Currently I have 17x8 +35 with 235/45 17 all the way around. I am replacing the rears with 17x9 +20 and buying all new tires. I'm considering 255/40 17 rear and 235/45 front. Any suggestions for getting different sizes?

What kinda tires? Different brands will bulge more or less at the sidewalls, making it difficult to gauge what size tire you want. Your going for a nice fitment im assuming. Perhaps a tiny stretch?

How much torque are you making? How much understeer is acceptable to you? That will help us help you.

Do you also want max traction or is this for drifting.

As for the brand I was considering kumho spt or yoko ES100s. I would like to have good traction but not be a pig if I want to take it to the track.

235/40s will be better. The 45s are too tall IMO

^^^ Word.
On the 9s, run a 235/40 and on the 8's, run a 225/45.

235/40 on a 9? The point of wide rims are wider tires, I think Speedy was referring to 235/40 in the front.

You are right, wider rims for wider tires. Up to a point however. One of the benefits of a wider wheel is to be able to run a wider tire at the same time as gaining a stiffer sidewall. Too wide a tire will negate that benefit.
I run 235/40 on 9s all around. Perfect. Very square sidewall with my Cooper Zeon tires. Other brands will sit a little bit differently. Such as the ES100s I have in back right now, sit a little bit pulled.
Revat's size suggestion is SPOT on in my opinion.

245/40 wouldn't hurt. but i also don't understand 235 on the rears if you want to maximize traction.
Boostin240sx, is this on an s14?
