i get this grinding noise wen i start up my car and in all but my 4th gear. but wen stopped, if i step on the clutch all the way it stops. as i slowly let it go...it slowly gets louder n more grinding.
i thought i had to change tranny oil but didnt make anything better.
could it just be that my clutch is bent someway n touching the flywheel?
please help!
thanks in advance

Throw out bearing (IIRC, b/n the shifter area and clutch - can't visualize it just now).

Replace your tranny and diff fluid first.
How old is the clutch?

So it doesn't do it in 4th, but does in 5th? This is hard to wrap my head arround because if it's something in the transmission it shouldn't stop just because you push in the clutch, because the tranny is still turning. If it was something with the clutch assembly why would it stop in only 4th gear?

i changed my diff oil, tranny oil, and engine oil. noise was still there. the mechanic there told me to just replace the clutch cuz it was touching and since everytime i shift up the clutch gets farther n farther from the flywheel (?) so the noise gets less loud. but then back to it not making noise in 4th but making it again in 5th confuses me. i dont wanna spend $300+ on a clutch if thats not the prob.
the clutch was changed about 2 weeks b4 i bought the car. however he had gotten in a little nasty accident with it. problem is...i dont know if the noise started after i got hte car or before.
if anyone knows where i could get a clutch for CHEAP in so cal PM me or email me please!!!

Since the search is down here, you might head over to FA and do one in Advanced 240sx. I know we have covered the throwout (T/O) bearing issue here before in about February where a good explaination of the symptom and problem was discussed.
From what you've described, that sound like the perfect culprit. T/O bearings outlast clutches, but seem to go at about 100-140K. They *should* be replaced w/ the clutch, but many don't read the instructions and skip the pilot and T/O bearing replacement. I'd wager money that is your problem.
