Andrew Bohan

1-5/8" OD, .134" wall thickness for the larger tubes. smaller ones are 1-1/4" OD, .134" wall thickness

track car

is that DOM tubing? i know erw doesn't pass inspection, what about ews? i was looking at a pre-made cage that was made from ews and i couldn't find any information on whether that was the same as erw

What motorsport is this for? Not SCCA (FD) or D1?

nice choice in tubing and size.....only thing i wouldve done differently is tig instead of mig, but mig still works good as long as you know what your doing....judging from the look of the welds, it looks like you do!

u should fill up the tubing with lead.......lol jk andrew...

Thanks i had fun welding the cage.

I agree about the tig, but for some reason formula d doesnt want cages tig welded anymore, this is because with a tig torch you can make the tubing thinner.

Anyways, mig will work great if it gets hot enough.

henry made that rule for Formula D because not all ppl taht weld metal add metal while welding some ppl pull the metal together. tig is cleaner mig will do the job.

03-27-2006, 12:10 AM
Formula D told me it's fine to TIG as long as it follows their aws specs. Which means, yea - no undercutting. So I TIG'd mine (even though I don't give a piss about scca =X)
Anyway, why such heavy tubing?

blu808
03-27-2006, 12:33 AM
Why such heavy tubing? Because if its not dom it needs to be thicker.

Besides didnt you know, the heavier the car. The faster it is. :boink: :boink:

lol.

Sorry, I was assuming it was DOM or chromoly from an approved supplier.

Anywho, neat cage - I like how you guys document your cars to an extent, makes for good viewing.

Andrew Bohan
03-27-2006, 10:59 AM
the correct syntax for that is "shock andrew'sFCrollcagewelding"

the "-ing" always goes at the end :)

anyways, yea we'll be done tonight... or tomrrow. depending on how excited we get. and if there's any welding gas left...

Andrew Bohan
03-29-2006, 01:29 AM
no, idiot. they shipped it to my apt. then i had to get off work early to go pick it up from my apt office before they closed. i hate that shit. i used to have to skip school if i was expecting a package, or else i couldn't get it til the weekend.

Holy shit doood, you plan on putting that thing into a lightpole or tree sideways or something? That door bracing might be a little much.....to every man his own though, right? But yea, how did you get such nice fitup where the pipes are welded together? I dont think I've ever seen such nice fit-up prep.

A + for you sir.

Andrew Bohan

tubing notcher.

http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/152391_lg.jpg

you put a hole saw the size of the tubing you're welding onto on the bottom end of that shank and put a drill on the top end. then you clamp the tube in the clamp, adjust the angle, and drill away.
