I took my valve cover off to look at the upper chain guide cause something is clunking on startup and at idle and i thought it might be hte culpret. Well the bolts holding it are still tight but i can easily push the chain up onto it as there is only 1-3mm clearance between them. Should i go ahead and remove the guide? Or should i leave it on? Thanks!

from what i understand, nissan has stated that the upper timing guide is unessary.  i removed mine when i broke my valve cover bolt, the valvlifterish noise went away, but somehow it came back... i guess my engine is about to blow up...

yes..  remove it.  It does nothing but sit there ominously waiting to destroy your beautiful engine~!

Get rid of it! Talked to the techs up at the dealer and they said that it doesn't do anything.

Pull it out, after a while it will break off at the base and just rattle around there for a little while untill it falls somewhere important and kills shit. Irena's and mine both broke off at the base (luckily we got them out before the shit hit the fan, or cams in this case <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>)
