Anyone have specialty or collector insurance on your SR powered cars? If so, who do you use for this? My current insurance co. only wants to insure as a standard KA engine, so should a wreck occur damaging the engine, I'm out an SR. I did not see anything else in the threads to this extent. Can someone plz advise?
Thanks

As far as I know, where I live in Tennessee, SR20DET engines are not illegal. No emissions testing or anything to that effect, so I still need insurance.

When you have jeep wranglers rolling with overbored turbo'd LS1 engines and straight pipes as daily drivers, how can an SR be illegal?

Tennessee must be great but as dousan said..insurance co will not cover it. They will only cover the stock motor. You need to learn how to play by their rules. First off if you do get in a accident look for repair shops that specialize/work with swaps. Talk to them about it and if you seem cool enough they will do an sr20det swap install for you and charge the insurance company for a ka which is about the same price as an sr20det (repair value). At least that's how it is in socal.

This will only work if you wreck the car. If its stolen...kiss your beloved sr goodbye

Granted, thats an option, but to prevent that is why I started this thread. I would be lead to think that the folks who build custom cars, have some kind of specialty insurance out there to cover the custom parts and such. Just trying my best to keep everything honest.

It exists, look around some more. Second to that, insure for a specific value.

i know a lot of those guys with collector cars use Haggerty insurance or something like that, they specialize in insuring collector cars but I don't think a 240 with an SR is viewed as a collector car seeing as how they're a dime a dozen these days.

Its a flat out waste of money. Take whatever extra they want you to pay ( I did some math and the price to upgrade for $5000 in coverege was $300 a month, I currently pay $50. So $250x12 = $3000 a year.

I am better off saving that money in the bank and if anything happens using that to fix it instead of fighting with an insurance company that will try and use wear and tear, or the parts not being brand new as a reason to give me 50% of what its worth.

And if nothing goes wrong, shoot I got extra cash.

it can be insured. like stated above, you determine what the car is worth and your standard insurance company will adjust accordingly. you can have almost anything insured on your car. but you will end up paying for it. a classic car insurance company probably isnt where to look. generally they have a mileage limit. well, here in michigan they do, due to having a snowy winter season.

deem my JDM B16 AND RB25DET illegal all you want. fact of the matter is, they CAN be insured. anything can be insured.

It all depends on the insurance company and their adjuster. I can have somebody look at my car and they can adjust the price of the car. Its just a question of whether my insurance will like the idea of me having an engine thats not suppose to be in the car. Plus the fact that the car makes more power than they know it should. I think they'd jack my premium up more in a heartbeat. The only thing saving my ass right now is that my insurance will cover any modifications I have to my car as long as i have proof that I have it. Proof as in pictures and receipts. So rims, suspension, sounds, interior, CDs *I got 5 books of CDs that has close to 500 in each*. Engine mods the iffy part, they said theyd cover stuff in it but hmm...i got an SR so...
