I am having a problem and I need help. My car is a 1992 240sx 5speed and when I try to crank it the starter makes a grinding noise but it is not making contact with the flywheel. (the engine is not turning over) I tried another starter and it made a whistling noise, almost like a turbo, and didn't contact the flywheel either. I spent the whole day with my friend disconnecting the transmission, inspecting everything and when we put it all back together it is doing the same exact thing. What can cause this, I am desperate for a solution.

Both starters are most likely defective. If the starter spins, but doesn't engage, the soilenoid is bad(second one).

It's always best to compare the new and old starters side by side, to make sure they're not different.

Both of the starters worked in the cars they were pulled from.

Were they manual or auto?

Both starters were from manual cars and went to a manual car.

check your battery. Sometimes its strong enough to spin the starter, but not throw out the mechanism to engage the flywheel. Often times you'll hear a sound similiar to what your hearing. Try tossing in a new battery out of a working car, see what happens.
