you but the sensor over it with the car running and it senses if there are any hydrocarbons coming from the coolant. Cool stuff.

Yeah, its actually testing for Carbon Monoxide (CO) in the coolant system but if the leaking cylinder is mis-firing it will not show up, also pressure test the system.

To be completely sure the is an internal coolant leak:
-Take top rad hose off radiator
-Take out the thermostat
-Remove water pump drive belt
-Fill system with water, top rad hose just removed from the rad
-Put themometerin hose
-If any bubles appear before the boiling point there is a combustion leak

Up till the point my motor blew, I was leaking coolant into 2 cylinders but, it was not getting mixed with the oil (kept checking the oil for water, and vice versa). Its actually very common b/c the block at the edge of the cylinder corrodes after a while and this will allow your coolant to leak into there.

chambers = combustion chamber aka cylinder

Some of them also test for hydrocarbons. We use a 4-gas analizer for the test (exactly like the sniffer test machine w/o NOx sensor).

Huh, that's cool, I did't know that...
