yep as perdicted by many ppl, yesterday was the final day with the original tranny. took the car out to test some adjustment i made with the gap of the spark pplugs. i was only using 17-18psi when i notice that it started to grind when i put the car in third and first. also when i accelerated it would sometimes pop out of gear. then it happened, third gear just made a loud grind noise as it poped out of gear and i then had the car in neutral. the shifter would not more around in neutral accept for going into fourth. so i had to drive the car home in only fourth gear(sucked so bad). good thing i bought that spare tranny. so that is what i will be doing tonight. PUTTING IN A NEW TRANNY IN.
words from the wise: always keep a spare tranny at home
Good thing you have the daily driver <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
How much hp (or torque if they measure tranny's in that) can the stock tranny hold? Is there anything you can do to make them stronger?

well there is a couple things u can do, which i am going to do when i rebuild my bad tranny, but cant really explain it. i will try though:
1.couple weld point on the housing that can be made to strengthen the housing if the internals ever break apart(i would have to take pics and show later)
2.take the gears and get then specially treated(dont know the word for it) which stengthen the synchros and gears.
3.all ball-bearings be replaced by custom titaniam ball bearinggs,to withstand major pressure loads when accelerating
4. mainshaft be heat treated so stress and loud puton by the motor.
i would have to say that the stock tranny can hold up to a max of 450hp. although i was not pushing that at all when i blew it.

I messed up a saturn sc2 tranny before.. there were pieces that fell out on the bottom but I could still put in gears, the car would just not go anywhere..
boosted, what part of the tranny gave away? did it break from age or what??

well i havent taken apart yet but i assume because the syncros let go. as for the housing, no it did not crack and it is not leaking any tranny fluid.
it broke because of power, too much of it too many times. i really shock the tranny when the boost hits hard, plus from shifting fast with a stage 4 clutch can really do the job

Hey, Jeff
Its called cryo-treating and you can look it up online. There are many sites, and when I go for serious boost, I will be sending mine out. With a quote of $175 for a taken apart tranny out of a place in Tampa or Orlando, FL, that seems to be a great investment.
They also say that it is stronger than forged items, so possibly a $80 piston and rod job would work wonders for the stock stuff and be good for aftermarket things too.
Just a thought.

or you could get a real race tranny, custom made to your specs...saw a site somewhere about it. Lowest price for a 5-spd non-synchro: $6k <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>
