Yo YO yO watsup y'all.
I got an s13 with an sr20det redtop and i have a problem...tried asking around, even called black trax and Aki wasnt even sure.
I was driving and suddenly my car started running really rough...started backfiring and blowing farts (little small ones and *POP POP!!!* loud ones). So i thought id keep driving maybe its just running a little rich and maybe ittll go away after my car warms up. But then i was on the expressway, going about 50mph, and then suddenly i heard a loud explosion! thougth i blew my engine but my car was still driving...but on 3 cylinders. I parked, opend my hood and found that my second cylinder spark plug fried and shot right out of my head and dented my hood!!! HAS THIS HAPPEND TO ANYONE?? OR DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHATS WRONG??
this is actually the second time that this has happend. First time it happend i just replaced the spark plug and then it was driving super fine for about 6 months...now this...

sorry to tell you this but you have stripped the threads in the head for your spark plugs. You will need to take your head off and put in a heli-coil. You probably cross threaded your spark plugs while puting them in or you over tightened them the first time. You just got lucky that the spark plug you put in the second time lasted as long as it did. Good luck

how much would a job like this cost if i stripped the threads??

You would have to talk to your ''local'' shop for prices, But a good shop might not have to pull the head. by running a ''tap'' with bering grease packed on it , it will collect what metal shaving it makes, on it. Than they can screw in the heli coil in, back in bisnuess. GOOD LUCK

don't let any shop do it with the head on the car!!! If they say they can don't let them... You can take the head off your self or have a friend do it. Are you willing to risk aluminum shavings in your combustion chamber. You may get lucky and they will just leave via the exhaust valve and chip up the exhaust turbine in your turbo. Or better yet you may end up with a chunk of aluminum between your piston and cylinder wall. If it was me(being a technician) I would do it right and take the head off. No offense NIK90s13 I have heard of this being done, but you always run the risk of not catching all of the shavings in the bearing grease.

besides the threads being worn off, is there any other reasons why a spark plug may shoot up like that?? compression problems perhaps?? Im pretty sure it is the threads but i just wanna make sure.

u need to be punched in the head!!! it blew out because it had no good threads to hold on to. when the spark plug ignited teh fuel in the cylinder the spark plug could no longer stay in place and teh explosion in teh cylinder finally shot the plug out!!!! and the explosion u heard was teh ignited fuel/exhaust comming through the spark plug "hole"!!!
damn that was easy!!!!
have fun taking that head off. dont ruin it ;)

buy another set of spark plugs, then measure them. Or have the parts store measure them & get the helicoil for you.

yup what krustindumm said. It should come as a set with a tap to make threads for the helicoil....a helicoil is basically a threaded spring. You tap the original hole to the size of the helicoil...thread in the helicoil...then thread in your spark plug... to prevent this from happening to your other 3 spark plugs..1. apply Anti-Seize to the threads of your spark plug 2. to prevent cross threading a) don't use your ratchet to start them b) i always twist them to the left until you feel the first thread drop down then turn in c)they should twist in by hand a good portion of the way d)tighten via the instructions on the box
if i have time tomorrow i will take some pictures on how to install a helicoil

its not a matter of knowing less its a matter of understanding. its pretty obvious to me. u jus arent experienced enough to know when some thing is stripped. if u cant tell that then idk....but have fun taking that head off. more complex hehe....sux. i'd hate to be in your shoes.
but have fun and b more careful.
