Ok helped my buddy do his clutch and we we having a bummer of a time pulling the pilot shaft bushing out of the crank, so I ran down to my shop and built this.

First took the 3/4" NC tap and cut some threads into the bushing, then threaded the tool in and whammo pulled it right out. Too cool.

Nice.. so that threads into the bushing? You of course destroyed it right?
I drilled the fuck out of mine until it collapsed due to weak structural integrity and a rubber mallot.

that's neat, but heavy grease and a clutch alignment tool is the easiest !

Care to elaborate on that method?
Pack with grease and pound in the tool and hope it slips out?
That's hella messy.

yeah exactly. I spent hours trying to get mine out and was quite delighted when it came right out with a good wack to the alightment tool. The tool fits into the pilot bearing pretty snug, and I used some heavy bearing grease to pack it. I have heard about some people not succeeding with this method, but it's definately the easiest, so give it a try first.

I had a cheaper version of hook style puller, but his bushing was so worn it could not get a hold on the back to pull out. So I had the tap and presto she was out. I thought about the greese method, but the pilot toll was sloppy on the worn bushing, and I didnot want to turn the crank into a High power greese gun...lol

wow this seems ingenious. what is that tool you built and how did you do it? it looks like a rod with some treads on it. but ill defintely try tapping the pilot bushing next time and running to orchard to get a thick bolt to thread into and pull out.
before, i use to struggle with the pilot bearing.. rented the pb remover from kragen and that shit just keeps slipping. the grease trick didnt work.. the only way i been able to take them out was to grind one of the sides of the pb until it got weak and took it out.

Tool is very simple I welded a short piece of 3/4" all thread to a 3/8" rod with a slide hammer weight on it. I welded washers to the 3/8" rod for the hammer to impact and pull the bushing out. If you do not weld you could drill and tap the 3/4" all thread to fit on your slide hammer.

could also use some 3/8" all thread with a couple nuts on one end and slide over anything heavy.

just go rent the PB removal tool at autozone make sure you rent the slide hammer as well...got it out in 20 secs..... easy!!!!! but to put it in is the real bitch... till the day i question if i put it in correctly!! :) Greased it, and wacked it in witha socket(rubber mallet just didnt do! kept fallin out), then i lightly filed it, cause it mushroomed a bit, aligment tool didnt slide in (that means neither will the input shaft!!)

Get a fucking drill/dremel and mutilate it until it comes out in broken pieces. I had to do this on a friends engine.
Miy own clutch swap went rather smooth with the Kragen Pilot Bushing tool.
When you tap the bushing back in, only push it in slightly, if you hit it too many times they bushings edges flatten and the diameter of the bushing decreases and you cant fit an allignment tool.
