I'm starting to get into racing a little, and i've been hearing a lot about 240sx's in autocross events. From what i've gathered this seems like a great way to get into racing since most of the skill involved in roadcourses is in cornering. Does anyone here autocross? how do i get started (do i need a license or just a helmet and a car?)
Well I don't auto-x yet, but I'll share some of the links I've found while looking for information same as you...
http://www.scca.org
http://www.sccaforums.com
http://home.dejazzd.com/mlouie/autocross.html
http://www.autox4u.com
http://moutons.org/sccasolo/Rules/index.html
http://www.tirerack.com/features/solo2/handbook.htm
http://www.solo2.org
http://www.nasaproracing.com
IIRC you have to have a valid drivers liscense
They should have a loaner helmet for you...
SCCA.org has a section [somewhere on the site] that allows you to look up local scca auto-x hosts.

Read it cover to cover a couple times...other setions i've read many times. THE BEST site i've seen for beginner driving stuff. I was just linking auto-x specific stuff, not driving/handleing. heh maybe i'll edit this and add some more "how to drive" type links in a bit...

This is a good topic. thought i would bump it just a bit. I heard about autoX when i was looking for cars and looked at the corolla. A person who had one autoX in the bay area and i was like cool. Then when i got my 240 i said i will do that stuff. A friend of mine told me that there was a up coming autoX event and i said cool i will be there. It is next weekend <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/notify.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':notify:'> so i will be there. Check the website tho . I think it is SCCA.org.. yes it is. anyway they have the different places so you can contact a local or semi-local group. Where are you from?

The best way to get in to auto cross is to find an event near you. Any of the sites DSC posted should have posted a schedule of upcomming events and or at least links to a site that dose. If you have never been to an auto cross before you may just want go and hang out once or twice to get a feel for how they work, talk to the locals, and get all your questions answered. I have found people at most auto crosses to be very helpfull and willing to answer questions, even the "stupid" ones <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>. Every event and orginazation is a bit different so it is best to go and see for your self. If you have any freinds that are in to it, tagging along with them is perfect.
Good luck and have fun!

WOW - uu's in Sweden and he's posting... that's bitchin.
The answer is that everyone here has said. There really isn't anything to getting started - just get out there and do it. If you wind up going alone - get there early and hang out with some people in the registration area. Make friends! They'll help you with figuring out what to do.
Autox is starting to get a little too popular around here - so you have your mix of ricers and snotty national drivers, but by and large, any type of grassroots racing brings out some of the nicest people who share a very common interest with you. Let us know where you are at and perhaps we can point you in the right direction.

I don't believe in spoon feeding people information. I do it a lot and I'm tired of it...I won't anymore.
If you click the above links you can find a club near you, previously designed courses and even tips on designing a course.
BTW, even if its abandoned, expect to get a reckless driving ticket if your caught. Only do it if you can get written permission from the OWNER or someone speaking on his/her behalf.
