View Full Version : How much HP can the Stock Diff Case handle?

Not sure if anyone asked this question before, but does anyone know how much HP a stock 1990 240 differential case can handle? I'm looking at swaping in a new motor and would like to know the limit of the stock case. Before I accidentially tear it a new one.

Thanks

More power than you'll be making(!).

You'll more likely break a trans input/output shaft, or possibly an axle (with wheel hop).

I've seen multiple +500rwhp setups, and a few closer to the ~600rwhp mark...all with stock diff housings (some VLSD, some clutch diffs).

Thanks for the info. It's good to know that the diff. housing can take the HP. I'm intending to swap the KA for a RB motor and was concerned, the next move is to figure out which LSD to go with.

Thanks again for you input.

The trannies are the weak link on our cars HP wise. You will blow up a tranny before you blow up one of our rear ends. Axles get killed too. Thats why with extreme HP its always wise to use new axles.

R200s have been used on crazy V8 Z cars forever.

Does anybody make aftermarket axles for 240s?Would be nice to have something that will hold up to 400 or 500whp just for peice of mind.

Yep, a guy I know kept breaking axels on his r2000 so he just swapped it out for a z28 rear end (he has a ls1 in his 240z)

r2000 is an awfully large ring gear.

Z28 as in a GM 9 bolt? those are weaker than R200s
or Z28 as in Nissan Z car? I'm kinda confused by that.

If axles become a major problem I think there are some GTST skyline axles that were stronger, or a company made them for the GTST and they work for S-chassis, I dont remember. I havent broken anything in my rear end.

z28 camaro rear end

I remember him saying he twisted 2 sets of axels and completely snapped a couple other. Hasn't had an issue with the new axels so far.

thats strange, those GM rear ends are not known for their ability to handle even stock power with slicks.

For your high HP Driveshaft and axle needs.

IMHO axles are the cheapest thing to break and easiest to replace in the driveline. I'd rather replace axles than any other driveline parts.
