I am Researching an S13 240SX SR20DET swap, and I am hung up on the emissions part. Has anyone performed this swap and tried to get it registered? Will it pass smog? I have heard that it wont due to the 4-coil ignition, becuase the US one is a dual coil. Thanks,
Joey

well, iirc, japanese smog regulatoins are rather strict, and, as such the car should have no problem passing smog however, the motor was never epa certified, so getting a swapped vehicle inspected by anyone who knows anything about nissans would be out after the visual inspection (at least for a normal fee)

Correct the SR was never certified in the US and the stock SR can pass the sniffer but you will not pass the visual.

And please no one bring up "duh why can't someone get the motor certified."

Does anyone know what is involved in geting the motor certified? Do you need a permit, like you do for the RB26DETT? (hopefully that wasn't the same as "duh why can't someone get the motor certified?")

MotoRex will get your SR20DEt certified for $3000. Its up to you most people feel that is to expensive .Though once you have a car with a CARB legal exemption which means it will pass on sniffer and they will give you a smog cert,it becomes worth quite a bit of money in resale value to enthusiasts at least here in SoCal.

I live in oregon though. I have heard that we have a little bit looser laws on emmisions and registering. Plus, it would cost closer to 4 grand after shipping, and thats just absurd. Is there anyone in a state other than california that has legalized this swap? Or anyone other than drift freaq that has done it in cali? Thanks guys!

ok, here goes:
unless you get a jspec motor certified by the EPA it \will not be legal
that is not to say that you cannot get it inspected by someone who doesn't know his head from his @$$ about your car but it will not be legal

from what i have heard, many people are able to pay a little extra to get a worry free sticker...

MotoRex has not certified that motor....they WERE gonna do it but found it not to be worth their time and money. I'm friends with the guys there and they have not had the motor certified.

It just cost too much money...basically the way the US regulation works each SR must be certified.s13/s14/s15 AND each chassie silvia/180sx AND each year or each body style. Basically they would have to do like 20+ batches. Also the STP (SMOG) regulation test would cost about $1500 each motor.

And since MotoRex is the company doing the certification they must be the company to install the motor(stipulated by certification laws).....so basically if MotoRex did certify the motor you are looking at ALOT of money.

Blame the US legal system on this.

If you are in Oregon you should be able to get away with a lot. I wouldn't even worry about it as long as you are not in Portland. I know Eugene doesn't do crap as far as smog.

Thanks Rotary Knight, that is very reassuring. I live in hillsboro. It is like 20 minutes west of portland, and there are only like 4 people in the local DEQ station at any given time, and I bet none of them know all that much about nissans. The common thing around here is huge trucks with 44's on them. Next is old hot rod chevy's. I have never even seen a lightly modified 240 with a KA engine around here, let alone one with an SR swap.

Yea the smaller towns in Oregon don't push SMOG regulation...it's too expensive to monitor. Most people will not know what is the difference in the motors.

I might be driving up to Oregon again to visit my lil bro UofO. Been up there twice in the last 6 mo.

ok Know that I have been misquoted and taken out of context I will restate what I said .
First off Rotary I am friends with the guys at MotoRex too. Second off, I said they can get it done. I never said they have done it or sell it.
Fact is Rotary if you go down and ask Ken about it today he will tell you that for $3000 they can get it done . Go ask him. I repeat,
I never said I have done it or they have done it!!!!!!!!!!!!
They can get your motor certified plain and simple they will charge you $3000 for the process period. That is what I said that is what they can do . They have never done it becuase no one has desired to pay the cash but they can get it done.
Rotary , you need to read my posts more carefully .

The problem isn't emissions, it is the visual that causes you to fail. Imagine Joe Booty smog guy opens up your hood and sees a big ass t3 and intercooler piping. Do you think you'll pass the first check point?

Find yourself a smog hookup and buy the guy/gal a deluxe fish dinner at Long John Silver's and dump him some cash. Stay in touch and do it every 3yrs. Better yet, spend $100 bucks and get a "escort" or hooker to tag along for the smog test, have her hit on smog dude, and offer a shabang for a certificate. He won't know she is a trick....Its has worked for me once..lol

Since when do SR20DETs come with T3's? I thought we were talking about SRs here.....maybe I'm crazy....

When I put my SR in, I'm going to paint the red top black so they won't be thinking mods when they open it up. Plus, I'm a chick....he won't think I know anything. It'll go through easy.

Yeah I spent most of my day yesterday reading posts about this topic. I didn't find one person who did it legally. They all relied on the neglegence of the DEQ inspectors, or bribery. I think I will not have too much to worry about out here. I just gotta find someone who has buddies at the deq station. How well educated are the poeple that check under your hood at the deq stations? anybody know?

Not sure what you mean by educated. But smog techs are licensed by the state of California, so certainly, they are aware of the reprecussions of providing faux smog info. I wouldn't just ask any old smog tech. Ask around, check with your friends..your mechanic.

Well...I figure that this is Dave....Motorex said to please stop spreading misinformation about them certifying the SR.

is the SR20DET legal in Canada or no?
Because I was thinking about it the past week and never knew that it was illegal in US until now
