So I recently have posted a few things for sale on freshalloy, zilvia, and nico classified forums, so I'm not sure exactly which forum this individual saw me post on. Perhaps the mods could make this a sticky because I had never heard of this scam before myself, and I consider myself fairly knowledgable about internet doings and virii and whatnot...

Here is the entire email from start to finish.

Let me ask you something. Is there any way you could get me just the money I need and information about the shipping and get your client to send you the remaining $1800 instead of the client giving me $2000 and me dealing with the extra $1800?

Thanks...

Hello Justin,
Thanks for your mail I really appreciate it. Well as soon as you have receive the payment then you have deducted your goods amount and you will send me the remaining balance MoneyGram. Well, MoneyGram is just a way of sending money around the world and more reliable here in the United Kingdom. I hope you have understand my explanation now. So I hope you can just forward me your full name and address that the Money Order will be send to........ I will like to hear from you as soon as possible.
Thank you
Stacy.

Well I knew what you were talking about, but I just wanted to see if you could just get me the $200 for the valve springs and have your guy send the $1800 directly to you himself. To be honest I just don't feel comfortable dealing with money of yours that isn't mine, so I don't see why your client can't send me $200 and MoneyGram you the $1800 he owes you himself...

Thanks again...

Hello Justin,
Please kindly help me out with this cos this is only way I can get my money back from my client in the states that oweing me. I will like to hear from you as soon as possible.
Thank you
Stacy

Justin Domer <[email protected]> wrote:

Well let me ask why this is the only way you can get the money from your client? What makes it impossible for your client to send the money to you via MoneyGram just like me?

This sounds very shady and makes no sense at all...

Hello Justin,
Well, My client wants to pay through U.S.P.S MONEY ORDER and then is not cashable in here in the United Kingdom. It cashable only in the states. I hope you have understand this now?
Thank you
Stacy

So then I sent:

Ok that is fine... Just tell your client since a usps money order is not cashable in the United Kingdom then he/she can just send it to you moneygram instead and wouldn't even have to worry about getting a money order...

Thanks again...

I got no reply so then I sent:

What kind of car do you have? Are you rebuilding the engine, or just adding valvesprings? What kind of cams are you going to use? What kind of valve spring retainers and guides are you going to use? What kind of valves are you going to use?

Then I received no reply back. I did a little research and talked with some people and found out that this is a common scam. There are people in other countries who will contact people in the US and tell them they will get a money order for over the amount, and they want you to send them the extra money. I'm told sometimes they pose as models and send pictures to you and stuff like that as well. Turns out the money orders are fake/bad. So basically they expect you to deposit it into your account, then send them the extra money (in my case $1800). Then a couple weeks later (or however long it takes for it to clear (or rather for the bank to find out it is bad), then you end up screwed and now you are dealing with that extra $1800 you are now out...

Actually before I found out about this scam, I was thinking that maybe I was being involved in moving some money across borders that wasn't supposed to or something like that...

Anyway, I just wanted to let everybody know. Mods, if you want to make this sticky feel free to modify this post to make it easier to read or whatever.

Just use your noggin' and you should never have a problem, but I hear they get dumbasses like this all the time so I wanted to give a heads up...

Also, please feel free to use that email ( [email protected] - not mine ) to do whatever bad you would like. Somebody I spoke with said he could get this persons ip address just from the email and a few things and fck with them bad. I hope they get what's coming to them :p

This is a classic scam. There have been a few warning Threads about this kind of thing through EBay and such. You did a good job of compiling all the info you could. However....

This doesn't belong in the For Sale Section. Moved to Off Topic.

dude the list will go on forever. its common sence when people try to over-do their grammatical skills that something is up. I ussualy say fuk it after i get a shady responce after the first initial email -> either they are scammers or flakers. Emails like the guy recieved stand out like a bullseye (sorry for crappy analogy). Also paypal is not as safe as everyone thinks. If you get screwed via paypal and try to dispute it all it takes for the other party to come out clean is a tracking number wich they can easily attain if they send an empty box. (keep in mind paypal does not dispute item quality)
Anyways there are and always will be scams. You just have to keep a step ahead of the game so you dont get screwed

everytime i post up stuff for sale on recycler.com or craigslist.com (anything over $100 bucks) i get emails from people, with normal looking emails but they all respond with "i have a client in such and such that is interested in buying your item". i learned to just delete their emails cuz too many people with different email addresses emailing me the similiar type response to my item for sale.

another reason why i don't ship my crap out

very classic scam

rule of thumb:
1. no money order or personal check
2. no shipping to out of country
3. if it is too good to be true, than it is scam

I've been getting some funny emails from the UK, too. I'm like where did all these people come from. If I see funny emails from overseas I just delete them. I also got some funky email asking me my ebay password and ID. I knew it was a scam, but I still checked the link to see where it would take me...it took me to the ebay sign in page and then I looked at the web address and it was some funky name. I just laughed.
