Rust Repair Jeopardize Performance?

I currently have some major rust problems on the passenger side of my 1992 240sx. The rust is a couple of inches under the door and can not be seen unless you look under the car.

My problem is, will cutting out the rust and just leaving a hole in the body jeapardize the handling of the car or anything else?

Where is the rust? If it isn't in a structural part then it shouldn't be that bad.

And why would you leave an open hole there. Water will just collect in the hole and create more rust elseware.

If it is so bad to which you HAVE to cut some metal out, then reweld some new sheet metal in it's place.
