Basically I have to replace the whole left side suspension, it sucks. Me and two of my friends were out drifting Thursday night and I hit one spot that was as slick as ice introducing the left side of my car to the curb. Bent the control arms, toe arms, tie rods, etc. I was going to order my KTS coilovers the next day too, but now I have to make sure everything can be fixed, but luckily I have a parts car to interchange everything with. I guess you live and learn, but I can't wait to get it fixed so I can drift some more!!!

keep it on the track!

its not as if you don't have a chance to break something at the track, but lessens the risk in a controlled environment, not to mention keeps you from getting sweated by the police.

I don't 100% agree with keep it on the track...but please, keep it off the curbs >_<

Just keep it within your skill level. Don't get carried away and don't lose your cool. Because when you get out of control, you crash. Then you look back at it and feel stupid as hell.

How can you keep it off the curbs? If you drift on the street hitting a curb is bound to happen.

Skill level? haha the really skilled (and wise) people keep it on the track.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like drifters are nothing more than a group of really bad drivers. Posts like this are becoming more and more common on here. Even on the track you guys break shit.

hahahhahhaha, I think what it is Russ , is the drifters fall into a couple of different catagories. Newbie young ones which equal kids just getting the hang of RWD cars and want to try drifting. More experienced ones that use some caution and don't crash much. Totally experienced ones that are into pushing it hard as possible. Now you here the most about the first catagory followed by the third. The third catagory guys are bound to crash sometimes, because they don't care if they crash. Its all about how far they can push it to get faster drifts.

Now the other thing is even professional race cars drivers crash in regular racing. It happens. You do not hear about it because most guys doing serious SCCA and whatever even if they are on the forums do not post . I crashed at Road Atlanta or Laguna Seca last weekend. Why? because shit happens and they know that. Its not a big deal.
Here though you have two factors making the drift crashes more public. One is the I don't have experience first catagory looking for help. The other is the ooooooh awwww factor people posting about some big name crashing at Irwindale.
On top of all that a lot of the current tracks selected for drift in the U.S. by Formula Drift and D1 are fucking terrible tracks for drifting right and left handed( Irwindale stands out here and a lot of people hate it for that very fact). I.E. they are oval tracks setup to hang the car out in one direction. When they setup the tracks for drift, you have people going opposite lock to the walls setup the other way. It breeds wrecks even with experienced drivers.

Go to Japan and you will see all the major drift tracks are like our road racing courses and not high banked ovals for Super Modifieds.
Are there crashes in Japan? yes but that is again the third catagory situation. Experts pushing it hard as hell who figure if they crash they have another chassis back at the shop.

wooops. My bad, kinda new to the boards.

but yea....if your friends were riding with you, I have no sympathy because your car must have felt heavy and sloppy and you should have known better. If they were outside watching like they should have been or following in a car behind you, then more power to ya!

Do you have basic mods like welded differential and maybe some coilovers? If not, a welded diff and chopped springs atleast is a must!

none of these are cool responses. "cool" is this guy getting what he deserves for driving on the street. no fucking sympathy, none what-so-ever. TONS of people make far drives to make events on this board so alabama is a lame-ass losescuse. but hey keep it up man, the more shit you wreck the more part cars there are to choose from here in our wonderful world of zilvia.

I know, it was more of a jab at this kid's sorry driving skills than anything, plus any chance I get to downplay drifting I take advantage of because drifters take criticism more personally than anyone else in the world. It's like jabbing a tiger in the leg, you know he's going to pounce at any moment. Funny thing is my opinion doesn't mean shit, yet someone always has to write an essay about how I'm wrong. We've all had our share of wrecks, but most of us are intelligent enough to learn from them. Some apparently aren't.

I think you'll find that zilvia doesnt care so much about "oh i messed my car up" threads.

I guess the moral of the story is to know for sure where the "slick as ice" patches of road are at and try to go around them.

I think the moral of the story is to not post about ur wrecks because you will get flamed for it. Whine about it to your GF or something who will actually care. Zilvians are unsensitive mofos and we know it.

The only thing that i ment by saying you have to pay to play is if your gonna do something retarted like drifting on the street around curbs or whatever.Eventually your gonna hit something and its gonna be expensive. Keep it the track or around non populated areas where you dont have to worry about hitting things.

you don't HAVE to do it at all. but if you're going to do it, can't you at least do it on a rural road with less traffic/no curbs/more animals?

projectRDM
02-07-2006, 08:47 PM
Agreed. Just because you're a fucking moron that doesn't mean you have to drive like one. You could actually obey the law, act responsible, and be civil to other drivers on the road. Wouldn't that be a cool idea?

I do keep it away from curbs and cliffs though...it's just a thing I do >_<

QFT. Look who our drifting role models are: Tsuchiya, Tarzan, Kumatsu, Ueo, Imamura, etc. They all started out as street racers and touge drifters. If you wanna step it up to the level of a professional you have to practice ALL the time. A lot of the up and coming U.S. drifter started on the streets, too. It is reality. You just have to be smart about doing it. Being smart includes going with more experienced people, gripping a course before drifting it, checking for hazards and obstacles before the attack, scouting and keeping watch for police, going very late at night, starting slow, etc.

Drifting was born on the streets so it only makes sense that it continues to do so. If there was a drift event every weekend I would be there and say fuck street drifting. Unfortunately that isn't the case so we are left to our own devices to achieve levels of greatness and to hone our skills. As street drifters we also have to accept the consequences which include getting busted and damaging the vehicle. By being smart about our approach to street drifting we can minimize the consequences and get better at the sport. I learned the basics on the street and I continue to learn at my favorite spots when I know the timing is right. Crashing is just part of the drift game and is the reason I am building a drift only car. Most people don't achieve a higher level of drifting unless they crash and learn from the experience.

Although most of us that are serious about the sport do drift on the street we shouldn't post that we do so as not to draw attention to this necessary evil inherent to drifting. Regardless, it isn't smart to post about these exploits for the danger of identification and needless flame war posts.
