View Full Version : Question about the Bosch Platinums....

I bought these because I needed new plugs and I'm cheap. The regular platinums. Number 4201.

Each plug comes with an extra little tip, the end that snaps into your plug wires. I'm pretty sure the ones on the plug are 10mm, and the extra tips are 12.5mm. What is the difference, and which would be better to run?

Also, I checked and they have a .044 gap. Is this cool for my stock '92 DOHC?

Thanks.

Stock gap on KA24DE according to FSM is 1-1.1mm

Throw those shitass Bosch plugs away and buy NGKs. Nothing else works right on a KA.

^hehe, well like I said I'm poor, so I'm gonna at least try and use them, hopefully nothing catastrophic happens. lol

So should I make the gap a bit smaller? And what about the extra, longer "tip"? Thanks.

NGKs cost less than Bosch in most cases. You sure you're poor, and not just ignorant?

^Honestly, I think you sound ignorant coming off so uppity. I appreciate that you are trying to help, but you really didn't even asnwer my question at all.

FYI, none of the local auto stores had any NGK's, so I had to settle for the Bosche. The Bosche were not my first choice.

If you have a Checker or Kragen they carry NGKs...

NGK BKR5E11's ftw...

What would the drawback of running the Bosche be? is it really that bad that I should just throw them out? I can understand if they are not ideal, just didn't think it was that big a deal.

I have a friend that runs Bosche Platinum 4's in his '95 for awhile and hasn't had any issue or complaints.

if you're not running any strong performance parts, and just regular stock
stuff. Then bosch is okay, just spark plugs on a completely stock engine isn't
going to add like 5hp or take away 5hp.(it could if they are old). gap should be between .039-.044

More like experienced, but I'll let your mistake slide.
Seriously, I've put plugs in a over a hundred KAs, on the average they just run better, get better mileage, and turn less emissions running NGKs. On some I've actually seen the run like total ass on Autolites or AC Delcos, and the Bosch Platinum series line of plugs are simple overhyped. +2s and +4s don't give any more spark if there isn't any more coming from the coil. It's marketing BS.
But if you must use them, use the smaller cap.

^Thanks for those responses, that is exactly the help I was looking for.

For the record, I didn't get the Bosche +2 or +4, I just got the regular Bosche Platinums, they were like $2 a pop. I didn't get them for added performance, I just needed a tune up and I live in a small-ass town and there were no NGK's. It was either the AC Delco or Bosche, so I opted for the Bosche.

I will be sure to go to whatever lengths to get the NGK's next time. I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

is that NGK parts code for stock ka24de? Because I know some people prefer to run one or two step colder for turbo.

Yeah thats for stock KA. IIRC some people like to use the BKR6E11's, but the FSM calls for the 5E11's....

My comments for everybody, and especially Zesty.

1) I wouldn't get into it with Russ, aka. R240NA if I were you. You may not like his attitude, but you have a lot to gain if you just look at the information he gives. He has a lot of experience with these cars, and can be a valuable resource if you let him.

2) Go to zeroyon.com and download the FSM. Your question about gap could have easily been answered. You could have spotted this in the FSM.

3) I also don't recommend Bosch. Return them if you can. If no one locally stocks NGK (which I find extremely hard to believe, but okay), you can get it online. Shipping is a few bucks at most. If you're too poor for that, you need to get a(nother) job. Or you can call NGK to find a local store that carries them near you.

^I appreciate your reply. I also appreciate what you guys are trying to do. I see that NGK is the recommended plug. I tried to get them and they were unavailable, so I went with the cheapest alternative, which was the basic Bosche Platinums @$2.30/each. My car has 211,000 miles, and I'm sure the Bosche will at least be better than the current plugs. I will be sure to get the NGK's at any length next time. This time I will take my chances with the Bosche.

Also,FYI, I live in the country outside a small town, and do not even have the option to get DSL, and I have tried to download the FSM but it was impossible on my computer. I downloaded it at my buddies house, but I just don't have the resources to go over there anytime I have something to ask.

I have respect for everybody and just asked a simple question, I welcome all constructive criticism. I just asked a simple question and now I have the answer so everything is cool. No one is getting into anything, other than trying to get their car running better, or learn something new.

Just out of curiosity, what would the bigger tip be for?
