Thanks guys,

Here's a crazy idea... SEARCH.

Your post is too vague, 6 bolt or 5 bolt?

I Dont have time to really search(I'm at work)!! I thought i could get some info. I am not to sure which one I have but I ask because I'm at work and I cant go and get on my knees out side in the rain and check, but I found deal on one. I am a 1990 240sx with an open diff.

I put a VLSD in my 90 240, its a 6 bolt flange. I got the VLSD out of a hicas car, Bolted right up, axles and all, I just changed the rear ends, It was tight getting it in, but it was'nt bad, it took maybe 45 min.

So, your answer is yes to the stock axles. It was a straight bolt up for me. But find out of your bolt pattern ect, make sure it will mate to what you have.
Good luck.

if the vlsd is already 6 bolt then yes it will bolt up (assuming your 90 has 6 bolt axles). also you may need to get shorter driveshaft end if the vlsd you are swapping in is from an abs car. ive heard of some people swapping without swithing the rear driveshaft piece might get some vibration. there is also a diff swap guide in the archive by driftfreaq. take a look when you have the chance.

the diff that I put in my car was in the abs/hicas car, it went straight in, No problem.

sweet thanks for the advise, so I should just be sure to ask him if the VLSD is for the ABS model. Hmm, but if it was, I'd need to pick up a driveshaft huh. Can the VLSD internals get old and mest up? Say it came out of a car that had 150k+ miles or sat around for awhile, would that cause any internal problems?

Mine was close to that milage, We just changed the fluid to royal purple, It RUNS great. It depends on the shape it is in. Who knows how it was taken care of, that's what you get buying used. You take your chances. Mine was fine, got it out of a junckyard, 75$, it's fine.

sweet thanks!! So can any of you guys actually expain what a Viscous LSD does? I just know that it grabs both axels alittle better then open.

yeah it does like this:
tire mounted on wheel which bolts to hub which the axle is splined to fit into. the axle bolts to the stub axles (output shafts) which are splined and fit into the diff. the axles both turn discs inside the viscous unit (which is completely sealed) and as they spin they turn through the viscous fluid. When one wheel spins faster than the other it creates friction because the two discs aren't spinning at the same speed. friction causes heat. as the viscous fluid heats up it becomes much thicker, locking the discs together, and therefore locking the wheels together. as they get older the viscous gets crappier and doesn't lock up as well. sticky tires and burnouts speed up the death.
also this type of diff is "reactive" in that one wheel has to spin before the diff will limit slip, unlike some other types of diffs which prevent slip to start with.

Hmmm, thanks for the info. I kinda find it rare to find a diff that has low milage, unless I get it from nissan huh? I think I'm gonna take a trip to the junk yard this weekend and try and find one. I think that would be a lot cheaper the paying 250 from most sellers

they are $200 from most of the junkyards here in houston, but that comes with axles. age isn't necessarily going to be an indicator of wear... one from a Z or possibly a manual trans S14 may have more wear at 50k than one from a J30 with 100k, just from the abuse from the previous owners.
