getting my car repainted soon..its white now..but will be black...

my question reffers to detailing..specifically the painting of the engine bay..

do bodyshops usually charge an arm and a leg for this to be done?...what are peoples experience with it?..also..should i trust a body shop to really extract my engine/tranny from my car and reinstall it?..is this a job that is recomended done on my own?

Short answer ...Yes. As far as letting a bodyshop extract your motor and trans...I would say it would depend on the shop. Maco...Nope, Gamboas...Maybe. Think of this though, you will be paying a premium labor rate for maybe not so premium labor.

I would say definately paint all the jambs and as far as the engine bay yoiu could choose to paint it but it might be more money than what it is worth. If you don't really show off your engine you might want to skimp on this. Although remeber you have to pay to look nice

The only way to get a TRULY complete paint job is to deliver the chassis on a flatbed to the paint shop, totally stripped. Like, no wheels, no drivetrain, no interior, nothing.

Anything short of that, and you're going to have incomplete paint, just depends on HOW incomplete.

For me, the only decision would be between exterior-only (only for same-color repaint) and fully stripped.

Thats what I was about to say but there is no shame in having the engine bay unpainted, Most body shops in certain parts of socal that do good work wont do that extra stuff it cuz they have to many drifters with F**ed up 240's to take care of Lol. And not to mention its too much work to paint everything but none the less if you want all new paint all over the chassis its going to cost you.

Why not just get it painted white? When you change the color of a car you change the resale value, and not for the better, usually.

Like WanganRunner said, the only way to get a complete color change is to deliver the body completely stripped. Otherwise, you will have an incomplete color change, and that definately lowers the resale value.

Just go pick out a beautiful white color, it doesn't even have to be the same white, and go paint it that way. You can just get a body spray and be super happy. Go look at the Cadillac color pallete, they always seem to have a bajillion different shades of white, and they all look good.

changing shades of color works well without having to change your engine bay color.
As far as painting goes, I have come to realize that these cars and even my car are not show cars. They are used daily and or tracked as well. Truth of that is get a decent paint job, but do not go crazy on the paint. Unless your planning on turning your car into a carpet queen i.e. show car, you should not go overboard.
In my case the body shop I use will do a $1500 glass out job for me which is perfect.

keep in mind guys this is not for a bling factor..i simply want to stop rust on whatever parts i can get a hold of...it doesnt have to match, thats why im asking if its a job i can easily do myself..

there are just some rust spots i;d like to get tackled before my engine bay gets holes eaten away by it eventually haha

For what you're looking for, you can take care of it. And you will probably to a beter job than you think.

I agree with painting your car the same color, maybe a different shade. For example, my red 240 needs paint, I was gonna go with the G35 red. The engine bay remains red, so when you pop the hood it won't look wierd.

my car is red and my engine has turned maroon over the years :(
