I own a 95 240sx, 98000 miles on a stock KA engine with an ACT street clutch. Why does my car feel sluggish some days but feel great on some other days? I notice the power difference on first gear. It seems to feel sluggish when weather changes.....not sure:-/ . Maybe time for an SR:rawk: ? Any help please.
Thanks, Mario

Maybe you should try asking your car? Pull the codes from the ECU (search) and see what you find. When was the last time you did a tune up?

funny how the first thing everybody jumps to when they think their KA is dying is to do an SR swap. A car's performance is affected by many different factors...
Definitely on a colder day you will find your car running better than on a hot day. Heat kills.
Maybe all your car needs is some TLC. sparks, oil change, compression test, maybe some sea foam treatment, radiator fluid, etc...
KA with 98K is low. I think the KA is a great engine. I think you should be more open to not thinking that the SR swap is the holy grail for the 240. There are many KA-Ts that can woop some ass.

i agree. my KA has about 126k, but still pulls VERY STRONG. it just takes some good lovin' after you beat up on it. i might even boost this motor!

if you cant maintain your ka what makes you think you will with the sr? you will most likly neglect basic maintenance with the sr as you probably did with the ka.
I noticed you said it happends in first gear, so that makes me think you feel this power difference as soon as you turn the car on while the water temp is still under operating temp. WOT while under operating temp will make it feel kinda sluggish

If your spark plug wires are old, you could get sluggishness, especially when its moist out. get a tune up, and as already mentioned, air temps make a noticeable difference

yea, mantain that bitch and it will be good to you. I'm a fuckin mantaince whore. I change oil and coolent every event, and diff, tranny, PS and every thing else every 3 events. Track only car too. Makes for a happy engine. Also I missed the NA stuff, but I like the boost. It helps shoot the rear out when you get on the power. I still need to drive a KAT. I <3 my SR, but I want to see what all the fuss is about....

I notice power loss when it's damp or when weather changes dramatically. Maybe it's time for new spak plug wires. Any spark wire recomendation?
.....I love my KA when it's running up to par, but it just irritates me when I feel sluggishness every here and there.
Thanks for the repies my fellow zilvians:rawk: .

DUDE... Hit the NOS bro.. Also, try warming up the lady before you take it out... I have turbo, but I generally do that with every car I have. But then again, that is one of the biggest reasons why I miss NA, just start up and go... =/
ka= slow. thats why
worthless post.
as far as the temperature affecting your car, that is more apparent with a turbo car. maybe your MAF hot wire is weirding out and making it run too rich, and making it lug?

get some NGK 'blue' spark plug wires, replace your spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor while you're at it. check/change fluids, etc.

Yeah it just needs a tune up do what the above said and it should be back to normal. Don't dump 3 grand into an SR swap only to not maintnence the car properly, First thing I did when I got my car was oil change ( to synthetic, the car has 149,xxx on the clock KA24DE), Brakes, and now power steering. Next month is spark plugs, wires, and suspension.
Ah and "nbrindley" for some reason call me weird but I love that 2 tone on the trailered 240!

ohhhh yeah you need a tune up. We can shoot numbers on the odometer, 214,XXX and still going since i got it at 82,000. I put over a hundred thousand miles and it still runs good. Get on the ball and start maintaining. and i just had to laugh about ka being slow. hahaha sr's are so jdm.

Well if you have an FSM it will tell when you need proper maintenance.
It could be possible that you haven't given the car a complete tune up. About every 30,000miles, the KA will need new wires, plugs, cap and rotor. That means it should of been done at 90,000miles and you are about 8,000 miles over due. Maybe you also need fluid changes....Who knows what the problem really is. You can get a copy of the FSM at www.zeroyon.com

Maintain a vehicle and it will treat you well. I don't think switching to synthetics in an engine that has over 60k miles is a good idea (personal opinion). Do a good tune up on it. The denser and colder the air it will give you more power due to better combustion.

OMG, I just replaced the rotor and distributor cap and what a difference. My 240sx feels like it's been given a new engine......I love it:boink: . Spark plug wires are next on my list.
I guess that I'll focus on coilovers and LSD instead of an SR:D . I WANT TO GIVE A BIG ROUND OF A PLAUSE TO ALL ZILVIA MEMBERS:bowrofl: . THANKS, MARIO
