Just thought I would post some pics of the start of my RB26 project.

The beast

I have to paint this, but man is it beautiful

I love this shot, it made my day when i first saw it

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b267/madmax670/f8774e1e.jpg

ok, when i was removing the oil "pan" (it's huge, and it's not like any other oil pan i have seen) i missed 2 real small bolts that were hidden from my view and this happened, if you cannot see, that is part of the block still attached to the screw, pulled the threads right out with it. What should I do about this?

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b267/madmax670/IMG_0069.jpg

I took off the a/c and p/s, I will not be needing either. p/s would be nice, but I didnt have it in my FD so I am used to it. I am still in the process of checking the valvetrain and turbos for signs of wear. So far it looks like I got a good engine, but I have learned not to count my chickens before they hatch. Please give me any advice you guys might have about that bolt problem, and any other tips if you have any. Also, I am still lookin for an RB25 tranny if anyone has one available.

Oh man, going from an FD to a 240 has got to be a disappointment...good luck on your project though, hope it works out well.

O damn. You might have to use a lot of thread-lock or SOMETHING. that sucks about the screws.

Have fun with the swap

might have to re-tap with a slightly bigger diameter, and find skrews matching the thread and the diameter...

Should be an awsome car when ur done.

Contack Driftfreq with any questions reguarding the swap... he KNOWS his shit. :)

+1 for retap.

helicoil (sp?) and run a die down the bolts, or retap and use bigger diameter bolts

Owning an FD was quite a headache, I actually had 2, and it was always something. Don't get me wrong, it is an extremely capable car and engine, I love the 13B-REW, but in my particular case, the FD just made me too worrysome. The RB26 has just as much if not more potential, and the 240 isn't a dog in corners at all. The only real disappointment for me is the looks, I would rather look at an FD than a beautiful woman, absolutely beautiful body lines.

I will update with more pictures as soon as I make some more progress.

What is "helicoil"?

I know that feeling, I'll be moving my FD from the stable in order to improve my standard of living and it saddens me. However, at the same time it is a relief as the car is worrysome. I'm not concerned about the reliability so much as I am other people, I cant park it and not be freaked out that somethimg may happen to it. I feel better with the 240sx, the driver ergonomics are similar and as you stated, power and handling arent too far apart between the two. Look-wise he FD is a creature that may never have a competitor, it was truely crafted as more of an art peice than a car. lol

What is "helicoil"?

This is the best example of a Helicoil I could locate.

You pretty much redrill the hole, tap it for a larger size and use a threaded coil to thread it in so it'd match with the original specs. I done this many times to stripped threads. Works great but it's kind of pricey sometime.

I agree the FD is quite the head tuner, but u FD owners gotta spend more time with your GF's...

I just realized you have the Trans-Axle as well, it'd be godly to have the subframe modified and have custom half-shafts made to make an AWD 240sx.

Yea, it's nice to have a back seat and a trunk as well, not to mention getting in and out is comparable to the struggle a chick has to go through to get out of its egg.

I don't have to bring it to a place to do this, do I? If not, where can I get these helicoils?

you can pick one up at most autoparts stores. I would rather just retap the hole. If you already have the shit out of the car you might as well. I am sorry but i don't know your mechanical ability(i am not trying to be a dick), but i would seriously rethink trying to swap an rb26 into your 240 if you don't know something as retapping a hole or using a helicoil. just my $.02

u could try retappin it, but helicoil is good also...... uc an get a helicoil kit from napa... comes with a tap.. just find the right drill bit...

Is anyone else using drift freaq's kit? It looks like i may be one of the first few guinea pigs

Well it looks like my engine is good. I popped off the valve covers today and saw no visible signs of wear on the cams. There was no shaft play at all in the turbos.

Anyone know what sensor this is, I am guessing AIT, and if I can get a replacement?

Iam using driftfreaqs kitand it is awesome also dave and gary from syco are so helpful they have healped me out a bunch of times with no problem here is a pic of my set up. and if i was you i would helicoil it isnt that hard i striped the bolts that hold the tranny cross member and had to helicoil it. came out fine on the first time i had ever tried it. anyways good luck with the swap. http://images.snapfish.com/346475%3A99%7Ffp336%3Enu%3D3262%3E398%3E%3B73%3EWS NRCG%3D323346%3C%3B78%3B25nu0mrj

Hey MadMax,
The sensor is the IAT(intake air temp). As for replacement parts, contact Drift Freaq--he should be able to source most RB parts.

In addition to what has been posted, I'd recommend doing a leak-down test if it hasn't already been done. This will tell you a lot about the condition of your engine. If a leak-down tester is not available, checking compression is the next best thing. Also, since you have the pan off, inspect the bottom for any metal shavings. Hope this info helps.
