well, thief didn't steal my cars, but rather, they took my gf's money out of her bank account. The situation here is that my gf checked her online account balance, and realized there were four unauthorized charges came out of her debit card / ATM card. the transaction was date this past Saturday, when we were at home most of the time. DAMN THIEF took money out from a Bank of America ATM (fuck, they are located in east coast and west coast, NOT in the midwest). So, we are fucking pissed right now - fucking thief, steal from the rich, don't steal from the poor. hard earned money got stolen :(
Now here's the question, what can we do at this point? Could the transaction be voided by the bank (as an ATM/Debit card)? What are our chances here...
the issue has been reported, and now we are going to the bank tomorrow to dispute/resolve this thing... over $300 dollars.... FUCK.....

i think this is something you should talk to the bank/police about

and for those of you who banks with Bank of America, anyone could help me "decode" this:
WFLN1636 and SFLD0130?
I am thinking it must be ATM locations, but I wasn't sure where exactly did the transaction happened?

What issuing bank is the card from? Most large ones have a policy where you won't get charged for unauthorized transactions.
EDIT: So it's a B of A card. I'm pretty sure they have that policy. Good luck!

actually my gf's ATM car was from Indiana Univ. Credit Union (small credit union based off the Univ.), the unauthorized charges were from a BOA ATM machines... I dunno. we are going to the bank tomorrow to personally dispute the charges, and we will be visiting the police as well.
It is extremely hard/sad that we got hit in the end of month when we are trying to save up for the summer.
Damn thief ...

I have the exact same question... if they used it on the East or West coast, and you guys live in Indiana, how did they get ahold of her PIN? Hmm..

that's something we weren't sure at this point.
We use the ATM/Debit card at the grocery store often, and we don't go to the ATM often at all. All I could think off are:
1. Debit card info (with Pin) stole/intercepted at grocery store
2. Debit card info (with Pin) stole from the Bank itself...
I REALLY HOPE it is just some stupid misc. bank error... I am now calling BOA to get the ATM location.
Thanks.

just got off the phone with BOA:
WLFN1636 -- located in St. Petersburg, FL
SFLD0130 -- located in Tampa, FL
I think that's as much as evidence as I could get at this point.
EDIT: and I am in Indiana. I doubt my gf and I travelled to FL this past weekend - I was posting like a whore on Zilvia

ALL ATM's have security camera's. The banks have all the tapes. They also know what time the transactions took place. MUG SHOTS!!

Some people have been caught spray painting the camera windows and getting away with the money afterwards, but the camera from above caught everything. :bowrofl:
Hope everything gets figured out. Oh and the most common way people get PIN numbers is by placing a camera above the atm machine looking down on the keypad. As for the card, I've heard of people putting their own readers inside the reader itself that memorizes the account number. And other cases, there is just another camera looking down at the card slot as well as the keypad.
Hmmm if only they put their intelligence to something that will help people, not screw them.

Same thing happend to me. I found out that they had copied my card and PIN right at my branch ATM. They used a small scanner to read the card that fit over the card slot (it was like 1/8 inch thick), and a keypad with a small memory unit overlayed over the original keypad to record the PIN. After they were caught, the police showed me the stuff. They had done the same thing to about 40-50 people from my bank alone, and withdrew all the money the same night from the accounts.
A good idea is to use cash whenever possible, and always look at the machine when you use it (debit or ATM) and if it looks broken, tampered with or just unusual, don't pay with debit...wait if you can, or borrow from a friend if you can. It can save your money.
Good luck getting your money back, find all the ways you can to prove it was not you taking out the money, and don't take no for an answer. I got all mine back eventually. If it was the banks security on your account, or their equipment, that was defeated...they're liable.

thank you all the info, advice and suggestions.
Mod (ThatGuy), may I request my log information from May 22 - 24th so I can at least prove the bank that I was physically in Indiana (just in case they ask me and my gf) Should I PM you with the detail?
thank you!

I think that sometimes you can run a debit card as a credit card and avoid using a PIN alltogether.

Is it a debit card or an ATM card? They are similar, but not the same
Take a look at this info, it should help:

This should have gone with my post above; but I accidently deleted it before I posted.
That link is about what to do if cards are stolen or lost but it should have some info about your legal rights, claims info and when, how and who to make them to. Hope it helps.

a couple years ago someone used my debit card to buy like $200 worth of stuff online. i went to my bank and filed a dispute. they temporarily gave me my money back, and when they determined those transactions were in fact unauthorized, they let me keep the money. not hard. simple.

easy way to prevent this from happening is to cover up the keypad when typing in your pin. I usually just cover the keypad with my left hand and i punch in numbers with my right hand. Even if the thieves get your card number, their chances of actually charging your card will be reduced somewhat.

PIN data is stored in the mag stripe of the card. So, because of this, all you need is one unauthorized swipe of the card, to get the full mag stripe info, plug it into a decoder, then re-write another card and access the money.
The best protection you can afford you'reself is to have two account systems.
Saving+checking high risk kit, only put money for immediate purchases in this account with NO overdraft availability.
Subsavings+savings+checking low risk kit, keep you're money in you're subsavings. Keep low ammounts of money in the savings and checking.
If you use a co-op credit union, they have a 24/7/365 telephone # to access you're money from the sub-savings.
And make sure you have NO Overdraft availablity on any thing. Overdraft is = to the worst loan you have ever taken out, + a very high security risk.
MagStripe is cool, but REALLY old tech, basically the same as 8 track, and cassetes, soon will be phased out for microwave energized Radiofrequency chips. Master card just introduced it, and if you have a "HID" badge for you're workplace, this uses the same technology. By 2012 all US Drivers licences will also have RF chip technology, accesable up to 7 feet away! Better keep youre licence in good order, or else you're getting pulled over.
Im really sorry to hear about the Theif, people who do this crap are just low life scammers, and you will get you're money back, it is FDIC insured.

friends, here's a quite rundown on the update:
we were at the bank for half an hour.
we are getting our money back ($360) without much of questioning. It has happened to other customers in the bank, and the bank has insurance on this type of stuffs. so, money should be credited to my gf's account in the next couple days or so.
thanks again for all the advice/suggestions/comments.
you guys rule.

Glad to hear it's going to work out. Sorry I didn't sign back on in time to answer your other questions. You can request anything you like from the bank regarding your account. I doubt they would fork over the video, but they could at least verify it wasn't you or your GF on the tape at the time of the transaction. It's not neccesary at this point, as they have decide to handle it as is.
