I hate how Nissan chose to do the "timing pin" on the KA24DE. This makes it, for me at least, very difficult to line up with the timing marks on the crank pulley... Resulting in sloppy, innaccurate timing :bash:. Some of my other vehicles have used a much better system of floating a "pointer" a few mm above the crank pulley, like this:

So that got me to thinking of how I could make something similar for my KA. I figured out a very quick and inexpensive way to rig a temporary "pointer" to the timing pin. I've never seen this posted anywhere else, so I thought I would share with you guys. So if you've had problems with the timing setup on your KA, feast your eyes on this masterpiece of ingenuity...

Hehehe, it actually works pretty well! Take one of the little 3" zip ties and cut it so it's only about 1.25" long. Tie it around the pin and align it so it points straight at the bolt holding the crank pulley on. Trim the excess off the end so it doesn't actually touch the crank pulley or belts as they spin. Make sure it's tied tightly onto the pin so it doesn't flap around from wind from the radiator fans, and position it at the very end of the pin to align with the marks on the pulley.
I chose to remove spark plug #1 and use a screwdriver to set the engine to TDC then aligned the end of the ziptie pointer with the 0' timing mark on the pulley. Put the spark plug back in, start the car, disconnect the TPS, give her a few revs, set your idle at 650ish rpm and time away! Of course you can just remove it when you're done, it will slide right off the pin.
