My Spec stage 3 clutch recently started making a metal on metal squeak when i start rolling or shift gears in while going slow.....usually only makes the noise when i start slow.. when i take off faster then normal, or shift fast, there is no sound.. any one know what this might be...the clutch is fairly new,4-5 months and not driven that hard..no drifting or racing also.
pls help i dont wanna pay 300 bucks to open the tranny when it could be something simple...
FYI... Black top 96 SR20DET
spec stage 3 clutch.

are you saying in certain circumstances, when you hold the clutch pedal down, you hear a metal on metal noise? that's probably the throw out bearing. it's a cheap fix, but you need to drop the transmission.

if you are saying you hear a metal on metal noise when your clutch is engaged and you are coasting at low speed, that could be something internal to the transmission. alternatively, you could just have something rubbing on a brake rotor, a loose heat shield rattling around that you can't hear at higher speeds, etc.

No, its when Iv'e almost completely depressed the clutch right when its starts moving... (it makes a low squeak) ive had a throw out bearing go bad before..it was completely destroyed...and it didnt make that sound...its when ii start accelerating and the clutch is almost all the way out...
I thought the clutch might be slipping on the Fly W. but if it was then it would slip when i started fast too right? (but it doesnt):tweak: driving me crazy!!
thx for the quick reply by the way!

i've been told that if you hear a noise as you the clutch pedal is moving up (i.e. when you first start moving) then it could be a bad pilot bearing. i haven't experienced this myself though.

if its coming from inside the car, it could just be this little piece on the clutch pedal itself. when it goes, it makes a high pitched squeaky noise as the clutch moves in and out.

YEa. you might be right about the pilot bearing.. (its not from inside the car.. comes from under.../clutch itself)

It might be from the belts also, as I've had this problem for the last year or so.

It doesn't do it every clutch slip in 1st though, sometimes it won't squeak.

It seriously does sound like a slipping belt, but I've only replaced the alternator/waterpump belt. I'll take the other 2 belts off to see if it'll make a difference or not, if not, then damnit, time to drop the tranny and take the clutch off for some pilot bushing action.

I have a Spec Stage 3 (newer 6puck version) in my KA, and It's been making the squeek for about 30k miles.

It does it the most for me between 3rd and 4th, but does it from 2nd to 3rd...just not as loud.

oh, and the pilot bushing noise is really loud, the ka trucks do it alot, and mine does it when its really cold out. The pilot bushing starts spinning with the input shaft, making a really loud sqeek/vibration when the clutch is depressed.

Well, there's no vibration in the clutch pedal when I slip it.

Oh, mine's an old version SPEC Stage 3 clutch, 6 puck. Got it like 3 years ago, still grabs like a mofo right now.

And here's some food for thought.

I broke in the clutch as they had recommended. Actually a little more than what they have recommended in that little sheet of paper that came with the clutch.

I drove 500 city miles before beating on it.

Sometime last year, I did a burn out on my old tires just before I had some Yoko ES100 put on, and after the burn out, I drove around with no more squeaks for like the rest of the drive home. Next day, squeak was back.

I'm wondering if the squeak is from the actual compound of the pucked disks rubbing on the pressure plate or the flywheel surface?

LOL.. well i guess it might not be a serious problem then..
seams more normal then i thought...
...It never seamed to affect the performance...i was just worried.. and yes..It could very well be the rubbing against the flywheel.. i thought of that too...

sounds like a bearing, not the clutch itself
