Background:
I just bought a 1992 240sx 5-speed yesterday with 73,300 miles on it. Seemed like it needed a tune-up so I did one. Replaced the fuel filter (purolator), plugs with NGK V-Power, air filter (purolator), and did an oil change. I used Valvoline Max Life 5W-30 and a Purolator Pue One oil filter. Now I say all this to help diagnose this noise that developed today.
Problem:
I had just driven the car about 100 miles. I hadn't driven it too hard on the way down, only made one quadruple pass at 70mph on a 45mph road. Once I hit my destination it was off for three hours. When I take off for the first time I got this loud pinging from the engine when the rpms reached 2500rpm. The pinging range is different for each gear, but mainly between 2500-3500rpm, but only when you accellerate, or let off between these rpms. In 4th and 5th gear at these rpms it isn't real noticeable.
Thoughts:
Now the main simple cause that I would like to believe is the fact that I was using 89 octane for 2 tankfulls (didn't read the manual) and on the second fillup I used fuel injector cleaner. I'm running 93 now after that last tank of 89 got down to 1/4 tank. I drove it for 17 miles and the noise didn't go away.
The second simple cause is a clogged lifter. When I put the oil in during my oil change the intake cams looked kinda cruddy. The valvoline maxlife I used is for higher mileage engines (75,000+) to help strengthen seals. Could this have caused a sticky valve or lifter?
Third thought is a junk timing guide or tensioner. What baffles me is why the pinging would start only after the car was off for three hours.
Does anyone know what I should do?
Thanks,
Ryan
